Never feel embarrassed about needing help. The first step in improvement is knowing and accepting something is wrong. I'm happy for you, wishing the best.

As someone who has suffered from depression/anxiety, I can't speak highly enough about counselling & therapy. Speaking to a 'stranger' is so much easier and they're not afraid to tell you what you need to hear. I spent 12yrs in a career where admitting your weaknesses wasn't the done thing, so can complete relate. Great video Maff, nice to see a bloke speaking about these issues

Im a guy, i have been to counselling back in year 10 at school with a school counselor, i spoke to my school nurse about anxiety, when i had mock exams i had panic attacks for every mock exam and i would have to leave and go to the school nurse, she was really helpful, she contacted the school counselor for me and i talk to her about my depression, suicide, anxiety everything really. Then when I finished school i moved onto CAMHS, i had 3 different counsellors at different times, all of them were called dave😂 I stopped having counselling in September last year, im now 16 almost 17 and everything is literally 95% perfect, i just need a job😂 I volunteer at rspca as an animal care assistant, hopefully that will be my job, and in regards to mental health im all good.

i definitely went through the whole " i've got this under control" thing before seeking help. i think it's a common thing- not being able, for a while, to really gauge if you need or want therapy. therapy is such a strong, adult thing to do in my opinion. adulthood isn't about being able to figure out everything/do everything by yourself- it's about knowing how and when to get help, and how to utilize resources. it's about getting to know yourself and embracing support. i like how you mentioned it feel like steps up a ladder. i really appreciate this video and your honesty, it was encouraging.

I've been going to therapy on and off since I was 14 and I am now 20. I've had to start going once a week because of recent events. Its not something to be ashamed of because sometimes we just need someone's advice or a 3rd party who doesn't know you to help you with issues! I'm very proud of you for taking that step :) Good job Matthew!!!

    Hi Matthew,
I can't even tell you how incredible it is to watch and listen to this video about your experiences with therapy. I feel like there's this huge stigma surrounding guys talking about how they're feeling which clearly leads to a lot of issues with mental health. I'm really sad to say that my brother committed suicide last week (just writing that feels really odd), and I just feel like if he'd talked to somebody about how he was feeling this wouldn't have happened. Thank you so much for expressing the importance of talking to people, and releasing the stigma surrounding mental health. It's so important and hopefully your contribution will help a lot of people.
    Love you and Helen loads,
    Katie

Pixie Eames I actually really liked therapy growing up. I wasn't troubled but I did have my occasional troubles and problems (just like everyone) but sometimes it's good just to chat to someone about yourself and honestly listen, what you like what your goals are even if it's all a bunch of positive stuff. You come out with a clearer mind every time.

The first step is realising and admitting you're not happy or not in a good place. People can tell you to do things but it's all up to you, yourself. Quite admirable that you can talk about it, especially to a bigger audience.
Social media gives this false representation that peoples lives are perfect and fun. That's why when I get anxiety I don't use my phone. I don't open FB or IG because it just makes it worse. Movies, tv shows and/or books help me. Being alone and just not thinking about other people also makes it better for me. Everyone definitely has different coping mechanisms, just best to find out what fits you.

So glad you shared about part of your journey Matt. It's something (I personally believe) males (& females) need to share about, because it helps others to see that it's not "weakness" getting help. It's "bettering" yourself....and helping you (& others) on your journey. Good on ya mate ☺️

Talking about it is great. I think a lot of guys, myself included, hold back and dont speak the truth and then you get angry and feel tense, but its more frustration from bottling it up constantly. I've done that for most of my life and its not good, and now the last year or so i try talking about my feelings more and it has helped massively. Good on ya Matty!

Agree with Helen that this was a GREAT video to make. Matthew, so many men feel stigma about seeing a therapist and it's really re-enforced in our society. Every story matters and I'm sure this video will help people. Your anxiety story is so much more like mine than most anxiety stories. Ever since I've talked to someone I've really found more happiness in my life. Happy you're getting there, too.

Good lad! I've been through the same thing mate due to my set backs with my head and it really effected my work in a big way and enough for me to lose sight of a few important things and people aswell, the first step is knowing yourself and like you said it almost brings comfort to know it can be worked on and its not alone, and with what you said about site work i totally agree like it was always quite an angry place for me aswel mate and not much respect thrown around and alot of stress for other kinds of workers trying to work, but yeah stay well mate and keep up the good work.

thank you for this video! i've been in and out of therapy for years and it's never something i really wanted to be open about but over the past few months i've come to the realisation that there's no shame in doing what you can to help yourself. i think it's especially hard for men because there's such a stigma around mental illness in men, to the point where men are afraid of going to therapy because of people viewing them as fragile less masculine. really really great that you've decided to put this out into the world, thanks for fighting the stigma ❤

Matthew this took a lot of courage. Thank you for raising awareness by not only focusing on mental health, but anxiety. I have been dealing with anxiety since I was twelve. Everyone always said it was "in my head". Truth is it is in your head and therapy can help you find better ways of dealing with it. Getting help is not a sign of weakness as some are led to believe its a sign of strength. Knowing somethings got to change and doing something about it! Great Job!

My boyfriend has suffered with anxiety and depression for years and has recently started going to counselling sessions, it isn't an overnight fix but it is helping. Good on ya both for supporting each other x

I totally understand the suffer, this is so brave.
Men are also affected by this shit patriarchal society that we live on "don't show your feelings" you know.
Nothing more than positive vibes to you! 🎈

really appreciate your honesty here! and glad to hear you're feeling positive about the therapy! I attended a short cognitive behavioural therapy course for anxiety last year through the wellbeing service in norwich and it was the best decision I made all year! helped me so much. and the therapist inspired me to look into becoming one myself, so now i'm hoping to do my masters degree in art therapy :) definitely believe that if anyone feels they could benefit from some form of therapy they should give it a go

I relate to this video SO MUCH on a personal level. I've suffered from symptoms of both anxiety and depression since the age of 14 (I say symptoms because I haven't been diagnosed with depression). I'm now 19- and I only started going to counselling and seeing a mental health about these issues a month ago. Like you, I'm extremely stubborn and find it difficult to reach out and talk to people about my issues, as well as recognising their is a problem. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't, but it's better than nothing. Thank you for making this video, makes me feel like I'm not the only stubborn git who just wants to troop along until things do get really bad x

So much respect 💖 Mental illnesses are the pits but recognising you have a problem and making the steps to help yourself is so fucking hard! So well done for addressing it ☺ Here's to a happier and healthier future for you x

I totally get what you mean about anxiety, before I went to my counsellor I didn't realise I'd had it since I was about 5/6 years old! It's crazy but makes you feel so much better once you can explain what's been going on. Wishing you the best

Well done maff, very good video to do. So difficult to talk about but so vital to share. This will make a huge difference to someone, that you just don't understand. If only more people told their stories and open up. Best of luck man!

Sometimes anger and sadness get the best of me. Thank you so much for sharing this video. it certainly helps me realize that there's other people out there that are sympatico with my feels on talking about my problems. I feel more likely to go talk to someone instead of iternalizing my feelings now. Thank you.

Thank you for doing this video Matthew. It takes quite a few sessions to find out the truth. So please everybody, don't give up if you've just started therapy. As Matthew says, there is plenty of time.
