Apple Jack is what is known as a static character. The point of a static character is not to change their character, but instead, they help outside development with their character traits. If they're not contributing to the plot in interesting ways, then yes, they're boring. Also, satic characters are predictable, but their predictability can still be played with by either impressing the audience or breaking expectations. Rarely do I see static characters be written well, and Apple Jack is sadly one of those cases. Too much was stacked against her and no one seemed to really understand how to write her.

Really? I found Applejack to be an excellent static character. She really shined when comparing other characters to her because as you said, her role as a static character was in assisting in the development of other characters.
Granted some writer didn't understand how to use her and she ended up having weird character flaws in this isolated episodes but for the most part, especially in those earlier seasons, I think she was handled fabulously. She was often used to guide Applebloom and the CMC, be emotional (and physical) support for the Mane 6, and to simply teach the audiences about lessons aplenty. One of the best examples of her being excellent static character has to be in season 2's Super Cider Squeezey 6000 when she didn't learn anything but rather had her viewpoint 100% validated by the episode even when the episode challenged her. There is no other episode that so perfectly captured Applejack than that on.
And lest we only see her as a static character, Applejack still had her fair share of dynamic moments, mostly when she stubbornness or independence let her to make bad choices. These episodes still felt very natural and they were especially prominent in the early MLP seasons.

I personally like the fact they work on the same character flaw multiple times. That's far more accurate to actual change and since this show is here to teach people good habits and the importance of friendship and love, it helps show that it's ok if you don't "get it" the first time. Character flaws can't be solved in a day. I miss this show so much.

  • @SaraBanartist

The Cutie Mark lore got weird after a while.
Season 1 seemed pretty clear that the mark appeared after a pony discovered their talent, meaning it was just a symbol of what that talent was and that said talent was inside the pony all along and just needed to come out when they realized what they're passionate about.
Then some seasons later it's like "they're LITERALLY the talent itself and if they're taken away then the pony can't do the thing anymore."
So when Starlight showed up in Season 5 and stole their marks for a minute it was like "oh no...Applejack can't...FARM anymore."

I watched this show as a kid. Now as a young adult I think it’s so weird that this world normalized finding your career at grade school age. I know I would hate my career plan of teaching despite wanting to be a teacher when I was little.
I wish there was an episode where some pony realized they didn’t actually want the career they thought they wanted and found a new career and then their cutie mark changed. That would be a great lesson for kids watching that it’s okay to find new interests and careers and make this world less frightening as an adult viewer.

    • @kevinbell5674
      @kevinbell5674 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Except that would make cutie marks completely useless. Cutie marks don't show what you think you want to be, but who you truly are.

@@kevinbell5674 If cutie marks show who you truly are, then having a signifier of that coming from the age of a toddler it still incredibly frightening. Even many college students still don't know what they truly are, but this world normalizes choosing your entire life path as a child, which never made sense to me even when I was little. I still think, regardless of the canon of MLP, that showing that you can change over time is normal and healthy and a great lesson for kids

@@theshire9173 It's something that appears when they actively discover a unique trait, a talent, or a place to belong. It doesn't just appear out of the blue. Also, getting a cutie mark doesn't mean a pony stops changing or growing. I feel like you're fundamentally not understanding what a cutie mark is.

    • @AdventureHusky
      @AdventureHusky ปีที่แล้ว +21

@@theshire9173 There are two, maybe 3, episodes that expand on that concept actually in the later seasons. How your cutie mark doesn't correlate to your path in life. Sure, it's you special talent, true calling or aspiration or whatever, but there's been examples in the show of ponies choosing to do other things or not following their cutie marks. There are some ponies who don't even know what their cutie mark means or have misconceptions of their talents. It isn't necessarily tied to what you do for the rest of your life, more as like a moniker for what you're talented at. If you wanna expand upon your talent and make it your career goal, that's on you, but its in no way a death sentence to your character.

Ironically, Applejack is my favorite, and has been my favorite since I started this show. I was actually a little too old for the show when I started out - I was 11 or so, and I hadn't really heard of the show before, but a family friend who was like three or four years younger than me liked watching it a lot whenever her family came over. But I was like. Just barely out of the range of kids the first season or so was targeted at, and I think that was why I was more interested in Applejack than I was in a lot of the other characters. When I first started, Applejack always kind of struck me as the oldest/most mature of the Mane 6, and she kind of became something that I really wanted to emulate. She had a lot of responsibilities, and she seemed more connected to Ponyville and its community than most of the others. And I was kind of a shy kid with somewhat overbearing parents, and I desperately *wanted* responsibility and to be connected to my community so I really wanted to be like her. (She's still the reason my favorite backgrounds in DnD are folk hero-esque backgrounds, fun fact).
And as I got older, I kept watching the show, and I just... really liked what they did with her? Like, don't get me wrong: you're absolutely right that she's got more than her fair share of episodes that were just... Bad - but the episodes that were good for her? They were some of my *absolute* favorites. Applebuck Season was a big one, but I was also a big fan of Last Roundup, and many of the other Apple family-centric episodes incl. Pinkie Apple Pie and Perfect Pear. And in a way, she feels like one of the most rounded characters, even though she doesn't tend to go through many changes. She feels like she exists as a part of Ponyville and its community in a way that the other main characters often don't - to the point that when she isn't playing a major role/not appearing in an episode, I wouldn't be surprised if she came back towards the end of the episode and mentioned that she actually had something going on the whole time, just because she feels like she's the only one with a life outside of the scope of the show. I guess that's where a lot of the AJ is a background pony bs kind of comes from, but I think Applejack was the series' door to a whole bunch of potential storylines that none of the other characters could really do. You can't have Rarity, or Fluttershy, or Twilight lead a story about Ponyville's existing community dynamics, because none of them have really been shown to have a connection to minor Ponyville characters - unlike AJ, who's shown to have relationships with the mayor, and Filthy RIch, and the Cakes, and many other minor characters. You can't have Rainbow, or Pinkie, or Fluttershy, or even Twilight lead a story about Ponyville's somewhat recent history, because none of them have been here long enough (or, with the exception of Pinkie, engage enough with the community) to know it themselves or be close to people who did know. Other than Rarity, since she was the only other Ponyville native, you can't have multi-generational community dynamics come into play. And unlike all the other Mane 6, you can't really have more focused explorations of complex family dynamics without Applejack because unlike all the others, Applejack is the only character early on who has more than just a single family member introduced. Where focusing on any other main character's family would require you to introduce them, their dynamics, and their history within the very episode to try and get to that point, Applejack's family has the early introduction and the spaced out tidbits of information that helped build a picture of the Apples early enough that in an Apple-centric episode, you can get right to the point of Applejack's relationship with her brother, or her sister, or whoever.
While I completely agree that a lot of Applejack's episodes fall flat, I'd make the argument that it isn't necessarily because she herself is a bad character - I'd argue its far more so that the scope of the episode was always too broad or too narrow for her. Episodes that focus strictly on her relationship with the other main cast (whether it's one/two specific characters or the mane 6 as a whole) make her feel flat because it ignores the community she is inextricably tied to since none of the others are nearly as connected to Ponyville as a community. And on the other hand, episodes that take her out of/away from the context of Ponyville, or that have a much larger scope often reduce her to a handful of quips or the like. I would honestly watch a whole show just about the lives of the Apples and Ponyville, with Applejack as the main character, because of how interesting community dynamics are to me, and because of how much connection Applejack has to the rest of her own community. Like just a whole show's worth of Applebuck Seasons and Last Roundups and Perfect Pears and Pinkie Apple Pies. Even episodes where Applejack isn't necessarily the focus, but plays a role of community representative, like with the first Nightmare Night episode. It's just a role that makes sense for her, and would be something absolutely fascinating to explore. It's just a shame that the writing team often tried to shoehorn in Applejack into the same types of storylines that all the other characters had, even when she was better suited for a lot of other types of episodes.
I do also want to point out - there is one particular relationship Applejack had within the Mane Six that could have had additional focus, and would probably have a very hard time getting as ham-fisted and predictable as her relationships with Dash and Rarity: her relationship with Twilight. Especially early on in the series, Applejack often acted as Twilight's right hand, and often had her taking Twilight's place as the group's de facto leader. I think that while Applejack's Rarity or Rainbow Dash episodes were often extremely predictable because of how universal their clashes were (Rarity and AJ will always have conflict because they're different, because their differences are the core of their relationship, and the same applies for AJ and Rainbow's similarities), Twilight and Applejack's conflicts will inherently differ by context. Applejack and Twilight's conflict in Applebuck Season behaves extremely differently than their conflict in the season 4 premier two-parter, because their differences aren't nearly as all-encompassing. The former is a conflict between Applejack's stubbornness and Twilight's concern for her friend, while the s4 premier is about /Applejack's/ concern for both her friend and her country, against Twilight's unwillingness to let her friends put themselves in more danger purely to keep herself safe. The situation changes their conflict, and I think that makes it a little more interesting than the twentieth "Applejack and Rainbow Dash are so similar that they argue and neither of them is really better, they're both equals actually" episode.
I'm so so sorry about the length of this comment though - you raise a lot of really really good points, and by and large I agree with you, but Applejack is just one of those characters I have extremely strong opinions surrounding.

Apple JAck always felt like she could've been more, but unfortunately she wasn't as put forward as the others and sometimes I think the writing team kinda forgot she existed as she most of the time got put off to the side or coupled with other characters in more focused episodes. Heck, Applejack seemed the most adult of the cast and they could have made her deal with more adult issues than the typical friendship stuff. It would have been nice to see Applejack expand the apple farming industry, or deal with the possible loss of her farm due to financial issues, maybe have some more of her family make an appearance. Apple Jack feels so underrated.

In real life scenarios people who dont have big aspirations or have goals/dream or it seemed like they have everything theres nothing wrong with it at all but ig if we put them in a show they do seemed like boring to watch.
But i would like to point out too that applejack's character also shows the audience you dont need fancy stuff or be highly successful to be happy. Applejack is content because she has her family and friends by her side and i think thats an admirable trait to have and i also think as to why she never had a big arc like fluttershy or twillight has.

To an 8 year old me this show was revolutionary. I was already in the My Little Pony Sphere thanks to having G1 on DVD and watching G3/G3.5 wherever it would come on TV or finding it all on On Demand. (I was not afraid to search up the reuploaded in parts versions of each show across the internet either) But I was slowly growing out of them because every time they introduced a cool concept or magic in general it was always really lame or they only used it ONCE to defeat the big bad. Or in G3's case there was literally no magic whatsoever and the unicorns were glorified earth ponies. (I think in the runaway rainbow movie the unicorns literally used magic wands instead of their horns. And Earth ponies cutie marks gave them supernatural powers like care bears) So you can imagine frustrated 8 year old me wanting some good horsey magic in my my little pony show and just never getting it. Then FIM was tossed my way and I was in absolute awe. (At the time) The unicorns actually used magic, the pegasi got 20% cooler with their weather abilities and well earth ponies are earth ponies. I remember screaming when they defeated nightmare moon or the first time I saw Twilight use her horn to levitate things or do big spells (Like in the First Trixie episode with the Ursa Minor) From then on I was absolutely hooked and FIM became my introduction to using photoshop to make all my pony OC's. Season 1 may have been campy, dated, and repetitive, but it was the best to my younger self and I'll always remember it fondly. I really hope you do the rest of the seasons because in some ways they get kinda better, especially when they introduce characters like Starlight, Sunburst and the friendship school kids. The CMC also really mature and become less annoying plus the morals become a little more nuanced and adult.

I kind of just remember seeing bits and pieces originally of the show on TV and just liked the nice designs and characters personalities and then got more into it following the seasons later. I was not deep in the Brony fandom but was aware of them and more exposure from their songs and fanart than the more horror stuff, so I have a more positive idea of them for the creativity side. As for the characters I enjoy Rarity the most and relate more with Fluttershy with her issues. I do still enjoy the show overall and had fun watching it.

Spike episodes for the most part are pretty bad yeah most would agree me there but I think Spike as a character works much better when hes with a different character to play off with like Twilight mainly. Spike as the protagonist of an episode vs Spike when hes not are practically two entirely different characters

I remember watching pretty much all the seasons several times up until season 8 when I stopped watching the show. The place I watched it on was Netflix, which carries all of the seasons (except maybe season 9? I haven’t checked.) Because of how much I binged this show, I could probably tell you the plot of every episode off the top of my head. Though admittedly, I forgot about the buffalo episode except for some gag at the beginning of episode about Fluttershy saying she would like to be a tree(?) Although, now that I’ve been reminded of that episode… yeah I think I forgot it for a good reason…

I stopped right around when the 3rd or 4th movie came out, and they practically became required viewing to understand what was going on. We went from "Twilight has a crystal palace now" to "the crystal palace is a school with other dragons and gryphons and all these other non-pony races showing up!" I should have probably stopped sooner, but I saw the show as a comfort viewing, where problems were solvable, and people were generally kind to one another. I'm still subbed to a few channels that started as MLP review channels, and I still have one or two traces of my brony phase in my life, but I never stopped actively seeking out and watching animation intended for younger audiences, which got sparked from MLP.

Ah yes, this show. Used to be a favourite but like you I started falling off post season 4... well post Rainbow Rocks (Second movie in the humanoid spin off 'Equestria Girls' franchise, the dolls suck but the figures are cute) Mostly becuase that's the point the show started messing up and going directions I didn't like (Starlight Glimmer, School of Friendship, Pony of Shadows, Student Six, Twilight taking over the kingdom, ect) And yeah, basically getting less fun to watch over time. Still nice to look back on the early stuff again with a new perspective.

okay but fr it's adorable when pinkie sings x3 Both her voice, fluttershys and applejacks voice is my favourite. All the vas and singers are really good Pinkies singer (Shannon Chan Kent) does a great job with high vocals because Andrea the va of pinkie finds singing that high strains their throat so Shannon does the singing, amazing singing that high doesn't strain her throat. What really sold me on pinkies singing though is the song performed in season 6 as "Pinkies Present." They were flexing and it was amazing!🔥Cool fact: scootaloos va Madeleine Peters actually sings really well so it was hard trying to sing bad on purpose. I really gotta thank the show for being part of my childhood, as well I actually got my art style from the show. I'm really not a fan how a lot a cartoons these days oversaturated things, sometimes feeling like the art was put in a deep fryer. The early season might have been trying to find its place but they did have a nice art style that was easy on the eyes. It was cute unique and it told a great story🦄✨

I wonder if season 1 of the show was instead 13 episodes of a semi-serialized arc where Twilight Sparkle and the rest of the mane 6 Exploring all of Equestria to get the missing Elements of Harmony gem shards they have been scattered and find and put the pieces back together before Nightmare Moon finds them and uses them to destroy the world so it's similar to a collectathon like the Power Stars from Super Mario 64 or the Jiggies from Banjo-Kazooie.

Concerning the fandom itself, my experiences are actually overall positive. I've only met a select few not-so-kindly souls, and most of the bronies I know I talk to regularly in a dedicated Discord server-- there's plenty of differing opinions, but no true bad blood or even bad apples. We've only had one major incident and the person responsible got their well-earned boot in no time flat.
Though in fairness, I don't tend to look too far beyond my own preferred circles. Every fandom seems to drown itself in negativity these days, and I'm just plain tired of screaming matches.

The reason why the animation for the entire series was, the backgrounds looks like something coming out of the Dr. Seuss TV specials from the 1960’s and 1970’s that looks it was done by DFE.
And not only that, the background and layouts were influenced by the UPA cartoons of the 1950’s.

That "Over a Barrel" episode basically said, "Well, if the Native Americans shared their land in the first place, the settlers wouldn't have k*lled them."
Also, I'm sometimes wary when it comes to learning about sharing. A lot of us have been taught that it's good to always share and that it's bad not to, which is complete bull. Sometimes people don't want to share at that moment. You're not a bad person for setting boundaries or saying "no" (that's one of the reasons I had trouble saying the word growing up). It'd be better to teach children that it's good to share, but you don't always have to. If someone doesn't want to share with you, then respect that.

A reminder that Twilight Sparkle is Celestia's faithful student, thus explaining why she is uncomfortable with the attention she is getting. Despise that, she is humble and polite, turn down the offer without frustration.
7:57 Finally, someone get it about the "Dusty old books" part!
8:40 Actually, it's Twilight who doesn't want to go back, after realizing how wonder it is to have friends. Friends are not tool, they are people. Celestia see that Twilight is destined to be a good friend.
I love how the Gala sub-plot is the driving force of the Mane 6 personality.
    9:35-9:50 Thumb up!
15:05 Pinkie Pie didn't say anything on how to solve the Parasprite issue, which is why nobody listen.
16:35 "Just because I am a lady doesn't mean I can't stand up for myself" 22:36 Criticize to be a show-off. The Mane 5 has no intent to challenge Trixie. It's Trixie who ask them to challenge her.
26:14 Pinkie's talent is to bring joy to any pony around and when they don't come, she become sad.
29:01-29:20 It's sad how the Show started from "It's the virtue that make you a good friend" than "Being friends with any body regardless of their attitude or behavior".
I prefer Season 1 and 2(first half) because Lauren Faust worked on it. She has her own vision and a deep theme which explain the show success but because of Hasbro's business model and Lauren Faust wanting to tell story, she left.
If Hasbro did respect Lauren Faust vision, we wouldn't have Them's Fightin' Herds.

  • @realjoemavro

I suspect the issue with Trixie could be chalked up to the Ponyville citizens not being accustomed to someone so prideful being in their quaint, humble little community. Even when Celestia herself pays them a visit, we see her mingle with the townsfolk like anyone else. And didn't several of the Mane Six expressed disapproval over Rarity showing off her wings, mostly because she was supposed to be helping them support Rainbow Dash?

It's kinda funny that you did this review, since I remember some people joking about how RWBY is basically MLP with colors and magic of friendship.
I'd say during the time of S1 and S2 releases all that MLP thing was just wonderful overall (not saying 100%, but still). It inspired so much people. Different people.
I don't think I would dive as much in that now, but at that specific time it was just right. I wouldn't call myself brony though, because I don't dedicate myself to a fandom to such an.. unhealthy degree. Show enjoyer? Sure.
I think you should review S2, it's still fun.
I've noticed how you used Two Best Sisters Play as one of the examples of the fanwork. Yeah, I love it.
Do you remember Princess Molestia tumblr? It was taken down later, and it's a shame honestly, because it featured humor much more than just obscene stuff. Gamer Luna also originated there. ..This was so long ago, I myself barely remember this..

Im not sure if this is a hot take but season 1 is not one of my favorites in fact I think its one of the lesser seasons. The show hasn't found its footing yet and you can tell by the janky animation that they didnt have the most faith in it, normally I hate saying stuff like this but I firmly believe most people who hype it up as one of the best season do so cause they associate it with a better time in their lives or cause they are bias towards Lauren Faust. Season 8 was by far the worst season and Yakity Sax is easily the worst episode of the series and its not even close like yeah Princess Spike and Spike at your service are BAD but they arent Yakity Sax bad
