    The EMD MP15 series are work horses. I grew up on Long Island and we had MP15 ACs pulling commuter and freight trains. Some are still being used today (since 1984). The Union RR uses MP15 DCs. The DCs have the radiator in the front and the ACs have them on the sides.

    An old end-of-life tank car filled with concrete is another common way to have a scale car. Sometimes painted blue and decaled as “SCALE CAR” in giant white letters.

It is a club in Mechanicsburg Pa called the Keystone Model Railroad Historical Society, they have a website that you can check out but they have open houses for the public on the weekend of September 17th and 18th. Just a bit of history for those who don't know. When DJ showed the footage of the class yard with the highway bridge over it, there's a huge vacant field in the background. That's the former site of the huge USS Duquesne Works.

    I love the curved layout yard! I'm modelling a local yard section similar to that in my home town... and fitting it on a 2' by 8' 'shelf'/table layout. A sea barge facility at one end and a 'tribute to coal and forest industry' at the opposite corner. Facilities around here are mostly in the running-down phase so those gondolas with shrubbery! growing gives me more ideas. Love it. Thanks, DJs Trains!

      Yeah, I know things are different in the real world as opposed to a layout, but I never understood all the curved yards either. There were dozens of other yards that are long gone that were straight, but not near this prime location for the different branch lines.

    Great video and tutorial abt part 3 of the Union Railroad. Quite a nice railyard from up above thanks to the drone footage. I too got a kick out of the vegetation growing in the Gondolas which isn't surprising either. Bcuz it'll certainly grow if its moving as well but those noticeably haven't moved lately! Those MP15's sounded so good pulling those open hoppers. Had a BIG surprise today, 2 NS AC4400CW's pulled a 128 car Grain Train near us heading to Perdue Farms in Salisbury, Md. Thanks again Dj for all you do to share your videos with us along with your time and effort my friend!

  • @katherinemorey6517
    @katherinemorey6517 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Dj, I love the footage of the rail yard and the gondolas full of trees and bushes. I have been putting some graffiti on my HO scale houses and businesses on my layout. I even put a lot of weathering on a shop. I have been thinking about recommending gorilla super glue to you because it is so strong. It is able to dry in 10 seconds and I love it when it does that because I hate to wait for 30 minutes to an hour to use my trains and my buildings. I am not a patient person because I like to put a piece on and hold it on for only 10 seconds and then use the trains. I think that it is easier to have the piece accidentally slip when the glue is slow drying. Oh by the way, I have just gotten a new train engine and some figures and even female train crews that are all young and healthy. They even look great. Thank you, Cory Mears

      wow ...what goes around, comes around. It's like in the airline industry where 'point to point' routes become The Fashion - then they get replaced by the "hub and spoke' (bus connections) model until that just creates over-crowded connection airports and delays, then ... around we go again. Each new series of MBA grads always have a "new and improved" idea they need to try, I suspect.

    On the subject about things you don't see modeled on peoples layouts something I don't see much is piles of sand on yard tracks where locomotives have set and tested the sanders, maybe spilled from gondolas and hoppers, or for whatever reason it's there but there are many piles of sand in yards. In the overhead view of this yard you can piles of sand everywhere on almost every track and not just one pile on each track but many up and down them.

    I was wondering why flat switching has been replacing hump yards recently. One of the most compelling reasons I found was that "single car shippers" have migrated into containers shipped intermodally and sorted by the cranes that move them about initially at the docks. Thoughts Anyone?

    • @Stoker58
      @Stoker58 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The railroads have moved to a “Block Swapping” model with PSR which they find eliminates the need for so many hump yards as you keep cars going to the same or similar destinations together in blocks which is beneficial for flat switching. Hump yards are very expensive pieces of infrastructure to maintain and staff and flat switching is much cheaper.

      I was wondering too. I worked for CN Signals "back in the day" when the Edmonton hump yard was created at the main yards, which was pretty close to residential neighbourhoods. The braking mechanisms on the wheels made so much screeching noise that the residents were up in arms over it all - and rightly so. The quick and dirty solution (until new materials could be found for the braking pads etc.) was we-the-lowly signalmen had to man a 24-7 oil-pump spray device that lubricated/quieted the squeal... but if we added too much oil ... the 'BANG' from an un-decelerated car smashing into the other cars was pretty loud too!!! d'oh..

    • @Stoker58
      @Stoker58 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gcorriveau6864 I worked for NS at their Conway Hump yard I can still hear the retarders screeching away haha no noise control there. I’ve seen a few cars with slick wheels slide through the retarders and slam into cars in the bowl.

    • @cdavid8139
      @cdavid8139 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yessir. Railroads continue to quote rates to customers that highly encourage multi-car shipments. More and more single car moves have been driven to the highway. This reduces the need for some of the classification which in turn means the expense associated with 'some' hump yards are no longer needed.

    The vegetation & trees have won and beat us all up and down Union RR, NS, & CSX. 1989 I went to preschool at IC in Irwin NS MP 332 there was no trees and you could see Conrail Trains unobstructed from every road from Altoona to Pittsburgh. I've said this before PA is a tinder box with the amount of dead brush out here and if combined with a bad drought, high winds, and a Forrest fire. My past fire training & seeing the issues out on the West Coast - says that WV, OH, PA, & NY would get completely consumed by a Forrest fire in 24hours - as I hope this scenario & situation NEVER occurs in our or any PA citizens lifetime. There really really needs to be not a state but a major Northeast regional clean up and controlled removal of all dead brush & undergrowth vegetation and it's not the dead brush I fear the most it's the abandoned exposed coal seams that litter every squarer mile of this landscape. I've been watching the Centrila, PA Mine Fire stories closely and it's got smoke coming out of the ground in places they never imagined it would - I'm not saying it's threat to us out here but I won't let it cross my mind that one day in the distant future it might be. I started documenting the dead brush, the litter, the graffiti, bad drivers, and the crap in general I see around this state because i know people like you and me will be the generations to inherit PA and the next ones leading the much need fixes our PA leaders are currently ignoring.

      I went to Mt. Washington for July4th and you can no longer see the csx tracks and half of the river, because the trees are too tall. I think by next year you won't see much of the city.

    Can you explain the move away from hump yards?

    • @djstrains
      @djstrains  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I assume its cost savings on the maintaining the complexity of the retarders. Also, The hump was better for when there were way more industries for them to sort cars for. Now, its just a few industries and interchanges.

      @@djstrains You pretty much nailed it in this answer. Railroads more and more quote favorable rates based on multi car moves. That in turn reduces the need to classify.

    • @Stoker58
      @Stoker58 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They’re usually M&W cars, wrecked cars, or storage cars that sit for long periods of time generally not in “active” service. Although scrap gondolas tend to fill up with dirt after awhile and after heavy rains even those in service can sprout some leaves.

    • @cdavid8139
      @cdavid8139 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this day and age there are very very few "lost" cars in the USA and Canada. (Not saying there are none). Gondola cars tend to go through cyclical demands based on the need for moving scrap and aggregate. Sometimes older cars are shoved off to the side and stored in the event they might be used later. Others are pushed on siding for possible MOW use. Eventually they'll be scrapped or brought back to service when management "gets around to it"
