    Also, thanks for this. Born and raised in Bmore, gone for 30 years now. This was grand. Except for more broken windows and dollar stores, and bigger trees, looks pretty much the same.

    As you may not know the divided highway portion of RT 40 was originally supposed to be I-170. 170 would have connected to I-70 as a spur to bring traffic from I-70 into downtown if that interstate hadn't been stopped at Security Blvd, as you showed in an earlier video. The wide median strip in that section was intended for a future line of the metro that was also never built.

    • @tqnohe
      @tqnohe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, it was originally intended to be I-70 from the current terminus in Woodlawn to I-95 near Caton avenue. When the project was killed in the early 1970s it was designated as I-170 then lost that designation entirely. The ramps and bridges for I-70 can still be found where it was planned to join I-95.
      I-83 was also originally planned to connect to I-70.

    • @tqnohe
      @tqnohe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      From Wikipedia on I-70 in Maryland:
      I-70 was intended to enter Baltimore as an east-west freeway that had been proposed since the 1940s. Around 1960, I-70 was planned passing through a pair of parks and several neighborhoods in West Baltimore to end at an interchange with I-95 and I-83 at the Inner Harbor in Downtown Baltimore. A subsequent proposal based on a review of the 1960 plan moved I-70 to a new alignment that triggered community opposition, which resulted in a new design process in the late 1960s. A new plan was introduced around 1970 that would have moved I-70's eastern terminus to Southwest Baltimore (Sowebo). However, community opposition to the Interstate's planned route through the city parks resulted in I-70 being removed from city plans in the early 1980s.

    There used to be a ton of little hotels along 40 on the northern side (east) of Baltimore. Many are still in existence. Prior to I-95, this was the main route.

    Actually, I-70 was to continue east from 695 into downtown, connect with I-83 and both were to terminate at I-95. Politics got in the way, and now there's just that stub east of 695 and 83 turns into a city street. That obviously was not at rush hour, or it appears it would have taken twice as long.

    Fun fact: that MD 702 at the end was supposed to be I-695, but, as usual, people whined and moaned about it, so that's why I -695 from that point until the Key Bridge looks like it was thrown together because it pretty much was.

    RT40 was supposed to go through Leakin Park and connect to I-95 which would had a good short cut but this was in the 1960s and women were tossing themselves in front of bulldozers and protesting to stop the road is why you will see a bridge going nowhere.
