It would be fun to add few solar panels to it and bigger battery and make it run 24/7 with solar power. It would not be portable anymore but like the fun and joy of making it.

20:18 That's why I use AdBlock and NoScript. The internet is just infested with flash-based ads and stuff like that and it takes ages to load a page. Or some random stuff pops up in your face and you have to search the "x" to close it just to notice that the ad openes a new browser window with another ad.

it was distributed to school kids in my country a few years back. The idea was very noble but the thing is even thou it was 100$ laptop. When it came to our country, even though it was distributed freely, parents of kids who received it was told not to let their kid break this laptop otherwise they were liable to pay the amount trifold. Which made it just a show thing for most of the schools and kids. They couldn't utilize it to its fullest degree because if they broke it they would have to pay 300$ dollar which was back then quite a massive amount.

I had no idea that this existed. To me it seems like the forerunner to the way the computers are ultimately heading. Bright green is a popular colour now, even the OS looks a little bit like Windows 10.

The reason these PCs are so slow is because of the AMD Geode. The Geode is a rebranded National Semiconductor GX2, which is a Cyrix 5x86 SoC. The only thing AMD did to the thing was add some instruction sets and shrink the die so they could crank up the clock speed.
AMD also used the Geode and the 65535/6 companion chip in their 50x15 initiative brick computers, which were equally as slow and useless. I had one with a 400 MHz Geode and I upgraded it to 512 MB of RAM. It came with a locked BIOS and Windows CE, but after reading a couple of guides I was able to unlock the BIOS and install Linux on it which is far more useful. The machine was still dog slow doing anything but basic tasks though.

I want one of those for the heck of it, but the battery I have a suggestion a 6V NiMH RC Car battery. For example I have a portable DVD player and it took a odd AA NiMH battery back which I could not find but thing took a 7.2V NiMH 2100mAh battery. I got three RC car batterys that are 7.2V 2000mAh from the radioshack that was closing. I installed the battery but I had to mod the case alittle but nothing noticeable and it still looks stock. I got about 4 hours on a full charge. Sometime you can find another battery were you don't think of them to be.

Saw one a few months ago at a local Goodwill. Not sure how much they were charging, but less than 20 bucks. At first I thought it was just one of those fake kid toy laptops due to its atrocious neon green color, so I unfortunately passed it up. It was gone the very next day.

pretty simple to do, just pull the HDD, put it on a more modern device, (likely one that supports IDE drives as I'm guessing this is a pre-SATA era device), install OS of choice, then re-install the drive. Should be good to go from there.

I never understood the point of these things when they came out. They're completely unique which means learning how to use one will not help you when you encounter a PC or Mac. And dumb phones were already common (and cheaper) in developing nations when they were being shipped.

Heheh! I remember those! Very faintly. I remember seeing something about it on a cereal box some years ago. Thinking it was something for the impaired.
Still, it's a pretty interesting device minus it's performance.
I find it being a very limited machine due to it's simple, yet complicated layout.

It is possible on the original version like shown in this video, you need slipstreamed install disks though.
Some custom drivers are required, but you can run Windows on the X86 compatable ones.
The newer ones have a ARM v7 Marvel 1Ghz Dual Core CPU, which can only run ARM compatable Linux variants.
Low power embedded devices like routers, Raspberry Pi, Android phones, ETC, use that type of CPU.
Windows RT (stripped down mobile version of Windows) has support for running on ARM.
You'd need to go through the pain of setting up drivers or writing some, but Windows RT might run quite nicely.

the OS is definitely not optimized for the hardware, thats for sure. Even though its 433Mhz, I remember running XP SP1 on a P2 300 and it ran really well...
OLPC does, well did, sell an upgrade kit for that model which took it up to an ARM 1Ghz which powers most tablets these days. Should give it a good speed boost, and it opens it up for hacking android to run on it.

    • @xaer0knight
      @xaer0knight 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

well not all require 256MB RAM... there are a few that could work well on 64MB or less RAM (if you just use command line, 16MB for SliTaz). Some variants of Puppy Linux have run decently at 32MB, Damn Small Linux says MP3s playback with 16MB RAM, 128 MB for Bodhi Linux, VectorLinux Light with 64MB... Slitaz, Bodhi and Vector are both using a active repository.. Puppy doesnt use repositories but have an update every year or so. DSL is just DSL LOL

What a great little machine this could've been with slightly more modern hardware and OS.
Just a shame Apple never tried something like this, esp as one of the photographer guys actually went to Africa and showed the kids in a class his Powerbook G4 back in the day, the original iBook is what comes to mind looking at this LOL.
I see they were tryin to go for a kind of Playstation control layout for games oon the side of the screen there ,great idea if there were any of those games on it.
This was a great initiative I think, but it needed like I say a faster more modern implementation with something like I dunno OS-X with Spotlight for kids who didn't know how computers worked and needed to look for things by their words.
Of course none of the big Western world tech giants ever aimed at this market I don't think, no idea why I suppose that would've spoiled their image or not been cost effective making something as primitive as this but maybe it wouldn't if somebody had tried.
I suppose alot of folk in 3rd world countries might have iPads now with the amount thrown away to recycling so maybe this kinda thing isn't much cop nowadays who knows LOL.

I just bought two of these OLPCs off ebay for my collection. I found out that this computer's Suger OS is available for download from their site for free. Just burn the live iso onto a cd and you can run it live on a old pc to try it out without harming your PC. It works just like on this video here. I got it to work on an old IBM thinkpad laptop with 800Mhz 512MB ram! If your comp doesn't have a cd drive then you can install the os on a bootable usb and it also won't harm your computer at all when you use it. links below:
