    We were there in March 2022 there were a ton of people compared to your trip but we enjoyed it, but being 70 + we had to be careful where we walked....sucks getting old. Thanks for sharing all your videos.

      We got there early enough to beat the tour buses. As we left the Skywalk and headed to the shuttle there were a ton of people there.

    Thank you for your honest assessment of Grand Canyon West. I have been debating for some years to go there or not. It’s the Skywalk that would attract me to go. I’ve been to the National Park many times, south and north rim. After watching your travelogue, I think I owe it to myself to go at least once, just to say I did it.

    I loved seeing another part of the Grand Canyon! I've been to the South Rim in January (beautiful with snow, and the dry, icy wind), and also in October, driving up from Prescott, through Williams. I like the Native displays and history (Boo! to graffiti). The Eagle in the rock is amazing, and it was great you included the story behind it. The green Joshua Tree forest was fantastic! Thanks to you and your family for sharing it will everyone!

    Saw the Grand Canyon many years ago, late in the afternoon during the winter. It was near the Bright Angel Lodge. Looking over the side I could see huge pine trees that were far below and looked tiny from where I was. The late afternoon sun hitting the sides of the canyon really brought out the brilliant colors in the sandstone and cast their light on the snowy parts too. I thought it was like a huge outdoor stained glass window. If I live to be a hundred I'll never forget it.

    In the early 2,000’s I worked for a Grand Canyon tour company.
    I’ve been to Grand Canyon west over 270 times.
    It sure is a lot different now.
    The shuttle buses were beat up repurposed school buses.
    The airport was much more primitive and the skywalk was still a vision in someone’s mind.
    Guano point still looks much the same.
    Thank you for the tour.

      We probably knew each other...
      I worked for both Papillon and Heli USA Helicopter Comps.
      From 1998-2002. I would work 1 week on at GCW then off 1 week and back to Vegas where I lived.
      I stayed at the building next to Scenic Airways during my week on. sometimes early in the mornings, before the day started I would walk out the edge of the canyon to watch the sunrise which was always incredible. One early Sping Morning, I was On the way back to start the day I discovered Mountain Lion Foot Prints in the soft dirt. And, being that it was Spring I figured it was a Male Cat looking for a Female or Something to Eat, Since I don't look like a Girl Mountain Lion, I probably look more like a Las Vegas Buffet that's when I stopped spending my morning walks the the Edge of The Canyon! Lol... needless to say.

    We've still not visited the West Side as the experience feels so on the rails. That and the filming on the Skywalk policy... such a bummer (I do understand why though and appreciate it). That and yeah... I'm too much of a chicken walking on it. Glenn probably would with no problems. Love the structures on display there though! We're still partial to the North Rim and its views. I love the ravens out there though. They can be a bit of a pest (heard stories of them lifting keys from visitors) but we have them down here in the Phoenix area as well and I don't know why... I just love them. 😅

    • @SidetrackAdventures
      @SidetrackAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the North Rim has the best views too. We did see one person get to the door to the skywalk and decide they weren't doing it and turn around. I didn't see if there ever made it out.

    Another great video, Steve. Watch 'em over breakfast with large-scale maps. Guano Point Mine features big in Don Siegal's movie Edge of Eternity 1959 starring Cornel Wilde. Fully operational and terrific fight scene in the 'dancing bucket'. Based in Kingman, many other locations were used. Loved to have gone there in 1995 but unfortunately only time for North & South Rims. All the best.

My heart skipped each time I looked down on the Skywalk. We also had lunch at the restaurant the floor above the glass walkway, tremendous views and the food was surprisingly good! Thanks for all your adventures, I’m sure this won’t be the last time we follow in your footsteps.

    Grand Canyon West is definitely on my list since I've been to the south rim many times and the north rim a couple of times. I will say the restaurant at the North Rim in the main hotel has spectacular views! Anyhow, the "west" rim surely deserves a visit for a new perspective on the canyon in general.
    The Joshua Tree forest along the way is so neat! I drove through it a couple winters ago on my way to see the Pearce Ferry site. I feel like that corner of Arizona is quite overlooked for exploration.

    So glad to see a video on GC West. I just got back from GC East in the National Park where we had a full-day tour of the area. And even though the views were breathtaking and the scale of the canyon was incredible, the main take away when looking at a map is that even on our tour, we could only see a limited section of the canyon, and it's not even the largest section. Which ever side you visit, it's just amazing.

    • @SidetrackAdventures
      @SidetrackAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, there's so much to see. When looking across at Grand Canyon West, the other side is Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, where I've never been yet, but I hear there are some great views there too.

  • @brianmccarthy5557

    Steve;
    There was a film made in the late 1950's starring Cornell Wilde with Jack Elam as a villain. It was shot on location at Guano Point. Don Siegal directed (I think) and he was a big advocate of location shooting and stunts, many of which Wilde did himself. It's kind of a typical lost gold mine adventure with Wilde as a local sheriff and spectacular scenery. The climactic fight is shot on the cable car above the Canyon and it is terrifying. It's on You Tube, and I think the title is "Edge of Eternity". Now that you've been there watch it.
    Thanks for yet another great adventure. Kudos to your son for daring to go out with his crazy parents and get his picture taken. I hope he has an "I Did It!" tee shirt.

    Steve, those are Ravens not crows. First Western Crows have shorter beaks and Ravens have longer beaks often with a pronounced hook on the end. Crows do not soar, those ravens were soaring and notice ravens have a diamond pointed tail while flying, where crows are more squared off. Also crows wouldn't sit still like that, no fear of humans or not, they're nervous and tend to always look around. Ravens are naturally chill.
    Didn't you think they were kind of big for crows?🤔 Western crows only grow to about 1 1/2 lbs. where a Western Raven gets around 3 lbs. Ravens are wonderful birds and can talk if raised by humans. I made friends with a nesting pair when I was a kid by leaving them leftover anchovies bait.

    Thanks for your video. Tell you son he is not alone. I'm retired, and I have never felt safe on things like the sky walk - I don't go on them. Now that I've seen your video I don't have to wonder what it is like.
    As a side note, there was a Cornel Wilde movie shot in that area, called The Edge Of Eternity. Showing the tram and the view. There was a fight on the tram between Cornel Wilde playing a local Sheriff Deputy and a murderer. Liked your Video„

    Awesome Adventure Steve as always! I have been to "The Canyon" and also The National Park as well. Hard to appreciate the enormity of this area until you see it up close! And I remember as a kid seeing The Hoover Dam and thinking that was Huge😅 I very much appreciated you mentioning how the money spent there helps the tribes too in revenue! Much like you, I just shake my head at people putting graffiti on and around area's like this. The Canyon really is Breath Taking. Was very cool too of your Wife and Son to make room for us all to come along! Thanks as always Steve for the time and effort you put into your presentations and the comments from the Community attest to this! Cheers From COW-lumbus, Ohio MOO To All👋

    Steve, it's rather amazing that Joshua Tree N.P. isn't protecting the largest forest, but the most accessible--in CA.
    Just a personal view here: I've backpacked into Grand Canyon 3 times, and I agree with other hikers, and probably mule riders as well, that when you make the effort to do one of these things to, among other aims, experience complete silence, and then a helicopter flies overhead, it ruins it.

      @@bettym7346, maybe true. However, there's another method, aside from hiking/backpacking that's available--horseback, and would cost a mere fraction of the 'copter ride, wouldn't raise dust upon landing (since horses don't land), wouldn't disturb the quiet, etc., which is the same thought line that applies on the subject of flying into/out of/around Grand Canyon on an almost continuous basis. At times, it can be almost like hiking in a major city.🤨

    We were there in May of 2016 and enjoyed the Skywalk and pics (even though I'm somewhat scared of heights). We wanted to take a helicopter ride but it was windy enough and late in the day enough that they had stopped selling tickets (that would have been a spur of the moment purchase that we normally would not have done). Since we had seen the National Park the day before and spent the night there and are from Maine we tried to cram as much into our "little trip to Vegas" after going to Seattle. The sights were great and I like your narrations.

    @jimgreen5788 re: Helicopter noise: Pegasus the flying horse might take me for a close-up view of a granary hidden below the canyon rim, but I would've never known it was there to guide him. Our pilot, a veteran of helicopters in Vietnam, flew a Bell Ranger (formerly owned by John Wayne). I sat in front beside him, and the clear flooring below my feet gave an amazing view of the vegetation moving below us that in an eyeblink dropped off thousands of feet below the edge. Maybe the noise ruined other visitors' experience, but I never heard about it. The landing was a goodly distance from any South Rim attractions, and I do not recall dust.
    Being a polio survivor with assorted weaknesses preventing a trip to the bottom of the canyon by any other means, this was a miracle. And our pilot, with a definite talent for dramatic effect, played "The Flight of the Valkyries" in our headphones.
