The lower carbon grades are true steel with no eutectic carbides and higher carbon grades have some eutectic carbides. Hi Chromium steel rolls are used in roughing stands of HSMs, Steckle Mills and some early finishing stands of Hot Strip Mills.
Compared with Hi-Cr cast iron rolls, Hi-Cr cast steel rolls have the following performance characteristics:
(1)M7C3 carbide, with high microhardness and galloyood wear resistance;
(2)Martensite + carbide matrix, the carbide network is lighter than Hi-Cr cast iron, and the thermal cracking resistance is enhanced;
(3)Since heat diffusion mainly depends on the heat conduction of the matrix structure, the total amount of carbides is reduced, and the reduction of the network morphology enhances the thermal conductivity and reduces the requirements for roll cooling water;
(4)The amount of carbides and large carbides are reduced, and the bite performance is enhanced;
(5)The Cr/C ratio & the oxidation resistance are enhanced, the oxide film is dense and not easy to fall off, and it can be maintained at a higher temperature without growing thick.
