I asked the organist to play this at my Father's memorial service. The church organ developed a problem a few days before and she quickly relearned it for the piano. The church has a 6'10" Steinway and it was placed where the choir would normally sit. The sound did not fill the church the way the organ would have but rather it echoed throughout the chancel and gave the sound a quality of loneliness that was so befitting. I don't think I will ever hear a more perfect performance of this amazing piece.
I've hear this many times (in particular _Platoon:_ the death and betrayal of Sgt. Elias )and shocked to learn it was written by Samuel Barber. My first reaction was to see if it was transcribed for piano so I could play it. And I came here first. I'm 66 and yes, tears...
Whomever worked on this transcription clearly masters the essence of Minimalism. This is the very structural elements of the piece, thus its soul, distilled to the very defining fundamentals. No fluff. No fourths, no fifths, or octaves; no voicings, unnecessary inversions. Only the very core harmonic elements that transplant the message of the original piece. If one single of these notes were withdrawn then the piece wouldn't stand. That is why this is "so painfully beautiful" [this is a quote stolen from an observer of another great minimalistic rendition, perhaps not realising how the essence of-proper-minimalism was being captured].
Good transcription. The pianist shows deep understanding and respect for the music. The interpretation is understated compared to the dramatic expression of the string version. Apart from that the pianist captures the mood of the piece quite well.

This is lovely! I found sheets for it and I cannot stop playing it although I enjoy the strings version better. The strings version has more emotional and magic, I don't know, but still the piano version still makes me tear up! Love it! :)

Ah, exquisite performance in the original key (B-flat minor). I bought the Schirmer arrangement by Lawrence Rosen, and it's in A minor... I kept wondering what I was doing wrong! Thanks for this beautiful recording, which inspired me to start learning the piece.

Barber wrote the piano version first, then made a string arrangement when a befriended composer suggested this
