I’m a combat engineer, we don’t do much building besides wire obstacles. We mostly do movements, breaches, and assault missions. Every 12B is an engineer, but not every engineer is a 12B

@kloic 1 i beg to differ. Check out the battle of Alseia or more importantly the battle of Dyrrachium. Both caeser and pompey constructed more than trenches and pikes. The amount of walls, battlements, fortified camps would have been astounding to medieval Europeans. They did it with precision and efficiency that just didnt exists in medieval times in my opinion.

Combat engineers are essentially infantry with explosives training. Sappers become expects in field expedient explosives and advanced demolitions. I went to both Ranger and Sapper schools. I can tell you sapper school was harder. It requires more brain work and problem solving with small units tactics.
Most construction is taken care of by constitution engineers, we primarily only do basic fortifications and are all trained to support bridge operations.

In Denmark we're called pioneers, because we make it possible for the infantry to advance, which is often done by sneaking in on key locations and blowing up infrastructure, in advance of a major offensive.
When the infantry is advancing, we're up there ready with our explosives and rifles, when the infantry are sleeping... We are out deploying mines or obstacles in the cover of night ^^
We got a guy who used to be infantry, according to him we're getting a lot less sleep, but at the same time we do get "off" time.... In that there's not much for us to do, once the infantry decides to dig in - at that point we just occupy a flank and standby for new orders.

That’s because most of don’t really do our assigned duties. Doesn’t take a genius to fill hescos, and smack nails into wood, you can get pretty much anyone to do it. I’m a 12W and what we do when we deploy is basically get attached to a combat engineer unit, and do their dirty work. In theory we’re supposed to build these little mobile hand made bunkers, and big ass ditches for Brads and abrams to pop in and out of. We’ve got the carpenters and stuff in one platoon, the heavy equipment guys for the ditches, a third with a random mix of spare guys with the weird MOS to pull security then a headquarters section that’s supposed to have their own gear but doesn’t.

Actually I think the term sapper goes back way further than wwi as you mentioned. It actually has medieval origins. During a castle siege sappers would try to dig under a castle wall to weaken it until it collapsed. It's also where we get the terms undermine and underpin.

My favorite army engineering feat has to be back when Rome was at war with Carthage, who was the naval super power at the time.
Rome had a limited navy but because their engineering legions they were able to construct an entire fleet from scratch in a short amount of time to face the Carthaginian fleet, not only that but they ended up out numbering the Carthaginian fleet as well. Btw since fleets typically suffered high losses in battle they ended up pulling this off multiple times!

My son was part of a Sapper squad, did route clearance. Not a day went by that I didn't pray for his (his squad's and all our military's) safe return. I still wear a red shirt on Fridays.

  • @AzureViking
    @AzureViking 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Essayons! 12B from 2006-2014. I still miss it. Important distinction is that Combat Engineers basically specialize in mobility and counter-mobility. Mobility may include building bridges, clearing minefields and wire obstacles, breaching, route clearance, and route recon which includes verifying the capabilities or a road like grade of hills, sharpness of corners and weight capacity of bridges. Counter-mobility includes emplacing mine fields/wire obstacles, blowing up bridges, blowing up roads, etc. On top of that we are capable of everything infantry does. This is why engineers lead the way.

Former infantryman 0311 from Marine Corp. now a SSG in SFAB as a explosives hazard advisor(89D/12B slot). I was in a sapper company and 12B don’t build shit except wire obstacles which is also a basic infantry task. A sapper company embeds with infantry as enablers for breaching, and booby trap clearance. I’m a master breacher so as a squad leader I’d take my squad and become a 3rd or 4th squad in an infantry plt and we go fuck shit up and breach when needed. Until then while acting sqdldr I’d jsut be I the fight until we have an obstacle. They have 12C now that build bridges and 12N are the guys you are thinking about that builds fortifications and such things. YUT

    Here we are at misery,
    Ft Leonard Wood.
"File from the left, column left," said the Sergeant,
    We didn't know we could.
We're gonna to be Engineers, for our Uncle Sam.
So, we can fight those World War Twos, Koreas, Vietnams.
    [Chorus]
Cause we are, Mountain Movers - Mountain Movers, Castle on fire.
    Weapons and equipment and man-power.
    Yeeaah!
Nothing is too hard for us and nothing can't be done.
Just tell us where we have to go, we'll do it on the run.
    [Chorus ends]
Hey, Mr President, tell us that we can.
Fight for freedom and liberate oppressed lands.
Over hill, over dale, we hit the dusty trail.
Drive on Sergeant, you we'll never fail.
    [Chorus]
    [Cadence with marching background]
    Drill Instructor:
    Left, left, left right.
    Troops:
    Always first!
    Drill Instructor:
    Left, left, left, right.
    Troops:
    Bridge the gap!
    Drill Instructor:
    Left, left, left, right.
    Troops:
    Breech the wall!
    Drill Instructor:
    Left, left, left, right.
    Troops:
    Shoot to kill!
    [Cadence and Marching Fades]
    Drill Instructor:
    Left, left, left, right.
    Left, left, left, right.
    Left, left, left, right.

If you want a fine example of Cromwellian sapper handiwork, look no further than Corfe Castle in Dorset (not far from TE Lawrence's House at Cloud's Hill and The Tank Museum, Bovington.) There you go Cappy, that's your summer holiday sorted.

Sappers are an ancient concept, maybe even from the Roman age, they dig under walls to... well... undermine it. They use rotting carcasses and stuff them under said tunnels under the walls and then ignite the methane build up to make it go boom. Or simply enough, just burn the props that hold the tunnel walls to cave it in, bringing down the fortification walls.

It’s a little diff in sapper unit. I’m prior Marine 0311 infantry rifleman. In a sapper unit it’s directly embedded with maneuver elements ie. infantry platoons. Making use of manual, ballistic, explosive and thermal breach methods. I myself am a master breacher and subterranean breacher as well. Sapper units don’t do route clearance and act as infantry squads embedded and fight the fight allowing mobility and assaults to gain footholds and follow on assaults. 💪🏽
