Invalauble information presented in a no fuss Michael Briant style that we all love and appreciate. But I must add, you are looking fit and healthy these days. Good on you mate. Your channel is a treat!
Thank you for that! When I made this video I thought it would not get many views but to my surprise its doing better than average... Not sure what part of Oz you are from but as you probably know the sun and warmth really helps the aches and pains!
Thanks Mike a quick pick me up and reminder just before the boat hits the water again - just the job cheers stay safe out in the Caribbean mate Gosh speed to you Malc uk 🇬🇧
Another great video! One note of mention, if lightning gets you, or gps gets interrupted by solar activity... In the worst possible time, in a reef filled area, having a paper backup would be nice. I'm a not old, old fashion guy.
Oguz it is almost impossible. The source I used - Tides End/Bellingdon Charts appear to have gone out of business... So do most of the 2nd hand chart companies...
I am not sure any form of electronics are a adequate backup. Many years ago I even had a soaked and almost unreadable chart with a rogue wave in the Humber estuary! John
Erling your right! NOAA says: Spring tides always happen when the Moon is at the full or new phase, which is when the Sun, Moon and Earth are in alignment.
Yeah, charts are getting out of fashion. It's just the changing times. I got a new boat recently and it doesn't ahve a chart table, don't miiss it. Never used it on my old boat really. Saloon table is good enough.
@@SailingGently I have recently asked this on a forum because I was not sure if I should take my chart table out and give myself more space below deck and just everyone jumped me and said it's so necessary and they are all still using their charts and like to plot that way and it just wouldn't be possible on a saloon table. It just shows how traditions are being kept alive. I do have a sextant as well, but that's just purely for fun. It's a toy, not a necessitiy any more. Smaller boats could do with the extra space below deck. On a 50ft boat you do have the space for a chart table even if it's not used much, but on smaller boats, it's just not necessary any moer. I imagine boats build 10-15 years from now will have designs eliminating the chart table and give extra seats. Thanks for the nice video :)
@@obiwanfisher537 Not sure how it will evolve but I do need a space for 'controls' - dials, battery state, fuel and so on but honestly like you I've not got a paper chart out in years but in the chart table drawer is an old laptop loaded with WW C-map and a GPS receiver - just in case...
electronics are good until they stop working, and then what? giving such advice makes no sense in my eyes particularly if one follows the self sufficent ethos
Everard you could be right, but merchant ships no longer carry paper charts, The Admiralty is going to stop printing paper charts. My sextant only got me to within 10 miles of my position and any one of my 6 separate GPS receivers will get me to within 10 feet of position.. Frankly 95% of of small boat sailors never go out of site of land and most of what I was on about was Pilotage.. But I guess it is a matter of opinion....
I started sailing Robert in the channel out of the Hamble in the early '70s and loved it. I am saddened you hated this video as it was well intentioned - but you can't please all of the people all...............
Michael is an absolute legend and a pleasure to listen to. You would do well to seek out his other videos and find out a bit more about him before being so rude.

Thank you! AND you watched to the end! I'm flattered
A joy to watch. After mucking about in boats (on and off) for about fifty years - I now know how it works. Thanks.
Thanks Michael - mind you never stop being surprised when I get it wrong!
I would love to see more videos like this! I hope you’re enjoying yourself out there!
So pleased you liked it. I thought it might bomb!
Many thanks from Germany for this excellent understandable short introduction into tidal navigation!
Cheers
Glad it was helpful Andre

Love it, great to see you back.

I agree... But I grew up with paper charts and have map books in the boot of the car!
Thanks. Much more to this than I expected.
It is still an interesting subject Kev, despite the arrival of GPS...
Like all my favourite TH-cam channels. I watch your videos multiple times. Totally random. You look like Roger Waters in this video.
Well we were both born within a year of each other - both reaching our 'peaks'... really pleased you like the videos - thank you
Thanks for the video, very helpful in allowing me to begin to understand a subject that I am only just getting my head around
Really pleased Mike & Lucy if it helps... Hard to grasp at first I found then....
Excellent info. Very soothing manner.
Thank you. Glad you found it interesting!
Really helpful 👍🏻 Thanks 🙏
Glad to hear that! Not sure what the reaction would be to this subject!
Enjoyable, as always. Thanks
Thank you Patrick for watching
Found this really helpful,thank you
Chris, I am so pleased you found it useful
Cheers mike will check out the library
Thank you, Jason, for watching
Thank you for the information.
My pleasure Pete - glad you found it interesting
thank you.👍
I am glad you liked it Irmina
Hi Micheal. How is it going in the Carabbean?
Good, except I got wind/sun burn sailing the other day. Thought I was acclimatised!!
❤❤❤❤
Thanks Robert
How can we find copy of Admiralty paper maps cheaper?
Oguz it is almost impossible. The source I used - Tides End/Bellingdon Charts appear to have gone out of business... So do most of the 2nd hand chart companies...
I would prefer a chart, and a mk.1 eyeball
Worked for me all my life, but the Admiralty is going to stop printing paper charts in the near future
I am not sure any form of electronics are a adequate backup. Many years ago I even had a soaked and almost unreadable chart with a rogue wave in the Humber estuary!
John
John I sort of agree although Merchant ships in the main no longer carry paper charts. And wet ones are a big problem as you point out!
weel put thank you
You're very welcome. Glad it was interesting
Now we are talking 😊
Thank you Eric...
God did not want the British going to sea lol
Well, we ruled the waves for a short while
correction: At new moon there is also a spring tide. At half moon there is neap tide

Mario you are right which is why I talked about back up systems later in the video
Don't forget to knit your own ganseys. You never know when you won't be able to buy clothes.
Foolish advice to not bother learning "traditional navigation".

Well at least I found a hairdresser with a sense of humour - So many take themselves far to seriously.....
