There have been 20,780 players in MLB history. Only one of them has ever hit 52 home runs and stolen 51 bases in the same season. That player is also an Ace pitcher, and currently recovering from a UCL. Shohei Ohtani is the greatest player of all time.

Ridiculous. Otani has less than 900 hits and less than 225 home runs. By contrast Hank Aaron, for just one example, if you take away his 755 Home Runs he still finishes with over 3,000 hits. Otani's had some great recent success the past four or five seasons, but he may not even be in the Top 100 All Time. He's got a long way to go to get there.

What I enjoyed so much here is watching the faces of the people in the crowd when they knew it was a homerun. And the look on Mookie Betts face. The awe and joy of their reactions is so great. Ohtani has brought a joyous fun to baseball. Those people are so enjoying the history being made. And in some small way, those fans are now part of that history. Watching grown people having fun, reveling in the baseball heroics of their favorite player, that's truly special. Memories that they'll look back on fondly for the rest of their lives. Thanks Shohei!

Last year he had a 2 HR , 8 RBI game and they still lost like 15-13 then he had to come back the next day and strike out 13 batters just for them to salvage a win
He does look WAY better in blue..
Most players take 12-18 months to recover from Tommy John surgery. This pitcher is playing under not one, but second surgery, and the surgery was exactly one year ago yesterday (where he made history with 6-6 3 HRs 10 RBIs 2 SBs).

What's so incredible was that pitch was about 12 inches above the top of the strike zone.
For a split second, I thought it was a bad swing because I've never seen anyone hit a HR on a pitch that was so far above the strike zone.
But when I heard that loud pop sound off the bat, it sounded like it could be a HR.

That 92MPH pitch was supposed to be a strikeout pitch, well above the zone. And I bet you Shohei was thinking, "He's trying to get me to whiff, he went low last pitch, he's probably thinking high heat, how about I adjust my swing a few inches higher..."
Shohei getting better and better as a slugger and baserunner is probably terrifying to opposing pitching staff. Sure, you can walk him, but then he'll just steal second and possibly third. You can take your chances and try to get a strikeout, fly ball, etc., but with him being able to reach everything but a ball in the dirt, their options are dwindling.

The pitcher isn't bad, just look at the ball Shohei hits on the edge of the strike zone. The catcher and shortstop aren't bad, it's just that the diamond is too small for Shohei. The players who fight aren't bad, it's just that Shohei is a unicorn.

Babe Ruth was the original. 94-46 as a pitcher; 714 HR as a hitter. Shohei has 38 wins as a pitcher. He has a way to go, but certainly is phenomenal.

Shohei's bat speed is PSYCHO. I also thought he got under that pitch from the first angle. Seemed like a popup. Then you see all the other angles and realize he was somehow on top of it the whole way. Just bullied the ball over the fence. He makes it look so smooth and effortless too.

Ohtani is a great and super hitter who has been recording MBL history this season. Shohei used a great pitcher and is under rehabilitation exercise this season. Next season Ohtani and Shohei will weapon both as a single baseball player who is capable of making his own history.

*Why 52/51 is so impressive:* There have been 49 players who hit over 50 home runs, with an average of 7.4 stolen bases (Mays had the most with 24, tied with A-Rod). On the other hand, 241 players have recorded 50 stolen bases, but their average home run count is just 8.4.🦄💨💨
