If you actually watch the show you can tell the difference between real advise and help vs interviews on late night shows. That's not how he really deals with addiction. He's not on a late show to give us all a crash course on psychology.
The part in the pilot story where he said, "... Just understand it" followed by the small plane, for me, started the downward spiral. The last line just officially confirmed that he was completely off.
