I think you hit the nail on the head with this one. What is an alternative with old bourbon and older rye....and lets just assume some old light whisky to cut costs a bit.
Seen two on the shelf at a store for 162 this week. My buddy bought one yesterday. I’m strongly considering grabbing it this week but if it’s gone I’ll just grab another Old Forester single barrel.
I got the Folly for 141. I think that's a great comparison with the EC 18. I like this years EC 18 a little more than the Folly. But i have enjoyed both. Thanks for the review.
In NJ at Wegmans, BottleKing has these all day and night and why do they sit? They do not sell (Price) and that the fact jack. Oh, Forge Oak was Great!!!!
I really enjoyed this one, until I tried the Calumet 16. And then I tried the Jacob’s Well. In my mind, I group these three together as obtainable high aged, sweet oaked bourbons from last year, with different proofs. And then I tossed in EC18 in that mix because I tried one from last year that I actually liked, unlike past years.
You can infer what’s in the blend. Diageo sources their rye from MGP. None of the other Orphan Barrels are 14 years and this is 14 year age stated meaning it is remnants of the other barrels they have from past releases plus a 14 year MGP. I felt like it was good not great. If you want high age, low proof, EC18 is a nice substitute.
My buddy has dropped about $500-750 on buying a few of this particular bottle. I tried it and it’s pretty good, I got a menthol-ie note from it. This is the only orphan barrel product I’ve had, but I would love to try the muckity muck, which I believe is a 24 year old scotch.
Have you reviewed Orphan Barrel Copper Tongue 16 year old? That might be an interesting comparison. I wouldn’t pay $150 for a mediocre 90 proof whiskey simply because it is 14 years old, and while you wouldn’t pay more than $150, I find it hard to believe that you were willing to pay $150 for this bottle. On the other hand, Barterhouse 20 is excellent whiskey, and I would pay $250 for it, if I could somehow find it for that price.
I have passed on this one several times the proof point wasn't there for me for the price. For the same price I will take a Calumet 15 or 16 or a Sam Houston 15 but that's just me.
I am considering starting a channel for tasting /reveiws/distillery tours and distillery tasting dont have a lot of bottles on hand yet i live in ky what is first 10 bottles u recamend i have eagle rare, basil hayden several kinds,,calucut 17,yellowstone several kinds ,minorcase rye, crown swveral kinds and makers also lots of backwoods aged and clear lol
I picked one up in KY for $150. It was actually dusty. I mean the actual bottle had dust all over it. Everything in this store was super overpriced and this was still $150. Shouldn't be too hard to find for MSRP elsewhere.
No way!! Had to be priced wrong. Total wine here sells it for $162. There are other orphan barrels that are more expensive, like muckerty muck, but thats like 250-300

Great review! One of my favorite juices I’ve tried!
Love this one... Each visit seems to reveal something different that is balancing out the sweet oak!
Great review! I have this bottle and got it at Costco for 130…looking forward to opening it. Cheers!

I agree with your review. I had a pour of this at a bar and it was decent, I enjoyed it but didn't want a bottle of it for that price.

There are some old Barrell blends and Single Barrels that would be a great alternative for half the price.
In NJ at Wegmans, BottleKing has these all day and night and why do they sit? They do not sell (Price) and that the fact jack. Oh, Forge Oak was Great!!!!
Calumet 14 is still findable, 98.2 proof. picked up a second bottle last week for $109.99. Every drop 14 Year old Kentucky Bourbon. Cheers.
Knob 18 reminded me of this

Dickel 15 Year comes to mind as an alternative.
Yeah, Dickel 15 comes to mind as a likely much better (cheaper) alternative. Also, Tincup 14yr.
was that Ice Cube's Friday beat in the background? Oh yeah, throw ya neighborhood in the air.... fool cuz it's Friday!! 😂🥃 cheers

What about a Calumet 15?? You can still find those around me for about $140-150 range
Would the Remus Gatsby be close? Its 15 years with a little higher proof at 97.8 and a price closer to 200.

Being a New york company it's all over there for $170 ish. Fair value
@@robinhoodOO7 I live near Syracuse NY and I’ve found it for only $130
Knob Creek 15 is 100 proof, but could be close considering the reviews I have watched. I see a heads up here 😉

What about Calumet Farm? 14, 15, and 16 year
Maybe the Calumet 14, 15, 16?? Just because of the price point
Stuff is everywhere in Florida

Maybe the Knob Creek 18 in the same age, price, & proof range?

I really really enjoyed this but totally get people not wanting to spend $150 on this at 90 proof
I was extremely disappointed with mine. Very one note and it wasn't a good one. I remember it being very harsh.
Id just get a calumet or remus repeal and call it a day
I thought this was decent. Paid $127 at Costco. I think it would’ve been better if they didn’t at the MGP Rye too it and kept it bourbon
I kept seeing this at $150 and just couldn’t pull the trigger. I just didn’t see the value or the need to have it at my house. Cheers
I agree, transparency please. Especially at $150 90 proof.
Hard pass for me.
Hey! We’d love to send you a free cocktail smoker kit from our brand! It’s great for smoking bourbon. Let us know if you’re interested!
If there such scarce barrels? Why aren’t they more transparent about what is in it. No thanks.
I really didn’t care for this one and felt it to be a poor value.
Saw this at my local total wine for $399 ..... Stupid!
No way!! Had to be priced wrong. Total wine here sells it for $162. There are other orphan barrels that are more expensive, like muckerty muck, but thats like 250-300
Too pricey for me.
