  • After a run of four blanks you join me on a nocturnal trip hunting for Barbel on The River Kennet. Heading out on a cool, dew laden, Autumn night and hoping to hunt down a large barbel while still only traveling light. Using a single rod, small rucksack and bike to try and locate these wonderful fish.

Good for you to acknowledge the number of blanks and not just lead everyone to believe that fish like this are easy to come by! I recognise which beat this is - I think - and hardly anyone else fishes there so well done for persisting with it.

Cheers Carlos, thanks for tuning in and stopping by to comment. Well I never see any point in not being open about things, we all blank and that is how it can be, so I do like to show or say about blanks as viewers can be lead to believe that every video is a good trip and no hard ones inbetween. You are correct about the beat too, many thanks again for tuning in.

It's lovely to see the river Kennet in your videos, my dad taught me to fish there 30 years ago up at Thatcham civil service, I'll never forget the heart broken look and absolute sadness in him as the crayfish took over in the late 90s early 2000s, my dad never went back, he's in his 70s now and I still love his stories of the Kennet in the 1960s and 70s, some real monster barble in the Kennet and as a child I was so lucky to see some thanks to my dad. Lovely to see the Kennet and that your keeping safe, keep up the great videos me,my family and my dad love watching now I've set up TH-cam for him in his house haha.

Will Thank you so much. That was very interesting to read about and there are many who have stopped fishing the river, but also i think more are returning to fish it which is good to see and of course some never stopped. I feel your father's pain regaridng how things have changed, I experienced this on the Loddon from the heady days to the current ones and the same for many rivers whereby you do have to put in more trips for the fish and they are more spread out or thinned out, but there are good fish to be had and maybe one day yourself and your father could take a trip back down memory lane for the sake old pleasures and maybe with the chance of a fish. It reminds me so much of myself and my dad, but he's now in a care home.

Bait , tackle , watercraft all on the money as always Mark , good solid honest angling .
You're use of liquid attractants is a game changer in your bait and free offerings and something I've used for a long time , your "waffling on" as you put it is giving everyone enough snippets of good solid information to work on/with , and when doing something a lil' different pays off it's so rewarding.
You've again made a good readily available bait with a few tweaks a deadly bait ...
Well done Mark ( keep "waffling on" fella ) ..

Some of the biggest Carp I've ever caught over here came on live and frozen crayfish, or crawdads is what I've always heard them called! Hey but looks like you don't need them, you've already got pretty good bait there! Holy Cow what a Barbel!!

I’ve used the live and frozen crayfish ( or crawdads as we call them here) , but just about everything that swims here loves crayfish and I have caught big Carp on them too, along with big catfish, Bass, etc.! But if you fish somewhere where Carp is the dominant species, then crayfish are absolutely deadly, generally though I’ve gone out and trapped crayfish or seined them, take them home and put them in a water tight container of some kind, put them in lively and no water on them, snap the lid on and put them in the freezer, and when you’re ready to fish, take one crayfish hook one through the tail just once, and generally under a float, and leave it frozen or at least partially frozen, it will thaw in the water but something about that frozen crayfish it drives the big carp bonkers. That’s just a little tip of what I do with crayfish ( crawdads)! I’d bet those barbel would eat crayfish too.., wouldn’t you think?

@@francolinobasco Recently i purchased a groundbait from the store that i caught skimmers and roach really well with and it smelled amazing. And it actually had all the ingredinets listed on the back. Among the usual, it had a lot of cumin seeds, coriander seeds, fennel seeds, ground carob, turmeric and cinnamon. So i got myself those and will make my own mix. 😁

Hi mark great video yet again.
If i may ask a question, how do you prepare the birdfeed? Do you boil like hemp etc?

    • @francolinobasco
      @francolinobasco  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I soak the seed overnight, and then boil it for 20 to 30 minutes so that much of the water is reduced. I then cover it in a bucket with plenty more hot water and pop lid on and leave to expand more over night ,be sure to fully re hydrate it and bring to boil then simmer for 30 before that. Remember to use a large enough barrel or bucket so that you can use enough water. A baby burco is useful if making large amounts, although i generally just use a large pressure cooker saucepan or 2 and then when done put in bucket and cover with more hot water, seal and leave over night to steam itself more.

Hey there Neil and thank you for commenting and asking a question. I never fish long hooklinks on any of my southern rivers in general when barbel fishing and usually keep to maximum 12 to 18 inch as I find those lengths offer me a better presentation in weedier areas of river where you might be looking at casting or placing baits in smaller open pockets in weed.

Hi Mark I’ve just recently subscribed to your channel after a lot of thought as stalking with one rod and moving swims isn’t my cup of tea as I prefer making camp with two rods, staying put and pre baiting whilst using different baits and altering them when necessary but were all different. Are you going to do any vids in the future on the Trent with two rods on a tripod or is that not your thing. Cheers Steve Hawkins

Hello there Stephen and thank you for tkaing the time to subscribe. Honestly we all have our own style and approach we prefer or suits us better and i have this season also fished static on some trips. I would like to try the Trent at some point and believe me I am happy to but alas I don't drive a car and I think my Ebike battery will not get me to Nottinghamshire haha.

Hey Nick i had wondered where you had gone!? Hope all is well as I did notice a while back you seemed absent? The headlight is a Fenix HM65-R I can't fault it and started out by using it for bike rides mainly before moving it over to being my main fishing headlight. maximum lumens 1000 which is a beam distance of around 160 metres and two different led lights, one flood and one spotlight.ipx8 dust rating and ip68 waterproof rating for being submersed by 2 metres for 30 minutes. the housing is all metal design and they are fully tested to withstand drops of around 2 metres on all the casing that included every side. Spotlight has 4 output levels and floodlight has 3. at maximum brightness which is turbo mode you will get 2 hours but on medum and high what i use the most you will get 22 hours on high with 100 metre range and 48 hours on medium and 57 metres distance. head bands very comfortable and has a nice soft silicon tubing which stops it from slipping around. it also comes with 5 years of free repair warranty. Hope that helps mine has thus far (over a year and a bit) been bomb proof and used a lot. Fenix do do other models that have a red beam if you should need one too. Hope that is of some help.
