- Curious on what to do about that old rose bouquet? Turn your Valentine Day rose bouquet into brand new rose bush by propagating from some cuttings. Propagation is an easy tool for the thrifty gardener to get new plants. Follow me as I guide you through this age old skill in this easy to follow tutorial.
Certain species of roses will be harder to clone, and there are many variables that factor on a cutting taking root. Where did it come from? How old? Even how it was shipped! Many roses travel well over 4000 miles to make a brief appearance to our local grocery stores. Not all roses are treated equally either. A florists roses tend to be treated with more care ,carefully wrapped and slowly cooled. While a Grocers rose is cut earlier in bloom; before the petals are even unfurled, cooled more rapidly and packed tightly to save on cost.
Don't get discouraged if your cutting fails to root. Not Even a Pro rosarian can get all cuttings to root 100% of the time.

Ya! This is how I learned from my Mom. Who learned from her Dad. Thanks for the easy instructions. I had never thought about using a pot. My Mom could stick a rose in the ground and it would be blooming next year.

The problem I have with store bought roses is that they always sell like Cardboard! The fragrance of a rose is as important as their physical beauty. To me anyway. Anytime I buy rose bushes I always make sure they are fragrant varieties!
I completely agree! I prefer the heirloom varieties over all the fancy new age roses. If your looking for fragrance David Austin offers good variety too.

make sure cuttings stay moist but not wet, never let it dry out completely.
Cut, dip in honey, make honey water stick honey coated rose in honey water set in sunny window, watch and wait. It works! I did It.

Nice video. I would only say that some have green fingers and whatever they plant would flourish! It is not necessarily the method that works in every case! There are as many methods as there are planters! All is well and fine. I do not use so much of commercial stuff. I use honey for rooting hormone, and it works as well. Some advocate aloe vera- I have not tried it yet.

good video.. thanks! But, because most floral shop long stem roses are from So. America.. . America and Ecquador, they might not survive in cold weather climates. Just a thought. Here, in NJ, I would have to plant that red long stem rose in a heated greenhouse that doesn't go down below freezing. Just a thought. These may be great to do in the South West and California, but, not in a zone 5 or 6.
Can this method work in the Caribbean especially Trinidad
So, I live in Tucson, Az. and I got the most beautiful roses for Mother's day and I've done just this, but it's hot I mean in the 90's hot, and in a few weeks we may be up in the 100's. I've noticed in some of mine it was already growing mold, some kind of spores? I have them outside in indirect sun so they aren't scorched. Will this work when it's this hot? Should I bring them in the house, or do something else different?
Doing the green house method outside would be too hot for your cuttings, try doing it indoor first and then transplant it outside. Also use a well drained soil and if you feel like it's because of the spores, try using fungicide. fertilizer and vermicompost can also boost up your plant's immune system from diseases and harmful bacteria but it's optional.
I followed your instructions exactly. But all of them molded. They sat in an east window. Should they have been in more direct sunlight? Thank you for your help.
An east window would be good, This method can be difficult with the store bought bouquets If you really want some good luck try this method on a bouquet from a farmers market. I hope you have the best of luck and never give up.
Tip: rather than poke into soil the end of the rose stem that is coated with rooting hormone, use a chopstick to create the hole first. They are cheap or free for the asking.
Or you can use a pencil, like she did in the video.

Question could I put a bowl w a little water in it under the pot and put a bag over half of it to keep it humid??
absolutely! you could also mist it with a little spray bottle, the goal is to keep it humid so that it has time to root.
i did tried this propagating on bouquet since i dont have greenhouse dome i used Ziploc bags , it worked for me my question is when should i remove it from Ziploc bags at what stage ?
I usually wait for a least 2 months. I want good roots on before i remove. But if you have a lot of new leaf growth you can remove it before it hits the sides of your bag.
@@BlackRabbitHomestead my got white mold around the stems so i needed to remove the ziploc greenhouse and i put some fungicide now .

The problem with these shop bought cut roses often are scentless. The classic holding a bouquet to one’s nose is just a fantasy, none of them have any fragrance. Unless you buy it from a specialist breeder like David Austin for example.
I agree. DA roses are my favorite. The scents are much more fragrant than those of the commercial industry.
I have seen some recommendations to use a "soil-free" potting medium. Is there any reason to do that?
Soil is media only means that you're using Cocoa or peat moss it's a big long Explanation cause you probly think hydroponics but I can explain 4 or 5 different hydroponic methods

Hi! I love your video. After I cover the rose cuttings with the plastic bottle do I ever take the bottle off to air it out or do I leave it completely on until it roots and is ready for transplanting?

yes that statement is true. Plants can grow roots without the aid of rooting hormone. The hormone just increases your chance of success.
What if your florists have used growth inhibitors to stop new growth and roots? Will it still work if they have used hormones to stop growth?
I am not sure, but I have a feeling that it wouldn't work. Best bet would be to talk with your florist.
What month is best for this process ?? As you cant do this throughout the year.
I usually do the majority of my cuttings mid summer to fall.

I have tried so many times to propagate a rose from cutting... a bouquet, but nothing works... I do exactly what you've shown, and I have never been able to get even one little root to start.. the stems either brown and get hard and brown completely, or they get a white covering and rot.. ive tried sand, water, planting mix, container mix, and good old fashion dirt.. and I get Nada..
I won't lie to you, it's really quite difficult to get a ride started from a bouquet. A lot depends on how old the flowers are and when they were cut. Also the best time of year to propagate roses ( at least in the northeast U.S.A.) Is from June through september. Cutting directly from the plant is still the best option. But if you have the cut flowers it doesn't hurt to try. I've had my fair share of disappointment with this method. Trust me you are not alone.

I found it easy to propagate roses from a bush but not from the florist flowers. I bet it’s due to their hormones that inhibit new growth.
I find roses from the florist do not have any aroma, or at least nothing like typically grown types. Does this carry over to propagation results?
Pretty much, the rose scent will be the same as the parent plant. I prefer to clone the old roses because they have a deeper scent and bloom better.

So my friend gave my mom a rose from Ecuador and it’s beautiful. So beautiful that she wants to regrow it. I have a couple of questions and hopefully can be answered.
1) can this be done since it’s a plant from a totally different area. (I live in the panhandle of Texas)
2) how quick do I need to get it cut and planted
3) is there a store like Home Depot or Lowe’s that I can buy rooting soil and hormone or do I have to order it.
4) what is the best green house you can do with stuff at home?
I would love anybody’s help and due to my lack of flower knowledge and the roses background I am unsure of what to do.
Hopefully you already got your answer somewhere else but 1) Yes 2) Before it starts to wilt is ideal 3) Any big store like those/Walmart are good and should sell hormone also, for soil you just want something that is loose and drains well 4) Any clear/white storage tub works well. If only doing a few cuttings a white 5 gallon bucket would work fine. Greenhouses have a lot of pros, and also a lot of cons. Not totally sure of Ecuador's climate but guessing its pretty similar to texas and most likely wouldnt need the greenhouse. If ecuador is a very humid environment versus texas being very dry, maybe consider doing it, then.
I would agree. It's best to root as soon as you can. The longer the rose is separated from the plant the more your chances of success decrease.

It depends on many factors, when and where the rose first comes from. How old is it and so on. Fresh cut roses seem to work best for this method to have hope. It's possible but not a very good cloning method.
How do I overwinter the new plant. They don’t do well indoors.
if the rose is hardy for your zone you can plant it. I would take extra precautions. If you could build a make shift cold frame or put a tote over top of the plant for the winter......make sure there are holes though. I also mulch deeply.
Some people are saying you can't root roses from bouquets.
It really depends on a variety of factors. like how old the roses are, how long have they been cut for and so on. The best way is to know your grower. Get the freshest flowers possible.
Well, technically cloning isn't "reproduction..." it's cloning. That plant you cloned is actually the same plant, not a copy. I wonder, can plants split their consciousness between their different parts? By switching their consciousness between each separated part which becomes another plant rapidly, can they pretty much focus on several things at once??? Just and idea.
What can i use instead of rooting powder which is unavailable in my country
I haven't tried any other rooting hormones as of yet, but I'm looking into it. I've heard honey works but like i said i haven't tried it myself so have no opinion on it.

How often should we water it
You want to keep the soil moist like a damp sponge. if you over water you could cause it to rot before it puts out roots. so remember damp to touch, if you press your finger down you should not have water filling in the dent.
I’ve tried this same technique before. Didn’t work!
Florists usually use hormones to inhibit new growth and roots so that’s prob why. I have had no luck with flowers from the shop too

And it was the first time I have ever decorated. I am happy with how it turned out. This is my first year of doing gardening. And I'm super into it. I used play video games but now I'm into roses. Like roses everything lol!

To be honest not so great out of all the cutting i did on the video one looks like it may make it. This method is not the surest method to get roses. But it's still possible. My thoughts are that it doesn't hurt to try but not to get disappointed if it doesn't work.

The roses she showed at the end didn't look like they came from a storebought bouquet. I hate it when people aren't honest in their videos.
Your absolutely right they were different roses. The roses that were rooted i think were done in the June before. I had gotten pink roses from a farmers market. I managed to get two or three to root. The roses from this video were from a grocery store, I had no idea where they came from or what type. Still no harm in trying. As I said in earlier it is still possible to get a bouquet to bloom. None the less I'm sorry if you felt i misled you, that was never my intention.

Will this method work on a rose that is already producing shoots?
It should, although you may have to cut back the new shoots to conserve energy. You ideally want the plant to send hormones on roots
