Just so you know, the record producer the turns Greg down is the actual Greg from the sitcom, and also the teacher who stops the kids picking on Peter during school lunch is the original Peter from the sitcom.
Also, if you were a fan who had watch most of the episodes / reruns of the Sitcom. This movie becomes even more funny, because classic episode plot lines and character tropes were incorporated into the movie script very creatively and well executed.

I was an original Brady Bunch fan. My kids and I fell in love with this movie and spent many hours watching and re-watching this movie! The parts of Jan you highlighted are our favorites, also, In fact, Jan's face (where Marcia says she doesn't have any friends) was actually my daughters phone screen for awhile! The writers wove so many of the original Brady stories into this movie...I thought it was brilliant, and I still do. Thank you for taking the time to review this iconic movie!

It's quite literally one of the funniest movie's I've ever seen. Pure genius plucking the family exactly as-is from the 70s into the very rude, crude, and edgy 90s.
The in-jokes and respect to the series is top notch and just ends up actually creating hilarious situations.
Also, not that it's totally required but you owe it to yourself to be familar with the orignal series or a lot of the intricacies and details in this movie will totally fly over your head.

There was a seismic shift in fashion, culture, and style in the 20 years between the TV show and the movie, yet 30 years after the movie not much has changed except for cars and phones. And Sears. Poor Sears.

Well said. The huge shift in culture between 1974 and 1994 was something the movie played up again and again, to hilarious effect. You wouldn't be able to do that with a culture clash between 2004 and 2024: the tech has changed, but fashion and culture isn't vastly different.
Also: I mourn the loss of Sears, and am sad that they became so irrelevant. When my local Sears closed, one of the last things they took out of the stores were those dated cash registers from the 1990s... the same ones they must have been using when The Brady Bunch Movie came out.

Ross Harper as Chuck Brady the 7th Brady sibling LOL! Christopher Daniel Barnes would finally become Greg Brady in the Brady Bunch movie and it's sequel. A third film was made but only Shelley Long and Gary Cole reprised there roles in the Brady Bunch At The White House. Everyone else was recast! 🤗🤔📺👍

Something you wouldn't know if you aren't familiar with the original series (which I grew up with, and have seen in its entirety multiple times) is that the characteristics/actions of the Brady kids in this movie often reflect plotlines from specific episodes, rather than being traits that the kids maintained throughout the series. For example, there is one episode where Bobby was named a hall monitor in school and became unpopular for reporting his peers. Being a narc wasn't a trait he displayed outside of that episode, though. Peter's voice changed in one of the episodes involving the Brady kids being a singing group (there are a couple), with the drama being that he felt like he couldn't participate any longer because of the puberty-related changes. The movie ran with that, even though I don't think Peter's cracking voice was heard outside of that sole episode.
In terms of plot points or side details, many of them were recycled. There was an early episode where Cindy lost her Kitty Carry-All doll (stolen by Tiger, it turned out), and blamed Bobby for it. The Marcia/Jan conflict appeared in multiple episodes (though not the majority by any means), which occasionally focused on Jan's difficulty finding her own identity. Jan did once don a black wig (though not a gigantic Afro wig) in a silly and short-lived attempt to change her image. There was an episode where Marcia got whacked in the nose with an errant football pass from Peter, shortly after using "something suddenly came up" to excuse herself from a date so that she could go out with a more popular boy she liked better (who, upon seeing her nose, used the same excuse on her). There was absolutely an episode where Jan made up a boyfriend named George Glass because she was chafing at her older sister's greater popularity, and of course, a moment where Jan uttered the immortal "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia," after the teachers at school kept comparing her to her older, socially successful sister. And Mom always told the boys, "Don't play ball in the house," which kept being repeated in Peter's dream after he accidentally tossed a basketball out the boys' bedroom door, which bounced down the stairs and broke Mom's favorite vase. (I recall a reference to that scene being in one of the two movies.)
When i first saw this movie, I loved it and thought it was a unique way of parodying the original show, but I also got all of the references and knew the songs (Sunshine Day!) from the series, which made it fun. (There wasn't much in the way of meta moviemaking back in 1995.) It's interesting to think about someone stumbling on this movie without knowing any of the references, and still loving it.

The Brady clothes 1969 to the 70s were so OBVIOUSLY Sears clothes. Tuffskin jeans, those smock dresses, and the parent's polyester lesiure clothes after 1970. Sears and to a lesser extent Pennys were a style unto themselves. A 50s 70s fusion.
Going to Sears was the center point of the movie...along with the voices Jan heard.

When I was a kid in the 90s they used to show The Brady Bunch all the time on Nick at Nite and TV Land, but I didn't fully understand the passage of time, apparently, so I thought it was a current show until my dad asked me what I was watching and then said "oh, I loved the Brady Bunch when I was your age!" Gurl your review is cute and it’s fun to see this film through the eyes of someone who doesn’t know anything about the TV show. The unfortunate part is things you’re confused by or just toss aside are really amazing “in” jokes and nods to classic episodes.
For example the reason Peter’s voice keeps cracking is in one of the most famous episode the Brady kids form a singing group called The Silver Platters (they’re trying to win money to buy a silvervplatter for their parents anniversary) and just before they’re set to go on TV for the contest Peter’s voice starts breaking and OH NO! What are we gonna do if he can’t sing? !! This is also why Greg wants to be a rock sta r.
Also the actor who plays the next door neighbor dad that you point out we might know from Better Call Saul, if you watched TV back in that time you’d know he’s much more famous as half the duo of Lenny & Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley. The actress playing his wife played Charlene on Designing Women. The movie is great on its own but when you “get” the hundreds of inside jokes and nods it’s spectacular!

I loved your review - you did such a great job of hitting all the important points - I'm old enough to remember when the show was on originally, and even back then it was old-fashioned and unreal, more like the sitcoms of the 50s - but the cast was so darn likeable - and don't feel bad if you missed some in-jokes, I grew up with it and I missed some too - I hope you do more reviews like this - you're quite good - btw, one more thing I noticed - the actress who play Cindy later went on to play Rory Gilmore's roommate at Yale who was only like 15 - she was fun in that too - and finally, I loved the line about shopping at Sears - I always thought it was just that I was boring - now I can blame it on leaded gasoline - brilliant! - thanks for this!

I love that they took a family from the 1970s and just stuck them in the 90s with absolutely no explanation. And the family seems oblivious that they're 2 decades behind everyone. Like why in the hell would a teenager in 1995 give a shit about Davy Jones? And why can't Mike Brady understand that his 1970s house is not in style anymore?

In Israel, they don’t know the TV show but they heard of the American “cultural phenomenon” called the Brady Bunch. When the movie played there in the theatres, most people who saw it said they “didn’t get it”. I myself, grew up in the US during the 70’s and 80’s so I was very familiar with the show and sang the theme song on long bus trips ect. I tried to explain to my Israeli friends about how the theme song lures in a young child with a catchy tune and an interesting story “about a man named Brady” and how I watched it because I thought it would explain where babies come from… and the show explained nothing about that… they were even more confused.

I worked in video rental in the late 1990's and early 2000's. This movie, and its sequel, were always favourites to play on the in-store video system. So campy, so much fun and so very, very quotable. I think the first film must have been a moderate hit here in Australia, because one of the local networks (Channel 10) had a failing prime time drama series called Echo Point, which was canned at the end of 1995 and replaced by reruns of the original Brady Bunch TV series in early 1996, which actually faired better in the ratings than Echo Point ever did.

I'm just about 44 years old, and I desperately wanted to see this movie at the time because I HATED the Brady Bunch. I came away from the movie with a new appreciation for it, though I still prefer the two theatrical films that came out in the 90s. The sequel even has a reference to the awful Brady Kids cartoon.

@bulbasaurcowboy Well you see that was part of the joke LOL! If you pay attention to the first movie notice how close they try to duplicate the exact music and setting of the tv series in the opening credits! Also note the difference in contrast aka lighting between the Brady scenes and the scenes in the real world outside the Brady household. This wasn't as noticible in the second film. Plus some of the original cast make cameos in the movie!

Do the sequel! Its so much more absurd but also do your research.. you skipped over so many easter eggs from the show.

Yes, I did think this was the original show back in the day. You are not alone.

I didn’t like this movie at all. It sexualized a series that was good precisely because it was innocent. It alienated its core audience by mocking the show. I can’t believe anyone would think this trash was the original show. You really should have watched the original series before watching the movie.

You really need to do some research before you review a movie. There were some hard hitting actors/comedians in this film. You really have no clue what they are known for. To think this was the original and not a parody shows your lack of insight.

As a kid I never watched the Brady Bunch series, only the movies. So I thought it was as whimsical as the movies and then I realised the movies were parodies
