Closing bells for London's oldest bellmaker

A visit to the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, the oldest manufacturer in all of England, is a trip back in time. For about half a millennium, they have been producing bells for churches, cathedrals and city halls, as well as the original Liberty Bell. But sadly, this old-school shop is closing for good. Jim Axelrod reports.

I love the sound of church bells. Some churches now use recorded bell sounds but I could always tell if they are fake bells. And they don't sound as nice as real bells.

Whitechapel had already long collaborated with John Taylor's of Loughborough, Leics thus its bells needing attention were restored within the UK.
Whitechapel now has a bell museum and Taylors have a mini-museum alongside the grant maintained foundry.

I like the way the interviewer looked down when he said the bell was cast here, its do interesting, I just found out the church where I Volunteer has just one bell, when I looked it up, it's by Henry Jordan was in business 1442-1468, Bell still in use, in the 19th century Various reverends would write books on bells, their weights, there markings, & in Ingland Bell wringing is fairly popular, just walk in most Medival churches which date on average 12th - 14th centuries, if they have a load of bells there will be bell wringing, I went to one church & on the wall a note written 'Oranges & Lemons' and it gave the timings of the ropes to be pulled,
