- Here’s an old standard saltwater pattern, Lefty Kreh’s Deceiver, tied in a 3” size to catch Coho Salmon in saltwater. The pattern features the fluorescent chartreuse and pink that these salmon love to chase. Although it incorporates quite a few materials, any tier with moderate skills should be able to manage it.
Hook: Ahrex SA220 #6 or any standard saltwater hook #4
Thread: UTC 140 denier, color to match tail
Tail: six Chinese rooster neck hackles, fluorescent pink or chartreuse, with a single strand of holographic silver Flashabou and 3-4 strands of pearl Flashabou along the sides
Body: flat diamond braid in silver or pearl, with an underbody of white supreme hair/super hair
Wing: fluorescent pink or chartreuse bucktail, topped with 3-4 strands of peacock herl
Throat: red Krystal Flash
Head: thread to match tail color, coated with UV resin over 3/32” super-pearl adhesive eyes

Ive been fishing the sound for years and just recently took up fly fishing the sound and all I can say is I wish I had started this sooner! Love the video as I am all learning to make my own flies. These look great
Just found you channel. Great pattern for the sound and hood canal. And it works! What rod and reel combo are you using ? Thank you for sharing the fly! 😀
Thanks for your comment! I use an 8wt combo consisting of a Echo Boost Blue rod/Sage Spectrum reel. For 7-wt, I use an Echo Ion XL rod/Temple Fork BVK SD reel. On Both rods, I use either Rio Outbound Short or Scientific Anglers Sonar Titan intermediate lines.
The olive and white if not productive for salmon I bet would catch Smallmouth !
