"Pain is trapped sensation." Peter Levine.
In this live, I riff on what pain is from the view of the new traumatology and how my students work with it in SmartBody SmartMind™ (SBSM).
hint: they actually don't work with the pain per se, they work with understanding their physiological stress responses as well as building internal interoception capacity, which in turn helps shift the pain responses via greater nervous system regulation.

Registration is open now through February 22 (Thursday).

You just made me realize why I still find myself not breathing at times...so doing breathework is not enough because the holding of my breathe is linked to childhood trauma?

I wish someone would speak on the trauma of bullying in childhood due to racism which is not in the ACES study. I learned to hate who I am. I hated my language, my ethnic hair, the music and customs of my ancestors, etc…….all that as a little kid. I learned to reject myself early in life as an attempt to connect with others and lost my connection to myself

I'm sorry for your experience. I do recognise everything you wrote. I got severely bullied for being (half) black, 4c hair and it even went on, into adulthood.
Example: Colleagues waiting for me to walk into the room, holding a Unicef flyer with IMO beautiful African babies. Saying "Those are too ugly to stay alive". Looking at me, with devilish eyes. I didn't respond, as I was still very insecure back then and felt ugly my entire life. Believe it or not. I was (always) extremely kind to everyone. So i didn't understand. But in over 40 years of bullying I've learned, many (insecure) people look down on everything different from the standard beauty ideals etc.
Some people called us "Bokito". A gorilla that went on a rampage in the zoo. My ex husband called me chimpansee.
People told me that we stink (smell filthy). Are lazy, dumb and just plain ugly. Some thought we all love fried chicken, but they didn't mean any harm.
Because I speak the language very well, many wonder why. Or ask me why i use such decent words and have such a vocabulary. Even a therapist couldn't grasp the fact where it came from. I loved to read and learn the language as good as possible. In hopes that I could get a good job and be considered a native, but due to my color I'm always called a foreigner or "allochtoon".
Recently there's even a political party called PVV that is known to be racist to POC, "allochtonen" and even wants to make people with a Morrocan background to leave the country.
The concentration of PVV voters around my area are astonishing. When I ride my bicycle, i often heared racist slurs.
At work unfortunately I've been falsely accused of stealing a "Parker" pen, which was found later. As often people bluntly claim in public we're likely to be criminals.
Was told I didn't fit in the group, without a 'real' reason.
In one job a black colleague told me I wouldn't be hired for the job, if she hadn't intervened (She was black as well. And the only one in a huge company).
As I had a way better resume, but the chiefs didn't want to hire a black person.
Often colleagues openly expressed their doubt in my intelligence and skills, when I just came into a new job. I didn't even get the chance to prove myself at first.
It's common around here though that in office jobs or other well payed jobs, blacks are either under represented or just won't get hired.
It's no problem in jobs, like cleaning and such.
As around here, we're not expected to be intelligent to begin with.
Unfortunately the region where I was raised, is known to be very racist toward blacks.
There are lots of networks of Caucasian people, who help eachother to find jobs and hold on to one.
I've witnessed it a lot. Wouldn't matter if all of them, would've been better in doing the actual job.
Doctors have been denying my pain a long time and dismissed me with gall and kidney colics, plus deep vein thrombosis twice and more.
I got much physical damage afterwards and after reading my medical file, i found out they wrote I was a hypochondriac. While I had a thrombosis and tachycardia, plus nerve pain from vitamin D en B12 deficiency. No doctor ever mentioned the fact that I needed (extra) vitamin D, even though I grew extremely fatigue and had told doctor about it before.
(Black people need extra vitamin D, it's been well researched).
After I got OTC vitamins prescribed by an accupuncturist, I got rid of neuropathy and some fatigue.
I did research on doctors. As I know I have a high pain tolerance, and found out (black) women and women in general are more easily dismissed. It broke my heart. As I've been there and still are up to a certain level. As their negligence caused me to lose my job.
I dare say my GP is racist as well. My former GP even told me, how he was the only doctor to hire black personell, as his colleagues wouldn't. It disgusts me. As I have to pay a lot on health insurance.
It got me enraged for a long time. But then i decided to focus on gardening and my talents. Sculpting, making jewelry. Make music and meditated.
I learned to love myself again. Due to the bullying I was often alone, but in the meantime I learned to do the above. I also knitted myself some warm shawls, sweaters and tell myself to only invest energy in people who treat me with respect.
Which are few, but I learned I don't need others to be happy and feel good about myself.
I don't listen to the opinion of smallminded people with false sense if superiority anymore.
Happiness starts in myself. If i expect it from anyone else, it might be a long wait. Irene has some valuable info that helped a lot. As well as mindfullness.
If I have an off day, I put on some music that cheers me up and try to focus on God, nature and meditate.
(Which might not be for everyone, i know)
But please know sister. You're beautiful just the way you are. And I ain't sweet talking. Don't let anyone tell you different. I want you to look in the mirror each day and tell yourself you're beautiful, intelligent and worthy of respect.
      Embrace yourself and your talents.
I also got to know black music eg Marvin Gaye, The Tempations, Aretha Franklin, but also modern artists. There are so many talented brothers and sisters, people of all colors listen to.
Love from Holland. I hope you'll find much deserved love and healing.

@@MischiouI m sorry ,I never expected to hear there is racism in Holland...I dunno why, I guess bcoz I know ppl from all over the world go and live there and also I thought they are more openminded
Racism is the worst thing bcoz there nothing you can do to change even if you wanted to. Its a direct attack to who you are ,nullyfying you rejecting the whole of you
I recently went as far as pondering who would first bring such a vile concept in the human intellect

Excellent explanations of the focus of interoception (many are familiar with proprioception - our body in the space around us) and the connections that can get glitches because of fight flight freeze responses. I’ve had spontaneous things surfacing and I have been allowing and curious while it happens to understand those connections and the releases that are happening. ❤. SO GOOD!!

Fasting also helped me to open up the blocked, frozen areas in my body. It was also interesting to experience the heavy feelings being purged out, followed by opening in certain areas, which I could feel better afterwards. Do you have any experience, knowledge about fasting’s impact on shut down / freeze?

Hello, Sophia from Team Lyon here. Thank you for your comment. Irene is not taking private clients at this time, but there are a few ways in which you can work with her.
The 21 Day Nervous System Tune-Up is a self-study online course that teaches you basics of healing trauma and nervous system health. It’s the perfect blend of polyvagal theory and somatic neurosensory exercises to get you started on this journey. 21daytuneup.com/
Then, if you want to dive deeper, you can check out the more in-depth SmartBody SmartMind™ (SBSM™) program. SBSM™ is an online group program that runs in 12-week ‘semesters’ once or twice a year, and teaches you how to become your own medicine. Its focus is to restore nervous system regulation through polyvagal-informed education, practical neurosensory exercises, and interactive support. smartbodysmartmind.com/
If you are looking to find a practitioner for private sessions, Irene strongly suggests taking some time to watch a video she created detailing “How to find a good practitioner.”
We also recommend taking a look over the Team Lyon page as many have their own practices and accept clients.
Two directories that might be of help are:
      Somatic Experiencing practitioners: directory.traumahealing.org/
      Feldenkrais practitioners: feldenkrais.com/practitioner-search/
Once again, thank you for your interest in working with Irene and we wish you the best on your healing journey.

Is it possible to be kind of amorphous and loose and then tight and armored at the same time? I feel like some layers are kind of doughy but then the fascia is really tight. Some of the joints are too open, some too closed.

    Wow. Eye-opener here , but also a Question I would like to ask;
If someone has childhood trauma and whiplash injury, can it be that someone is suffering scoliose ( very little bit still) and chronic neck-shoulderpain from that particular part of life and could it be healed by healing the nervous system? Also the scoliose part? Thank you so much❤

Hello, Sophia from Team Lyon here. Thank you for your question and for sharing about what is going on for you. We appreciate you sharing. However, we are not able to consult or diagnose in this comment section. Irene's work and programs are educational in the means that they provide you with education to learn more about the nervous system and practices to help become your own medicine.
As Irene and her team are not doctors, psychiatrists or medical professionals, we can't make any guarantees about specific health conditions improving but we can say that many people have had success with Irene's program and have used it to heal numerous things that they were struggling with. There's a multitude of people with these varieties of conditions who are SBSM Alumni, reporting good success and you can read about them here: www.smartbodysmartmind.com/client-stories/
Many folks find this nervous system work at its heart is about becoming who YOU truly are and finally learning what it means to go from living in a state of survival, stress and anxiety to a place of hope, possibility and solid well-being.
A good place to start would be Irene's free resources and mini training "Healing Trauma", all of which are housed under this link:
      irenelyon.com/free-resources/
If diving into this world of nervous system education and its practices speak to you and you want to go deeper than what she offers through her free resources (which are pretty extensive!), then be sure to check out the online programs: The 21-Day Nervous System Tune-Up and SmartBodySmartMind, where you can ask your specific question and be supported by our team of expertly trained moderators. Hope this helps!

What do you think of neurofeedback, biofeedback.
I did feldenkrais and I got overwhelmed . It is so difficult to find a practioner that believes little is better. She thinks enough to create something and not stay stick.
So I need more capacity and I read neurofeedback. Going to the body through brain waves response.

Hello, Sophia from Team Lyon here. We do get many questions around how Irene's work compares to other systems of healing that are out there. It’s important to understand that everyone is different and pending a person’s trauma history, the work they’ve already done, the level of support they have ... etc., will determine how they respond to any mode of treatment or therapeutic protocol.
All that to say that we can't directly vouch for other programs, but we can vouch for the quality of Irene's work and programs. One of her core teachings is "titration", more info can be found here: th-cam.com/video/n50ugTCeomU/w-d-xo.html I hope this helps a little.

Why do you offer SBSM in 12 weeks if almost no one can get through the program in that timeframe? Why not space it out at a more titrated pace like 6-9 months? This would make it more accessible and build student relationships and create a better sense of ease and regulation, would it not?

    • @IreneLyon
      @IreneLyon  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Hello, Sophia with Team Lyon here. The curriculum has been formulated in this specific way by Irene, but one of the first and basic teachings of SBSM is that each person needs to find their own pace. There is a good portion of students who prever the 12-week format, but another one who prefer to space it out, watch the replays, rewatch older lessons and take time to integrate, sometimes months or a year. Going at your own pace is encouraged and recommended and this does not compromise the overall experience or learning process at all. Please feel free to reach out to our support inbox for more information, as registrations have been extended by a few hours.

    • @dawnsdreamacres
      @dawnsdreamacres 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

From what I’ve experienced in the program, I think it would be impossible to choose a course length that would work for all. I’ve never made it through in 12 weeks, and am sure not sure I could finish it in 6-9 months, either 😜 because I need lots of time in between as things integrate-but I know the material is always there, and I know another round of SBSM will be coming again.
Even though I initially had to sit with the discomfort of not finishing-I went into my first round of SBSM fired up and ready to check this off my list!-having the slowness of my own healing pace sink in was an essential part of my recovery. The slowness of rewiring the survival mechanisms that no longer serve me, and the realization that the only pace that matters in this work is my own.
On the other hand, I think I got my deepest benefit from just one of the first SBSM live sessions, in a Q and A with Seth a couple of years ago. I learned a somatic tool that I still use almost daily; it soothes my nervous system in the nicest way. Just learning that one little tool that happened to click for me-learning when to use it, making modifications to it over time, and getting to see that I keep showing up for myself with it-has been transformative.

    • @Tigergrrll
      @Tigergrrll หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You get to keep and participate in the program on an ongoing basis- so you can take it at your own pace and know that it is there for you when you might need to take a break. You can come back to it anytime. I love too that the alumni can attend all the live calls and they also receive any new material added to the course. A very generous program.

  • @pedrom8831

I really struggle with the idea of capacity. My nervous system is on high alert seemingly all the time, with intense buzzing and muscle contraction, but I was lead to believe that I needed to sit with the sensations, allow them to move through, and then my body would settle.
This hasn’t been the case. In fact, it’s made my symptoms 1000% worse. It’s odd because I can tolerate the symptoms, in the sense that there’s rarely a sharp spike of raw overwhelming emotion (a trigger or similar), but the built up energy is so uncomfortable and exhausting to deal with in the long term, especially now my sleep has fallen of a cliff.
I’ve been told I likely have global high intensity activation, but there seems to be very little information about this online.
My intuition is telling me to stop all my tracking of sensations, but it’s a very hard habit to break, especially when you’re told that you need to go ‘down and through’ the trapped energy to get to a calmer state.
