Shawn Murinko is an attorney in Washington state, who cares passionately about civil rights. He was appointed to serve on the Washington state Human Rights Commission for the last six years, appointed by then Governor Chris Gregoire and reappointed by Governor Inslee.
So... what happened when he received a dream job opportunity as a Disability Program Manager, working at the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division in Maryland?
He was qualified for the job. He was offered the job... BUT
unfortunately Maryland state wouldn't pay for supports that would allow Shawn to independently live in the community, work full time, and contribute to society.
However, Maryland would have paid to put him in an institution costing hundreds of dollars a day, while robbing him of his freedom. Yes, folks. It was okay to put him in an institution but not to provide him the supports in the community that he needs to get up out of bed, to go to work and to support his family,
Although this 6 minute video isn't autism-specific, it is disability-related and shines a light on how different community support rules between state makes it difficult or impossible for people with disabilities to move to another state much less more up to a dream job.
