The Fall Of The Airbus A318 Baby Bus

  • Only two airlines currently use the A318 on a scheduled basis. The aircraft was never popular, largely due to its poor economics compared with the alternatives. With nine scheduled users in the past decade, the aircraft was able to find a home in Latin America, but Europe was the leading region.

I had the chance to fly on an A318 (AF) in 2019! From a flying perspective it really is just like it’s bigger brothers, but when I looked down the aisle during deboarding it really felt short. All in all I’m happy that I got to fly this rare member of the A320 family and just because of its uniqueness I’d say it’s probably my favorite Airbus 😁

Same. Me, my aunt and my cousin, for my cousin's first plane ride, took one from Raleigh-Durham to Seattle-Tacoma on March 31, 2019 to meet a girl I'd been dating online for a while + a trip to Seattle anyways. 💯 was a time to be alive, Delta was a wonderful airline that whole 6 hour experience.

I am curious about the A340 and A380. Once the huge R&D costs are factored in, did Airbus make profits with these types? Only 377 A340s were sold and 246 A380s.
With Boeing stopping production of the 747 next year, are there still 4 engine civilian passenger planes being built? The AvroRJ/BAe146 was discontinued like 20 years ago. Ilyushin Il-96?

  • @the_cheese

What gives the A318 its biggest advantage (shorter runway takeoffs) is also its biggest drawback: the wing it shares with the A320 family. It has to fly that big wing around with few passengers to spread the costs, and so loses out to slightly smaller planes with better economics when runway size isn't an issue. In LATAM, it did well on hot and high routes with low traffic volumes, because that same oversized wing generates a large amount of lift when compared to the size of the plane, even when the ambient air temperature is high and the local air pressure is low. Only to make economic sense, that route also has to be 50-66% of the A318's max range, with just barely a full load of passengers.
Thanks for another great video, Simple Flying Team!!

An addition factor that is not mentioned is engine choice. There was no IAE offering on the 318, which was a strike against commonality for airlines that favoured that engine. The PW6000 was instead plagued with issues.
British Airways had been phasing out all its CFM Airbuses, making its A318 operation all the more niche.

    • @peteconrad2077
      @peteconrad2077 2 ปีที่แล้ว

There was no commonality benefit anyway. The old A320s used a completely different version of the CFM56.

the A318 always flies over my house in Florence, together with the B737 it's the only aircraft I can see from my window when a go around happens, so I really like this aircraft. also, Florence airport is totally useless and everybody living here would like to see it shut down, since the Pisa airport is much better and still very close to Florence. instead, the city administration wants to build another runway which would cause major issues to the motorised traffic as well as pollution concerns regarding more airplanes flying low over UNESCO sites in the city center which is full of 13-14th century architecture works of art

The A318s real strength against the ERJ and E19x series was it's range. It was way ahead. Once the A220s came out, with 6000km+ range, it didn't really make sense anymore, superficially. Still I think it should have gotten a neo upgrade and some design refinements, as carriers with an all Airbus A31x/A32x fleet could then have as the full range of single-aisle aircraft sizes without having to mix aircraft families, which is a good selling point. Given the commonality, the cost of offering the aircraft would be minimal. With a neo, it would likely have had true trans-atlantic capability.

Shrink models usually do not work cause the cost to run is almost same but capacity is restricted. Also shrink models are usually heavier than planes that have been truly designed for the size segment. A318 is not exception: 747SP, A340-200, MD-87, B737-600, L-1011-500 all have been commercial failures compared to their bigger sisters. In NEO and MAX -generations we could also say, that A319NEO and B737-7MAX are turning obsolete also as wise airline would by A220-300 instead of those two.

A F9 A318 captain told me he didn't like how it handled landing. Due to the shortness of the aircraft on approach the main wing, to some degree, impeded airflow over the horizontal stabilizer.

Nope, they didn’t have A318s! Their smallest Airbus was the A319! The only two A318s in the UK were or are BA and Titan

Some chose A220 as a very good replacement for the A318.

It is the ideal replacement for both the A318 and A319

I think you will find that most interesting use for this plane is with the Australian Antarctic Division who regularly send these aircraft to the Australian stations in Antarctica over the summer months and land on ice runways.
