When you pass your test, it shows you can drive to the requirements - then you start learning to drive. The most important factor is keeping the vehicle under 100% control at all times - 36 years after passing my test I have learned much, but assume that I still don't know it all.
My brother lost control of his car and died at 30 years old as a result so I have experienced the after effect. It was the day my father became an old man.

The more I think about it, the more I realise just how young 17 is to be given the responsibility of car. You can't really grasp at that age how serious it is. You're too cought up in the feeling of freedom and excitement and yes in some cases, showing off, to ever really think you could take your own life and/or someone elses if you really get it wrong.
Passing your L test is all well and good but it doesn't necessarily instill the right attitude, or prepare you for the challenges of driving in the real world such as heavy rain at night, fog, snow/ice, leaves/mud/standing water on the road etc. You have to learn all that for yourself! Luckily over the years I have done so, but I'd be lying if I said I never had a few close shaves!

I am enjoying these uploads. You must have quite a collection on VHS. I used to watch this show and many others back then religiously.

It has had an impact on me. My Theory test is in 3 days and I will remember to always maintain my focus.

Good luck with you're test. Took me 3 attempts for my practical and the best advice I can give is not to tell anyone when the test is so there is no added pressure
      Worked wonders for me

Too many drivers, even these days, don't realise that the faster you are going that A: You have less time to react to potential hazards B: will take longer for the vehicle to stop and C: the impact of a crash is harder. I also think some young drivers become over confident. I also think some drivers may feel indestructible as they are surrounded by a steel cage with modern safety features, which are only designed to work at speed limit speeds. Mum had a head on crash on a country road, neither her nor the car she hit was speeding and thus the crumple zones and airbag did exactly what they were designed to do and both mum and the other driver got out with minor injuries.
