For someone who was "totally doped up" he still did an amazing job with his unplugged performance. Though he was definitely deep in his addiction during this time, I've heard he did just enough before this set to keep the withdrawals away. Plus the band hadn't even played together for a while, much less practiced for this particular show. So all things considered, yeah, I think it's one of the best MTV unplugged performances. And what breaks my heart more than anything was Layne HATED how no one wanted to talk about his music or his vocals or his art or anything else, just his drug addiction. And here we are 30 years later still doing that same thing to him. How many rock stars since the 60's were constantly drunk, coked up or whatever else they were always on and people just chalked it up to the lifestyle and let it slide, but for some reason it's Layne that gets saddled with "junkie" but he was so more than that. People misunderstood why he was so honest when he wrote about it. Especially on Dirt, where it goes through the life of an addict, starting off and "everything feels great" to hitting the wall and being absolutely dependent. He wasn't glorifying this shit, it was a cry for help, but also a warning to others. I just hate that he was never able to break free from it all and still be around today.
Excellent stuff mate. It's interesting how the slight difference in our age shows here, for you hair metal was something you had affiliated yourself with that made grunge something to kick against. For me, hair metal had formed my taste in my early teens, so when grunge came along I was 18 and it offered that 'tribe' for me. Hope you continue this odyssey (check out the No Nirvana show, I promise), there are some great bands to discover.
He was not meditative but high on coke and heroin. An addiction he fought for 10 years and that ultimately killed him 6 years after this concert (which was the second to last concert of AIC)
The song is about how it would be better to be in a grave than alive. Down in a hole. Losing my soul. I'd like to fly but my wings have been so denied. Down in a hole and they put all the stones in their place. Etc

Actually this song was written by Jerry about his long time ex girlfriend Courtney who was 'the one' that got away so to speak.
