Don McLean is still great at 75! It’s the 50th anniversary of the song release in 1971! Also the anniversary of the plane crash of when the music died with the deaths of Buddy Holley, Richie Valens & J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson in 1959.
Don McLean was one of the best singer and song writers of his time. He wrote this as a tribute to 3 very famous guys, Buddy Holley, Richie Valens & J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson who died in a plane crash back in 1959. That was one of the saddest days in the music world, for sure. This song first premiered in 1971, and I still remember it like it was yesterday. Today he brings the song back with a new twist by doing it A Capella with the group called Home Free.
He sure didn't like Mick Jagger. 50 years ago the anniversary is in the Summer. I am learning the words, it's not easy. I am also writing a Music Essay on what the Lyrics mean. I've done quite a bit of research and who knows ?
Quite the production wasn't it? The whole thing, the voices, the background setting with quarantine/isolation still, the old pics on the sides. Don McClean wrote this and he is now 75. If you watch the background scenes of them making this you will hear him tell Darren Rust make me sound good, I don't have the voice I used to. Darren can bring out the best of anyone. I remember Lee Greenwood said the same thing to Darren and that he had made him sing higher and do more with his voice than he knew he could. Great team all these people that work with Home Free! What an honor that Don wanted HF to help him re-release this 50 year old classic we baby boomers especially identify with. I was stunned and even my stoic husband was near tears when they ended it the way they did. I loved it, knew others would. Yours if the first reaction I've seen today since it was released! I loved all the solos of course, but I felt Chance's voice absolutely fit this era and song perfectly. He killed it! Take care.
JUST AMAZING...the most iconic song of my generation. I was in 6th grade when this came out in Oct 1971. This day Feb 3rd, is the 62nd anniversary (1959) of the tragic day Ritchie Valens (known for among other songs La Bomba, Buddy Holly (known for That'll be the day - among others) & a world famous DJ, known as "The Big Bopper" were tragically killed in an airplane accident in Iowa, as they were on their way to concert I believe in Wisconsin. Their deaths sent shockwaves around to the millions of young people that were fans of the new "rock-n-roll" genre of music. Don McClean is a legend....a couple of his other songs you might have heard are, "Vincent" aka "Starry Starry night" a tribute to the late painter Vincent Van Gogh, and also a cover of "Crying" from originally Roy Orbison, and also Castles in the air, which I think is a cover but might his original.
and your reaction was GREAT, and yes this old geezer can recite every word of this amazing song...all 8 minutes of it LOL....it's the song of my generation
Am old enough to remember the original release of this song by Don McLean... omg this was incredible! What awesome memories that Home Free is making for us and themselves.. and they are so fortunate to be able to sing with such legendary singers. .. and so respectful of them! I have seen this video multiple times and enjoy it more each time.. Thanks for doing this!
Don McLean is the original writer and singer of American Pie and is 75 years old as of 1945. Another great song that he wrote and sung was a song named "Vincent". You might like it., It's about Vincent Van Gogh and his tragic life.
This one took me back in time. It was playing on the radio all the time when I was a teen. Don McLean sounded great and gave it authenticity. And Home Free- each lead amazing and beatbox holding it all together! Was great to see you in the chat!
That's a Grammy. FYI, the song is about WAY more than just the death of Buddy, Ritchie, and Bopper. It's about the death of a zeitgeist and the barren waste it left.
you know at their future concerts this is going to become a staple song....and the audience will sing along to it much like they do with Castle on the Hill
I read in a couple other comment sections that they may not do this one live because poor Adam nearly passed out doing this long, and consistently strenuous beatbox session. I didn't hear it myself, Just something I read.
Let's all take just a moment and realize what a gift the wonderously creative, amazingly talented gift that Home Free is to humanity...I'm happy to exist in the same century as these talented people live in....
I was 12 when this song originally came out! Don McLean wrote and performed it in 1971. This song, while honoring the deaths of Richie Valens, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper, It is sooo much more. The first line, “Bye Bye Miss American Pie”, I believe references the feeling of our country in the 50s and 60s where everything was “Mom and Apple Pie” - such an age of innocence for America! When those three young men were killed in the plane crash, our innocence got torn from us! I am sooo happy about Don’s collaboration with Home Free for the 50th anniversary of its first release❣️ I am a total Home Fry, but in all honesty, I think Home Free was THE perfect choice for this song 😊. It’s always been an upbeat song, but the lyrics are so sad!! Thank you sooo much for your reaction - it was truly heartfelt! Hopefully my comments will help you a little bit in understanding the song and why Don McLean wrote it. Peace and God bless ♥️
Home Free has earned their wings! They’re soaring into 2021!! Cool collaboration!! Finally a song that lasts more than 3 minutes!! Events mentioned from 50s, 60s & 70s showed there was turmoil in the US long ago. Beautiful job on this EPIC song!! Nice reaction!!
Wow - I'm chuffed to see you so genuinely happy doing this reaction. I think a part of it was that you had never seen the performance before so you were so into it and not only were genuinely amazed by what you were hearing, you seem happy to be where the music took you. Thank you for your reaction - glad to see music transport people. Go Home Free.
This song was all the rage when I was in High School, and one of the memories it brings back to me is , getting ready for my Junior/Senior Prom. I was a nervous wreck, and this song got me through. haha.
A tip of the hat and applause to Home Free. Not just for teaming with Don McLean on this iconic song, but for once again teaming with a singer who hasn't been a household name for a long time, and making so many (younger) people aware of them. This came out the year before I graduated, and has been one of my favorite songs since then.
Yay you made it to the Premiere! Its amazing! Happy 50th anniversary to American Pie. I was born 2 years later lol. I feel like we need this song right now
Great Reaction. This was my Era and my generation. I was a teenager in the 60's and played rock music with my own band. Many of our most famous rock stars were killed in an airplane crash,on their way to do a concert (THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED). It is good to see you younger artist honor the older artist and sing with them HOME FREE IS ALWAYS GREAT WITH ALL THEIR MUSIC. GOD BLESS YOU.
DON MCLEAN IS A SPECTACULAR SINGER/SONGWRITER. HE WROTE " AND, I LOVE YOU SO", ONE OF ELVIS' BEST LOVE SONGS. AND HE ALSO WROTE "STARRY, STARRY NIGHT". HE IS ONE OF THE LAST OF THE LAST GREAT GENERATION. AT 75 HE STILL SOUNDS JUST AS GOOD AS HE DID WHEN HE FIRST RECORDED IT!
On This Day back in 59 The chartered plane transporting musicians Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper goes down in an Iowa snowstorm, killing all four occupants on board. The tragedy is later termed "The Day the Music Died," popularized in Don McLean's song, "American Pie
This is the first time I've seen your reaction. Love how you are bouncing around and also how you don't stop the video every few seconds to talk about how much you like the harmonies, etc.
This was fantastic! Don McLean can still sing at 75! Goodness. And Home Free killed it again. Those harmonies and all the solos were great. Adam was superb. Another hit for the boys! Loved your reaction and I subscribed.
Don Mclean was your age when he wrote this. This song is an anthem of the fifties and sixties, and 'the day the music died" refers to the plane crash that killed Richie Valens, Buddy Holly, and The Big Bopper. ... Guy
I missed your name in the premiere chat, but glad you love it so much! And I agree all the guys did incredible, and Adam was even singing at the end! And yes Don McLean was the original artist in 1971. He has the same manager as Lee greenwood & after the success of their cover with him for God Bless the USA the manager suggested to Don that he redo the song with Home Free for the 50th anniversary. Austin has apparently tried suggesting doing this song to the guys over the years but they weren't as into it until this opportunity came about, and I think this was the perfect way to do the song! Great job, love it!
It was great to see you there yesterday, I'm just catching up on the reactions... Such a great performance had many of us dancing in our chairs, I think. It's actually getting played on the radio in the US, which is pretty incredible - loving seeing the guys getting to perform with artists like Don McLean.
I remember when this came out. I've heard it so many times I tired of listening to it. This collaboration has now made it one of my favourites. Don McLean sounds awesome. Hard to believe he can still hit those notes fifty years later.
And yet there's a complete instrumental section with no physical instruments. And you forget because Adam is such a beast! I never miss the actual instruments with Home Free. As a matter of fact, I usually like their versions better.
I really enjoy your reactions...so much energy and joy! I was in 2nd or 3rd grade when this originally came out but I didn’t really hear it until 1980, my freshman rear of college. That era (70’s-early 80’s) was so iconic in the music world...what great memories!
The context of the song and the age in Don McLean's voice add another layer of poignancy to the song. The lyrics are so deep and so many people didn't appreciate the actual meaning of them. I've read that the shadow box was Don McLean's idea and the pictures in it are ones that have meaning for him. One of the things I love about Home Free is the respect they pay to their collaborators. Don McLean asked how he should sing it and they told him whatever way he wanted - that they'd adapt to him.
The a cappella bass singers all have amazing ranges. Avi Kaplan has freaked quite a few people out with music releases after he left Pentatonix fairly high up there. Geoff Castelluci the same from Voiceplay. Tim though has the widest range of them all and has Chance now so he is not always stuck singing the bass line.
They released ...”WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN”...for Valentines Day...it’s quite amazing!!! Tomorrow they release...”I SWEAR” !!!!! Should be AWESOME ...as usual 💖💖. Thank You for your great reaction !!!
Fire fire fire... it was straight fire! Home Free did it again they brought back a song ,made it relevant and killed it. Don is 70 and still sounds amazing.
I finally was ready to watch this....I came to your channel for the first listen. Great reaction hun, check out the original...with Don McLean. He also did another good one...Vincent.

McLean wrote and performed American Pie in the mid 60s.
