I have this on the ps4 and i really love this game. Its a great all rounder but for game makers its a lesson is how explosions need to feel satisfying to the player.
I find that shmups in general have replay value for one reason or another (multiple ships to choose from, different endings, pattern memorization, achievements, etc.) because they’re not known to be super long and I’m cool with that. RPGs tend to fail in that regard in my opinion because to me length impacts replay value, the longer that game is, the less power I have in me to replay it. Beating those games once is good enough for me thank you. There will be times I replay RPGs but that is very very rare. But for shmups and fighters, I can come back to them anytime I want as I have those games in my weekend play schedule thanks to their short length and replayability.
My favorite shmup on the Dreamcast. I can't even really explain objectively why l love it so much. At first glance it may seem a bit drab, but, somehow, the more time you give it, the more it pulls you in.
I like this one. The Dreamcast was underused for vertical shmups. We have Ikaruga, Gunbird, Mars Matrix, GigaWing, Gunbird 2 has a lot of slowdown, Shikigami No Shiro II and the later games like Trizeal. Maybe the genre wasn't popular at the time. Certainly, we got some but I'd like more.
Awesome shmup! I also enjoy the soundtrack. BTW, seems like the updated HD version is coming to PC and Switch, as well as PS5 and XBOX Series this year. So good news.
This is one of my favorite shmups, TBH… I have this and the final SEGA licensed Dreamcast game (Karous), both purchased new from Play-Asia IIRC, and I’m glad I bought both. One thing I will say is that the HD ports that were released on PS3/Xbox360 really elevate the shooting rotation feature, as it lends well to the widescreen format change that was made for the HD version. Whether the format change lends well to the original design concept is another story, haha!
I own it for my Dreamcast, incredible game and the best Grev game. Hard as heck, excellent mech/character design, the weapon system is so fun and prevents you from just holding A all the time. Looks insanely good for Dreamcast too! A glimpse of what the console's graphics could looks like if only Sega didn't cut support ;_; There will be a remaster btw, with a new OST apparently :) definitive buy for me. thanks for covering this game VGE!
Like with Gradius V, I want to beat this one before I die. It’s one of my bucket games. Even beating the two games on the lowest difficulty setting will be enough to satisfy me.
I own it in the ps3 and just got the Naomi gd from a seller in Greece. The Naomi gd rom had sine amazing titles: psyvariar 2, border down, under defeat and ikaruga (I still don’t have this gd yet) are all stand outs. Great channel btw :)
I have original Dreamcast copies of all those games, save for Border Down. The only reason I didn't get it was because it cost $150 at the time... In retrospect, I should have made the sacrifice, lol. NO worries, I have a "backup".
I also heard this game along with Mamorukun Curse will be getting rereleased on modern hardware next year. Still hoping City Connection gets Saidaioujou.
I have this on the Xbox 360 (would like it on Dreamcast but has become sadly expensive). Great game with its own feel. Has a sense of oomph! You’re right about the hit box though, can be difficult to judge. Been a while so will defo fire this up soon, as I plan on going on the 360 shop to see if there’s anything worth snapping up before it closes.
Noice, another great Dreamcast game that's largely 60fps (with brief slowdowns on big splosions and such like every good shmup) that you misrepresent and ruin with badly emulated 30fps recordings like the vast majority of your Dreamcast videos. Good job.
Hehe, I don't think you're playing on the English team here. The ladies' uniforms and german speaking radio communication make it pretty clear that you're fighting on the axis side...in an alternate timeline though;-)
I played the HD port on PS3 and loved it. A criminally underlooked game, almost no journalist gave it coverage apart to say Rising Star Games was publishing it. One problem with your video though boss, you're playing as the German-speaking characters, the enemies are the ones who speak in English (they say stuff during the raid on the harbor in 1-2 before the battleship launches, it's a bit hard to hear but it's there) Something that stood out to me is how depressing the story was (I know, "story" in a shmup lol, I'm weird). It's implied that after all you went through, your characters just die offscreen and the peace talks finish and none of it mattered. I noticed that a lot with shmups from that era, after each stage clear you get these glimpses of a larger plot (in Under Defeat it's photos of the characters) but not really much to go on, it gives the impression there's this detailed story that we barely know, and a lot of it is depressing. Cave shooters do that a lot, Karous did it (which iirc was the actual last official Dreamcast game?). Is it just me or did you ever notice that?
It looks like two German like nations are at war. Some time ago, it was translated, so You can better understand the story. I think this game got the best-looking explosions on Dreamcast, they are so full of different details, smoke, fire, random junk.
I never look at intro too long so I am not sure what story was about. I always play it for explosions and destruction of those massive vehicles and structures.@VideoGameEsoterica
Even Xbox is getting them. Raiden 3 and 4 got physical Xbox releases. I used to have HD on PS3 and loved it. I have a CD-R on Dreamcast I labeled Under the Feet 😂
This is probably my favorite shmup on the Dreamcast and I’m glad I have a copy. The explosion and smoke effects are a real showpiece for the hardware
It’s a very pleasing game visually
Shmups are underrated in general. Wish I was better at playing them. This one looks like a hidden gem!
Just keep practicing. You’ll get better :)
I have this on the ps4 and i really love this game. Its a great all rounder but for game makers its a lesson is how explosions need to feel satisfying to the player.
The explosions def pack a punch
Tremendous title, almost unlimited replay value.
It’s def a top tier game

I hear that. I don’t replay many RPGs. Chrono Trigger I’ll replay every like five years or so
My favorite shmup on the Dreamcast. I can't even really explain objectively why l love it so much. At first glance it may seem a bit drab, but, somehow, the more time you give it, the more it pulls you in.
Makes sense to me :) it’s a classic

KyuKyuoku Tiger/Twin Cobra is coming soon on MISTer, I saw.
@simon41978 I’m happy to see all these shmup ports in the last few years
Awesome shmup! I also enjoy the soundtrack. BTW, seems like the updated HD version is coming to PC and Switch, as well as PS5 and XBOX Series this year. So good news.
So many shmup ports coming soon. Love to see it

Def not an easy game haha
Never played it on Dreamcast, only Xbox 360. Co-op shmups are so fun!
360 version is a great port
Like with Gradius V, I want to beat this one before I die. It’s one of my bucket games. Even beating the two games on the lowest difficulty setting will be enough to satisfy me.
It is a satisfying moment when you beat a shmup that’s been giving you trouble
Oh my! Now I want to play this VGE. What a fun looking game. 8^)
Anthony..
Def play it

Yes NAOMI is stacked with great titles
I have original Dreamcast copies of all those games, save for Border Down. The only reason I didn't get it was because it cost $150 at the time... In retrospect, I should have made the sacrifice, lol. NO worries, I have a "backup".
Haha it’s gone up in price a TINY bit
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yep - just a little cautionary tale to anyone else who ever thinks that “it will go down in price one day”… 😛
I love the shmups! I'm terrible at them, but they are so fun to pickup and play.
You don’t have to be good to have fun :)
I also heard this game along with Mamorukun Curse will be getting rereleased on modern hardware next year. Still hoping City Connection gets Saidaioujou.
played Under Defeat on a Dreamcast and have it for xbox 360 with soundtrack cd. love it
It’s a classic for sure
I need to play this one! Never got around to it, but I love me some shmups!
I heard it’s releasing in Wisconsin next year
Huzzah! 🎉

It’s gotten super expensive. Sadly all things Dreamcast have lately
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah that’s so true, unfortunately😟

it has some controversies if i remember correctly
Never heard that

I never played this probably because you said it was a very late release on the Dreamcast , looks pretty good though
The time to play it is now!
Yeah, it was released when the console was kinda officially dead for at least a couple of years. Not to me though, haha.
Had been dead for like 4 years or so
Aren't you actually fighting the Allies in this game? Given the chatter is all in German? Awesome game though. Love it ^_^
Perhaps 🤷🏻♂️
have you ever covered Strania?
I haven’t
This game smells like Valkyria Chronicles
But what smell is that? Lol
this kind of reminds me of the 80s shooter Twin Eagle
Haven’t played that one in forever
@@VideoGameEsoterica
digitized rock music and cool explosions
Under Defeat it's great!, I like to play the HD on PS3
HD is a good time
How come this game got a re-release, but not Border Down?
Probably a rights issue
BD was excellent as well!
Another classic for sure
@@astreakaito5625 Indeed.
Not a great fan of the genre but stylistically, this has a feel that might inspire a play.
Give it a shot!
Does this game work with the dreamcast analog stick? Iirc it's dpad only and it dampered my enjoyment of it.
I think it’s just d pad. I usually play on NAOMI though

You can still get this on the original xbox 360 in HD!!
Yep :) it’s basically everywhere
Great game similar to zero gunner games
Very similar
I think this is getting another "on everything" reissue
I've never gotten far but this is superior to Borderdown.
Lotta shmup rereleases lately
