    Great overview, Isabella. A lot of us know about holy week and things being shut down at certain times. It's nice to have a bit more background. Do you know why some places are closed and others remain open? I can't seem to get an answer about this. It seems many people will not work because they are afraid something bad will happen to them. What of those that are working? Are they not having these concerns? Most Filipinos are very superstitious.

    • @julie.g
      @julie.g 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Others remain open because it's an opportunity that some establishments are closed, there are schedules though they might be closed on Maundy Thursday, a half day on Good Friday and totally closed on Black Saturday. But some would really open all through out Holy Week especially restaurants because this time is also like a vacation a lot of people are roaming around. It's the first time I've heard that something bad will happen if you keep working during Holy Week. There's no work because it's a legal holiday and it's red in the calendar, there's no such thing as something bad will happen.

    • @DrDlane
      @DrDlane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@julie.g my friend had workers that wouldn't even take double pay. They said they didn't want anything bad to happen. So it's definitely a thing.

    • @julie.g
      @julie.g 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DrDlane it's the first time I've heard of that. In my region, we don't. So, basically in their area.

    • @DrDlane
      @DrDlane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@julie.g I don't know what region you are in, but my friend is in negros Oriental. But I also spoke to folks in Butuan City and near Iloilo and they told me the same thing. Their workers refused to work even for extra pay because they were afraid something bad would happen to them or they would get hurt while working. They were very serious about it apparently.

    • @julie.g
      @julie.g 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DrDlane what's the nature of your friend's business? If I may ask. I've been to Negros Oriental and typically it depends on the person. It's interesting to know that because I've never really heard it with people I've talked to before not until now, thank you.

    Very nice and informative video as usual. You're off to a great start Isabella, look forward to more videos, and more topics. Now that you've covered the Holy Week, maybe you can do something on the opposite side, Atheism. Would Filipino's be accepting of an Atheist or would they avoid them and not want to talk to them? What do they think about Atheists?

    I have another video idea for you.
    I would love to see a series of videos very much like this one, with each one showcasing an important holiday in the philippines, whether national or even just regional.
    that would give the expats and the tourists and idea of what they should be expecting if they end up in the country during a certain time period.
    all of these videos would be grouped together under the holiday heading or whatnot, which would make them very easy to find on your channel for someone trying to figure out what time of year they want to come.
    it would also be cool to do a slightly longer video based on the calendar. literally put up a graphic of a calendar, month by month, and highlight all of the holidays that the Philippines observes and offer a brief explanation of what will change on that holiday.
    will Banks be closed? government offices? everything? will things be closed for the first half of the day but not the second half? will things be closed starting at dusk on a certain day even though they were open during the day?
    will everyone and their dog have closed up shop and be at home spending time with their families, such as on Christmas eve, which will make it very difficult for a tourist to find transportation from the airport or to go out and get a meal or things of that nature?
    are there certain holidays that are specific to the philippines, such as an independence day or something like that, that no one else in the world would think of celebrating because it is specific to the philippines, but where they shut the whole country down to celebrate their independence?
    are there any holidays where some country, such as the USA or spain, is blamed for some atrocity and gringos probably shouldn't venture out on those days?
    I am currently residing in panama, and due to various USA interventions, there are two holidays each year that I call the "kill gringo" days. both holidays commemorate Panamanian lives that were lost due to us government intervention, and I make it a point to not leave the house on those days because those are days where people are already upset.
    it may seem like a small thing, especially if you're a Philippines resident, but these are the sort of things that would be good for a tourist to know what they are walking into.

      @@Isabella-ky8kx -- I am a virtual treasure trove of good ideas.

      Legal Holidays can be Local or National. If the calendar is red, banks are close. If it's a local holiday depending which area you are, it depends on the bank if they'll stay open.
      We also observe other religious holidays like Eid al-Fitr. When September starts, that's the start of the Christmas season.
      Independence Day here is different from your 4th of July. It's like a normal day. The National and Local Governments might hold programs but there's no such celebration like a feast or anything. It's just like a normal day, I know a few years ago they spend Independence in a different way.

    Isabella, you neglected to mention the colourful annual pageant in Boac, Marinduque Province, named “Moriones Festival “ where men dressed as roman soldiers complete with papier mache masks walk around the town brandishing their “swords” during Holy Week. These Moriones then stage a chase of Longinus on Easter morning to kill him. Longinus was the last centurion to see Jesus Christ before He died on the Cross. It’s a wonderful experience to behold, for savvy expats and locals alike.

    Fasting and abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday is NOT a tradition of the Church. It is one of the precepts (aka ‘Commandments) of the Church (“To fast and abstain on days appointed” or “Observe days of fasting and abstinence”). See the Catechism of the Catholic Church #2043.

    hey Evan,
    you grew up in Chicago so you are used to the USA holiday system. does anywhere in the Philippines celebrate Halloween the way they do in the usa? either with kids dressing up and going door-to-door to get treats or, in my case, with adults dressing up and going out and partying?

    • @julie.g
      @julie.g 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are costume Halloween parties but it really depends. But there are no trick or treating. No knocking on doors. You watch horror movies with your family and friends.
