The matches now are less "intense" because their gameplay is essentially down pat, just making small adjustments and improvements now. Nationals is just around the corner. Hold on to your socks!
(sorry about my english) I totally agree with Carson,i love haikyuu and a big part of it was the directing,my biggest problem with this season is not even the change of the art style (i kinda like the new style) nor the drop in quality of the animation because the first season also wasn't the best animated thing of the world, but what made me fell connected with this show is how the directing made me feel like i was whatching the best version of this anime, but this season feels diferent (if i'm not wrong the director changed in this last season) because the choice of shots, the time they stay in the screen, how to cut to another shot without breaking the momentum,or how to break the flow intentionally so they can start a new scene with a diferrent focus,i feel like all of those things aren't done as masterfully as the 3 other seasons, even the OST feel like is less impactful even though(if i'm not mistaken) it's the same guy that always made the OST.
In my opinion and the overall rating/reviews, the story, characters, and intensity were even better in the big battle of the fourth season - very emotionally charged. However, yes! Especially in a certain set of episodes some scenes are... the worst 😅 I hope you focus on the great animation moments and the story itself, and not let those bad moments ruin the fun. Thank you for reacting!
*Kinda spoiler warning* Just want to talk about the "drop in quality" and the information I'm about to produce has not been proof checked and is just from stuff that I've heard about TL;DR: Art style was changed to better match the manga & most people refer to the post mid season break as the point for the dip in quality for the art style and animation. Usually when I talk to people about the "drop in quality" most people bring up about the art style and that's what I'm gonna talk about the most. A lot of people will notice how the art style has changed from the first three seasons then to the fourth, as the first three felt more... "realistic"(?) as it had more sharp lines and angles, but then in the fourth season it feels a lot softer. This was deliberate as the animator said they wanted to change the style to better match the manga. As the first few seasons, the style was slightly different to the manga, in order to give it more impact and make the characters more grounded. Best displayed with Hinata's hair, as the original style had it more flat and could see the curls and folds more distinctly within the hair while now it's more cartoony(?) as his hair is more spiked(outstretched? spread out?) and the centre is more of a solid kind of colour. I believe the meaning in this change in direction was that the action scenes later on within the story just lend better towards this art style. Furthermore, this more "cartoony" or soft art style I believe helps in expressions and the fourth season get very emotional. Additionally, the other thing people bring up about the "drop in quality" is the animation and when most people refer to is the few episodes released post mid season break. This was very noticeable by many people as it felt face proportions were off, certain scenes were missing a few frames and that certain pieces of the scene just weren't animated. This is due, you guessed it, Covid. After the mid season break in order for the team to get back on schedule quickly they outsourced a few episodes to another studio, who just didn't really seem up to the task or didn't care that much (not sure which is worse). But anyway that's all I wanted to say on the topic. Sorry for the word dump.
This part of the season is bound to be underwhelming in anime perspective, because we are educated to expect higher and higher stakes / villains, but in sports you have long moments of... nothing interesting, basically. We saw that many times, but after that big season 3 we now notice that more. In manga perspective you'd notice this difference way less
Carson, you hit the nail on the head about the quality of this season - sure, the art style is different, but what affected my experience the most was the cuts, edits, small changes in direction - all these subtle things that you never realized you noticed until they were different this season. I think these "jagged" ways of cutting or timing everything just feels off and is what I miss from previous seasons. Still very watchable, just slightly distracting if you're aware of it.
This season is simultaneously my favorite and least favorite season. It has one of my favorite matches in all of Haikyu, but the animation, the directing, and even the art at some points just are not as good as they used to be. I hope they do better for season 5 tho :/
This is the reason why nishinoya and hinata didn't invited on all japan youth training camp. Nishinoya lacks on overhand pass and positioning after receiving so every spiker can approach. For Hinata case there is Hoshiumi who is also a little giant.
I'm a Japanese Haikyu fan. The changes in the art style of the Anime Four Seasons are due to major changes in the design of the original manga and the influence of Corona. In particular, I think the four seasons are a change due to the appointment of a female director. It is rumored among fans that the four seasons are made for the purpose of receiving female fans because the popularity of women in the original manga was conspicuous.

and of course is a directorial choice. a friendly match can't be as exciting as a prefecture final lol

6:04 well you can't blame the VA (for doing Shigaraki and Mereum) so tsukki has a evil tone
4:31 even the subtitles said Carson to concentrate

Yeah, the matches are a little bit less intense, but they make up for it on the big game this season imo
