I just finished this book. As I was reading it, I said to myself, "If you did a mash-up of THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME (Mark Haddon), A MAN CALLED OVE (Fredrick Backman), and ROOM (Emma Donoghue), you'd get STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND." And those three books should not go together! But here we are. STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND is indeed a page-turner, but it is very dark and f*cked up. It is funny; it has a wonderful sense of community; and it is deeply disturbing. However, you are right...trigger warning to anyone who cannot read about violence toward women and children. If that describes you, do not read this book. Yet there are many places in the story where I heartily laughed, which just made for a very unsettling reading experience. You think to yourself, "Is it healthy I am laughing during this super-dark novel?"
Also, I don't know if you saw the movie version of RUNNING WITH SCISSORS (the book, by Augusten Burroughs, is one of my favorites), but I kept picturing the narcissistic & eccentric doctor in that movie (as played by actor Brian Cox) as Sally's father while reading STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND.
Oh, I agree! 😄 I also laughed several times while reading and yes, that feels a little weird 😅 And I’ll definitely check the movie you mentioned, thanks for the recommendation! ❤
Okay, I’ve watched two and a half minutes and I am hooked! I have to stop the video to avoid spoilers and rush to read the book now!
Let’s meet after you finish reading it 😁❤️

The ending is a liitle different in american version, with a bit more hope
Are there different versions? 😮 I didn’t know! I should check it 😅out
The ending nearly makes everything pointless for me, and I don't like it.
Totally agree! The ending broke my heart into pieces 💔
