25 Years From Discovery To Cure: The Hepatitis C Story | Nezam Afdhal | TEDxOxford

- The discovery of the hepatitis C virus in 1989 and 25 years of has led to new treatments that can now cure almost all patients with hepatitis C and have the ability to reach almost 200 million people globally. Dr. Afdhal discusses how discovery of the virus lead to understanding the global epidemiology and modes of spread of hepatitis C and the recognition that it was the commonest cause of cirrhosis, liver cancer and need for liver transplantation. The development of model systems to look at viral replication led to treatments initially with injectable interferon with low cure rates and poor patient tolerability to new all oral direct acting anti-viral agents which can cure patients with a simple, safe and effective 8 - 12 week treatment. Finally Dr. Afdhal discusses how these treatments have changed the discussion in the US on the cost of new medications and the ongoing plans to bring these expensive treatments to developing countries with high hepatitis C burden.
Nezam H. Afdhal, MD, is a Senior Physician at the Liver Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He is also Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Afdhal received his MD degree in 1981 from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and did fellowship training at University College Dublin and at Boston University School of Medicine. He is the Chief Medical Officer of Spring Bank Pharmaceuticals.
Dr. Afdhal’s clinical expertise focuses on the management of the complications of liver disease, including cirrhosis and portal hypertension. His research has been on liver fibrosis, hepatitis B and C where he has led national and international teams on the treatment and cure of HCV and HBV. He is currently working on issues of global access and education for HCV in the developing world.

This is for me one of the best videos offering background information, overall picture of the amazing struggle to discover the new Hep C drugs. Fascinating and taught me so much when I was diagnosed 10 years after blood transfusion and was overwhelmed by fear and ignorance.

I have Hep C. I was only recently diagnosed and I am told that it is in a passive state. No one can say how long I have had it, but I would guess many years. Tomorrow I will go to a clinic in Vienna, Austria and, if approved, I will begin the treatment. My house Physician told me that the treatment would cost about 50 thousand Euros. That is a hell of a lot of money and I could never afford to pay for it. BUT, I live in Austria and we have one of the best national health plans in the world. I will pay nothing. This is awesome! I'm forever indebted to you Dr. Afdhal and to all the doctors/researchers/nurses who focused part of their career on this and patients who donated time and consented to drig studies in the name of a cure, everyone who contributed to this work and to this true wonder cure, and thanks to my government for negotiating with those greedy pharma companies so they could give this treatment fully covered to their citizens. They figured it out so we didn't have to go bankrupt ourselves getting cured.
And if none of this had happened I'd probably be close or in the middle of liver cancer/liver failure... IOW dying, in my early 30s.

He did, the compound name is Sofosbuvir.
Sold as Sovaldi for a very high price and also Soforal as generic drug in developing countries.
It's real. I did the therapy and I'm hepatitis free. Three pills per day for 8 _(12 for some)_ months and you're cured with a 99% possibility.
There's a few different cures now, all relatively the same (pill-form, once.a day, little to no sidd effects, 95%+ cure rate) but a doctor giving you a referral to a hepatologist will get you there. Theyre.nit OTC though

I just read a comment it says thank God I'm in Canada my treatment was free what about me I live in United States I'm not wanted to be free but I can't afford it to be $150,000
I think its gone down to $80,000 or so. Theres different meds now too. Honestly if you need to I guarantee you should be able to find generics produced in India for a sane price. The pricing was really a insurmountable problem fom 2014 to 2019. Go look for generics of the drugs. Best of luck friend
As a sidenote i cant believe you're dying of a curable disease and the only thing in your way is cost yet you still cling to private health care. To each their own. The canadian gov negotiated a deal and worked to distribute it for free to citizens... since Ibwas signed up with this govetnment clinic they covered it 100%.
But, yeah i'd search for generics in your situation.

Sadly this is only a cure for hepatitis c and won't work for hepatitis b. If you have only had the infection for a short period of time then your body may naturally fight off the virus (within a couple of months) but if the infection is chronic then there are some antiviral therapies which can help slow down the virus and prevent liver damage.
