Tara, thank you for your note - this is the biggest compliment ever and means a lot to me. I love, love, love the "how" but I absolutely adore understanding the "why" and love that it comes through! Thanks again for your note and happy quilting!!
I love this idea, however, I like bigger quilts (unless for a baby). I never understand why people are concerned with direction of fabric (especially on a square quilt) - it can be tossed and turned anyway and the fabric always looks good if you allow it to be random (at least in my opinion).
This was my first Liz tutorial. I love your relaxed, personable, stuff-happens vibe. I'm helping my church replenish its supply of baby quilts to give to new little ones in our congregation, and this two-at-a-time is very helpful!
THANK YOU for showing how to trim the half sq triangle block with a regular ruler! I couldn’t afford the specialty trimmers that Jenny and Misty use and was just using my mat as a guide. So my trimmed blocks were never quite square and went together wonky. As a result I quit making anything that had half sq triangle blocks. You’ve opened a whole new world of quilt top designs for me!!
Hi Padfoot! I totally get it - I never used to square at all, and then when I tried using my mat, well, it didn't really square up either. I hear ya. I'm so glad this helped you out! Our regular rulers can do a lot of tricks! Thank you for your note and happy quilting!!
I make and donate quilts so this is an awesome thing for me! Thank you! I have made several of the original carpenters stars but I have a new great granddaughter coming this year so I can make one for our baby and one for the donation blessing quilt as I call them!
I agree, Liz is an awesome teacher and so calm! I use this pattern in the large size to make wedding quilts for my grandchildren (we're up to 26), but like most quilters I have lots of charm and mini charm packs and this mini version of the Carpenter's Star is perfect. Thank you Liz for the tutorial.
Liz, you are genius! I am making a duplicate twin bed quilt right now, but finished the first one before starting the second, and the second one is not nearly as fun! Genius to do two at a time! Love your tutorials, your attention to detail, and your sense of humor! “Future me will thank past me for what past me took time to do “ 😂Awesome and so true! Thank you for another great tutorial and idea!!!
Kimberly, I totally get it! I used to make them one at a time and the second one is usually less fun, especially back-to-back, but when I make them simultaneously, I really love them! Also, future you is so excited to see what you make! You are awesome!
Amen Liz.....i have all kinds of friends... my sewing friends "know me".. i'm the "finished is better than perfect" and mistakes are "creative opportunities".... Love this!!!
I watch MSQC videos-----and order from them---all the time, and this is my first time with "Liz" and I am impressed. She is clear and very good with explanations. And, very accepting of "not perfect.". I hope to see more of her videos.
Thank you so much. Liz is an amazing teacher. She made it seem so simple and showed you when you could "fiddle" and how to do it (e.g. scant seam a bit too scant? No worries). Your company employs so much talent and I am so glad that we are able to share in it.
This is the first time I have watched a "Liz" tutorial! Great job of explaining all those little things that help us be more efficient in our sewing/quilting. I will definitely use your suggestion of making 2 at a time. Right now I'm working on quilts that will be donated as I have a big stash that needs my attention. And this one will work great with all those Charms for that scrappy look!
Love this idea. I used a layer cake and cut it in fourths. I ended up making five baby quilts at one time. It was great, because I had two friends that were having babies, one was having twins. I kept the fourth quilt for myself and used it as a wall hanging and the fifth quilt I donated for a church auction. It was a very effective way to make several quilts at one time without having to continually think about getting the layout correct.
From you, I have finally learned what I needed about the diagonal seam tape(placement). No one has ever shown that and I have been frustrated for a long time. When I make two Carpenter Star Quilts at a time, I will keep one for me, and put the other one in a mystery box for a friend. Thank you so much! Hugs!
Hugs, Debra! I am so glad to take frustration out of it! I love the diagonal seam tape - and like you, I found placement tricky at first. Once I got that nailed, it's one of my fave tools!
I love watching your tutorials because you show us when lines and squares don't line up or measure right. You show us what to do about it. It's nice watching tutorials when things aren't always perfect. Thank you. 😊
Millie, thanks for your note!! Trouble(shooting) is my middle name. Well, maybe it's just trouble. :) Glad the tips help! I really appreciate your comment!
I made two-at-a-time baby quilts for twins. The borders, bindings and backings were slightly different so the twins could always tell them apart without reading the labels. I don’t like making the same quilt twice sequentially, so doing them simultaneously is a terrific idea.
Mrs. McDonald, me too! I find I want to make 2 but don't have as much fun on the second one, especially if back-to-back so I started doing them simultaneously and it genuinely keeps me more organized, which surprised and delighted me. haha! I hope you enjoy it, too!
Love this concept of making 2 quilts at a time and these tips are phenomenal for doing it. I’m working on 3 different projects right now. But I’m definitely trying this…because I think it will be fast and so productive.
Thank You Liz com another Liz. This made so much sense to me. I’m new to quilting but not new to sewing so explaining how to use the ruler to square the triangles was a great help. Enjoy ALL the MSQ tutorials!
Liz, you are as good as a teacher as you were filming, I appreciate the way you explain exactly what you are doing and why. Great tutorial, and yes two at a time will give me an extra quilt to share with someone. Thanks again.
I love this tutorial!! Please make more of them. You are such a good teacher. After Jenny and Natalie, you are one of the top 3 I could listen to forever. I really do hope that Missouri Star takes advantage of thee great resource they have in you.
I truly appreciated and enjoyed the time and effort to go back to the basics and explain the how's and the why's in this tutorial. As a new quilter, it's nice to have the basics refreshed. Great job Liz! I loved your tips on squaring the puces using the bigger template and what to do about when things are too small to square! You did a super job!
This is my year to clear out a lot of my stash. I have tons of 5 in squares. I will do this several times as I hope to donate to the home for young, unwed mothers to be & unwed mothers
Liz I love your tutorials! This one is a great idea. You are a very good teacher and especially like your explanations and you have a very pleasing voice to listen to. Missouri Star is the best!! You rank right up there gal. ❤
Sorry adding another comment. ❤ the idea of doing 2 quilts have a step daughter in UK who asked for something to put up in window which reminds us of Jesus. So at christmas time this will be ready to send to her in bleak cold Uk while i am in hot sunny South Africa! Thanks again!❤
Thank you so much. Needed a quick baby quilt, and the father to be is a carpenter. Perfect! and it went together like a dream. Really appreciate your help.
This was such a great tutorial! I am a great aunt to twins (boy and girl) who are coming up on their first birthday. Mama like neutral colors, think beige, beige and more beige…lol. This idea will make it sooooo easy to make two at once that will suit both Gemma and Teddy!
Thank you, Liz. I have 2 green and peach rose charm packs with green stripe for the borders. I have an upcoming baby shower for one, and will keep the second one until some family member wants it.
I love the idea of stacking the blocks. If you stacked piles of four, you could use those as the four quadrants of one quilt, or stack eight and have four quadrants of two quilts. Such possibilities! Thank you.
Hi Liz! So good to see you 😊😊 Hmmm, let's see just how many Charm Packs DO I have??? 🤣🤣 I got to come to a retreat there last August & the Carpenter's Star was one of the choices to make. Many in the group made it including my traveling friend. I chose to make the Trick or Treat wall hanging! I loved seeing all of their tops being made & their fabric choices. I've wanted to make one in a smaller size, but now I may have to make 2!!!
I have used half square triangles for doll quilts for a organization that gives children Christmas gifts. This perfect for that! Thank you! Have a great day! 🐝🐝🐝🐝🌻🌻🌻🌻
Liz, you're my favorite! I wish you'd do more tutorials!! I've only made a couple "two at a time" quilts. It all depends on the pattern for me. I did a herringbone that way. I have the Carpenter Star pattern already. I can definitely whip two of these quilts up in no time. Thank you!
Thanks, Linda! That was a happy accident the first time I did it and I absolutely loved the bonus benefit to that method - I feel so calm and organized this way! Thank you for your comment!
This is the first “Liz “ tutorial I have watched. Loved it. And, when I do Two at a time, they will go to sister, daughter, sister-in-law, and me. Or, as an auction item for my nonprofit library. Thank you for this tutorial.
Liz I loved your tiny carpenters star- I think they will be so easy to make 4 or 8 for placemats using this stacking method. thanks for being so informative in your descriptions. I love your pace of going over the quilt - you really take your time to show and explain so we get it the first time thru. great tutorial. Hope we see you making more tutorials. Teri G
That's amazing, two tops in one go. I like to make small square table topper for our big dinning table in the kitchen. One end is always with a tt, flowers and decoration, because we are only three anymore we don't need the whole lot of table. I think with the right fabric choice it would make wonderful tt's for every season and pretty gifts for family and friends. Thank you for sharing the idea with the different sizes. Love from Germany 🥰
@@lizgubernatis2075 Hi Liz, thank you for your kind words. I'm a teacher from the German Patchwork Guild and in patchwork over 28 years. I love to try new technics and I really love, love disappearing pattern. I sewed Jenny's Terrace quilt in February and it's now at a quilting service in Dresden, sorry, to send it to MSQC is to expensive, unfortunately 🥴 many greetings 🥰
I love your tutorials ty for sharing this. Because if you I made my first set of curtains thanks to your help a few months back. I truly appreciate you
Carpenter stars are a favorite of mine, I like that the center of the star has a lot of different options depending on how you lay it out. I haven’t tried a 2.5” one yet tho. Liz, I LOVE your calming voice, your tutorials are the best. MORE LIZ!😍
I’m making 2 at a time, one for my sewing room and one for a friend. Thank you, your directions are wonderfully described. I have made a Carpenter’s Quilt before and ready to make 2 this time
I will DEFINATELY be making this 2 at a time 5 inch square quilt as I have many daily deal packs squirreled away that need using! I may also try the 2 inch to “challenge” myself! Thank you for this eye opening tutorial!
I love 💕 your shortcut in laying out the quadrants. This method would work with any block that has 4 quadrants. You only have to lay it out twice for 'two at a time' then put your halves together. Genius, plus having the handout. I thoroughly enjoy your tutorials. You always bring such fresh and clever ideas to any pattern. Thank you for this
Liz is awesome! I loved this tutorial and plan to make this pattern for myself and donate the second quilt to a charity silent auction. I would love to see more tutorials showing other sizes of Jenny’s large quilts! ❤❤❤
Liz get's it - Solve Future me problems! And I really wanted a smaller version of a Carpenter's Square for some table toppers so this is perfect. Thanks, Liz!
Thank you Liz! I enjoy making smaller quilts so this will be great! Also loved the tip about what to do if your hst block is a little smaller than the rest! ❤
Thank YOU! That's usually my problem (oops!) sometimes my seams are a little "generous" and I need to compensate later by making them "scanter" - but it all works out! Finished is better than perfect!
I love the idea of 2 at a time baby quilts! I’m going to use charm packs I have on hand. One will go to a couple that will be having a baby boy soon and I’ll donate the other one to Pregnancy Lifeline in Texas to a Mom that saw the ultrasound of her baby and decided not to have an abortion.
Great job, Liz! I did a baby quilt with this pattern about 5 years ago! It turned out great! I have never done two at a time quilts., but sometimes I have wished there was one for me, too! Thanks for the idea and the super tutorial!
Love this video- thank you for explaining how to do two at a time. You really helped me know it’s ok if my square is a little small. That’s an area I’ve struggled.
Darlene, thanks for your note! Struggle no more! You're totally fine - and it'll get easier the more you do - I know we always say that in videos but it really will - and the truth is, most of the time, if you stay consistent, it doesn't have to be perfect - just perfectly yours. Sometimes, my seam allowance is a little "generous" and most of my squares are too small. Then I find the smallest one and trim everything down to that size. In the end, maybe my quilt's a little smaller than the pattern, but the person snuggled under it will never know or care. Happy Quilting!!
Liz, great tutorial. I am in the process of reorganizing and decorating my sewing room and want to make a few mini quilts to hang. Brilliant idea to make two at a time as I can give one as a gift for a cute table square. Thank you for all the tips. I will be making a five inch square one so I can use some of the charm squares I have already.
I love when Liz does a tutorial. She does great explaining the “why”. 😊

Hello 👋 how are you doing today?
Love this idea. I fall in love with my quilts/fabric and don't want to give them up! This is perfect. I may try the smaller charm quilts.
Great job!! Thanks!
I will be making this quilt two at a time! I have two friends expecting grand daughters so this is perfect! Thank you!
This is a great idea to make one and donate one all at the same time! I have this pattern and can’t wait to make it in a 5” size (x2 of course) ❤
This is good to know , you are a good teacher !
Great job, Liz! I did a baby quilt with this pattern about 5 years ago! It turned out great! I have never done two at a time quilts., but sometimes I have wished there was one for me, too! Thanks for the idea and the super tutorial!
Nice job Liz!
Great job 👏. Love the quilt
Love this video- thank you for explaining how to do two at a time. You really helped me know it’s ok if my square is a little small. That’s an area I’ve struggled.
Me too! Thank you. ❤️
Will definitely make 2 At a time. Love Liz’s tutorials
Hello 👋 how are you doing today??
Liz, great tutorial. I am in the process of reorganizing and decorating my sewing room and want to make a few mini quilts to hang. Brilliant idea to make two at a time as I can give one as a gift for a cute table square. Thank you for all the tips. I will be making a five inch square one so I can use some of the charm squares I have already.
Will definitely be using this idea Liz. Love your teaching, so calm! Thanks. Hope to see you again soon.
