Work Title: Symphony No.3, S.3; K.1A3, 'The Camp Meeting'
Instrumentation: Flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, 2 horns, trombone, bells, and strings (violins, violas, cellos, and double basses).
Performers: James Sinclair (conductor), Royal Northern Sinfonia (chamber orchestra)

    13:51 - III. "Communion" - Largo
Symphony No.3 by Charles Ives (1874-1954) was written between 1908 and 1910. In 1947, the symphony was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Ives is reported to have given half the money to Lou Harrison, who conducted the premiere.
This symphony is notable for its use of a chamber orchestra, rather than the complete orchestra Ives used for his other symphonies. The symphony is also very short, lasting approximately twenty minutes.
The symphony has many influences including War songs, dances, and general European classical music. It evokes country meetings during his childhood, when people gathered in fields to sing, preach, and listen. Ives was sentimentally nostalgic, glancing back as a modern composer at a nineteenth-century childhood of hymns, bells, and children's games throughout the three movements. The symphony is filled with complex harmonies and meters.
Although there is no conclusive evidence that Ives and Gustav Mahler ever met, Mahler had seen the manuscript and talked of premiering the symphony with the New York Philharmonic. There is also a story, which Ives put about, that Mahler took the score back to Europe, planning to conduct it there. Mahler's death in 1911 prevented any such performances, and the alleged score has never been located.
There was no further interest in the symphony until Lou Harrison, a great fan of Ives' music, finally conducted it in New York on 5 April 1946. Bernard Herrmann, another composer who became a friend of Ives, conducted a CBS broadcast performance of the symphony soon after.

The score shown here does not contain the dissonant "shadow lines" that Sinclair incorporated into this recording (those "wrong" notes you hear near the end of the first movement). According to Sinclair, Ives initially removed the "shadow lines" from his sketches, but later asked that they be restored. Apparently, this never happened as the published score doesn't contain them. Sinclair decided to put them back in. For comparison, listen to Bernstein's NYPO recording; he used the published score without the dissonant lines. Thank you Pentameron for uploading this.

There exists a score with the shadow lines now.

A grand work. One hear the influence of Brahms and Bruckner and Reger perhaps, but it is unmistakably turned into Ives. One of the better performances I have heard. Thank you for sharing.

Ives builds his innovations from traditional American themes, folklore and traditions, here the "camp meeting". The orchestra is rather reduced: woodwinds by 1, 2 horns, one trombone.

I can see why he would call the award he got for this a 'badge of mediocrity,' most of the rest of what he wrote is so much better than this, this is disappointing to listen to after listening to his other works.
