As a woman married 31 years, I hear this song as a woman whose husband has passed away and she's sitting on a bench at Coney Island and wishing she had told her husband more that she loved and appreciated him. It's about regret and love and marriage. It's one of the most powerful narratives I've heard sung. Amazes me that someone as young as her can write this song.

i hear it as something similar :) i once read a beautiful story about 2 lovers in the 1960s and one of them passed away. they were both men and spent their time together in hiding. just like you said, it’s about regret and all of the words left unsaid, all of the things they didn’t get to do. one of the most memorable moments in the story was their day at the beach, which i kind of connect to coney island

I know and it frustrates me. This is the ONLY song on Evermore whose ranking hasn't changed in my opinion. It was number 1 when I first heard it, three months down the line after NUMEROUS listening sessions, it's still number 1. This song is beautiful. It deserves better.

Notice how Coney island' is essentially a busy and hectic place, bustling with activity and crowds of people. However, here, it's a piece of barren, neglected land with a single rundown Ferris wheel. Describing the impact of the relationship and/or memories on the lovers. Personifying Coney island to the state of the lovers, how it changes from content to loneliness.
to add to that, she says we were like the mall before the internet, it was the one place to be. like she's still stuck in the mall while the world has moved on to the internet- similar to her sitting in the formerly exciting, brimming with energy place that is now deserted despite the old appeal of it

Taylor is actually a songwriting genius. The way she managed to mention all of her exes in a song so beautiful is just amazing. Too polite to leave me- Tom, did I shatter you- Taylor Lautner, Birthday cake- jake, grey skies- John, not thanking him when she was on the podium- Calvin( my favourite line in the song), accident- Harry. Also I feel like sorry for not winning you an arcade ring and in the tree line by the gold clock are about Joe Jonas and Conor Kennedy. Definitely one of her best pen games and probably one of the best songs on evermore.

IDK, it sounds like she's referencing her mother, who was with her always. Maybe she didn't appreciate her back then, but now reflects on the past and realizes she could've recognized mom more.

@Marina Kanan im not a swiftie either, but the fact many people could "make a fuss" is that they learnt to jump into Taylor's perspective to see the world through the very lyrics she wrote from folklore, now that world extended evermore. Plus, Taylor is playing easter eggs on her songs, connecting them into a massive universe, weaving a world of emotions that could paint moments of our lives and they hit some (well, many people) when they have the right mind for it.
So if you can not understand about "the fuss", then its okay. Its just that you dont play the game and simply not in the right mindset she created from folklore. 😁
@Marina Kanan needless to say she has amazing storytelling skills and a way of describing universal feelings from different point of views that everyone can relate to in a different level, and her voice is normal not out of this world either but she is passionate and it shows,she connects with her audience

this is genuinely my favorite song by taylor.
i’ve been a fan for two years and coney island is 100% the song i always return to and feel like is the first time i listen to it.
i know this is a featuring but i think this is one of her most personal songs.
she wrote this one for the people who hurt her and never said sorry to her so she wrote an apology for herself, the music is so calming and peaceful and their voices fits PERFECTLY together.
the incredible bridge takes me in another planet and that’s what music should always do, she does this with every single song but this one feels just special for me.
it looks like an old taylor’s perspective but at the same time so mature and grown-up, that makes me feel like she had to grow fast for a lot of things and she realizes that just now, whatever, you can feel this song in a lot of ways but all of them are going to make sense and feel personal even if they are subjective.

Not only the BEST song of the album, but one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
Taylor's songwriting has gone through the roof in the last few years. Without going too overboard, she's been compared to Leonard Cohen in basic lyrical structure. Now let's be clear, Cohen is still from another plane of existence, but damn.
I guess now that she's 31 she's lived long enough to accumulate sufficient layers of experience. It's the next ten years that really pack them on, so when she's 40...who knows.

The way she used Coney Island as a metaphor, the lyric "I'm on a bench in Coney Island wondering where did my baby go" alone says everything, a relationship that was bright and full of life is now barren. Ugh this song is a lyrical master piece like most of her songs are, shes truly amazing.
