I am old enough to remember the “grand old station” My Father worked at Penn station for the Penn RR from the 1940’s until he retired. Thanks for the memories.

Know what I remember about Penn Station? Rows upon rows of phone booths, dozens and dozens of them, almost always occupied with travelers. They started out as wooden closets with a folding door and a seat! Eventually morphed into walls of pay phones with a small metal divider between them. And then they started to disappear as people began carrying their own devices. There used to be pay phones on every street corner and sometimes halfway down the block. Remember the pullover plazas on the Southern State Parkway (among other parkways) where you could pull up to a phone and reach it from your driver's seat?

The difference in atmosphere and aesthetic between rat maze-like Penn Station and Beaux-Arts beauty Grand Central is staggering! What a shame greed and disregard for the past led to the old station's demolition in the 1960s.

The underground world in NYC is amazing!!! That Acela Amtrak train is completely new to me just like so much of what I’m seeing from your asking tours. Thank you for the memories of old neighborhoods AND for introducing me to the new. Please stay safe as the Holidays approach and ppl get desperate for money.

By time got to New York City as a kid in my 20's ,Old Penn Station was long gone. So it was so enjoyed to take a wonderful walk and hear your very good narrated. Myself, I love to walk and see all what is new and old about a place called home for sometime in 1970's and Penn Station was apart of it and now to looks so outstanding too see. As I walk with you, I hear the magic of many voices and enjoy the sound as much as the trains and hitting to the tracks As I always say people make the world go around and friends make it so much more fun and beautiful. Action in a moment, can be a friendships of places like Penn Station with open arms of New York City waiting, to smile of a good friends ... KID ... Bless Your Heart. ...

I remember taking trains from Penn Sta. to Philly Pa to the Army/Navy Football game. It was a lot grittier and dirty back then, but without the "homeless" people hanging around. Took the train to DC once for New Years.(No Acela train then...) Also attended classes at Penn Plaza. There was a great donuts/coffee shop downstairs. Back in the day that entire "rotunda area" was for ticket sales. You purchased tickets from a human. There were no retail shops there. That entire complex has morphed into a retail menagerie. I'm surprised so many of them are still in business.

Once again loved this video of Penn Station. What an awesome building. I think I would get hopelessly lost here! Totally agree with your comments on the homeless encounter. We get that here in Scotland too and you are right, nobody deserves to be shamed or bullied into making a contribution. I am a passionate advocate of authorities and others providing resources to try and eradicate the scourge of homelessness but individuals don’t need to chastised, especially as a bog percentage probably make a contribution in their own way. Good luck to you.

If NY wasn't so expensive it would be a great place to live everything is right there for you. You don't have to drive 20 miles to get to a train station and if you don't have time to eat at home you can get food at the station some train and bus stations are dirty and very unsafe. Thanks so much for sharing.

Susie Q Penn station is not nice it’s a crap hole basement in the middle of a first world city. It’s cleaner and safer than it has been in the past but it is nothing compared to the palace that once stood in its place in the days of yore. In the days of old, in a time long long ago there was once a grand pen station that was magnificent you felt like a god when you entered and now you only feel like a peasant.

Nice vid. Oh and you pronounce it more or less like "pret a manjay". Its actually a play on words of "pret a porter" which is a style of fashion that translate to "ready to wear" and in the store's case of course "ready to eat".

Thanks for the nice walk around, Actionkid...I would just add that Hotel Pennsylvania, although situated perfectly close and convenient to shopping and transportation, has sketchy ratings. From tripadvisor "The hotel is huge (1800 rooms) but with 12 elevators you won't wait long. However the hotel is old and desperately in need of renovation. Things didn't work or work well - for instance, desk lights, the hot tap went backwards, the carpet was full of dust the windows hadn't been washed for decades. Being close to Penn Station is a plus." There are better hotel options nearby.
Keep up the great work Actionkid, and continued success.

I have nice memories of the old Penn station. The new one has been around since the mid- late 1960's. I remember the transportation police would poke the homeless who fell asleep in a chair in the LIRR waiting room. It's just a very sad situation that these homeless people cannot be helped. But then again, many do not want help. Thanks, AK. I was hoping you would do a Penn Station video.

I have taken the train to NY twice, and taken it back three times, via Amtrak, from California arriving into Penn Station. In my experience, the real long line you commented on is probably for the coach seats on an Amtrak train. Do you know when and/or why they converted the post office into an above ground entrance? And why did you say it is great to stay at the Hotel Pennsylvania?

    • @ActionKid
      @ActionKid  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The conversion of the post office first started in 2010. The Hotel Pennsylvania has great architecture, but their online reviews mention poor experiences with stays there. It was originally operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad.

**the original Penn Station was a architectural gem. It was a great loss to the city.
**the replacement station with MSG overhead is a disaster us design for a world class RR station. Compared to other major RR stations in the US and World, it is an embarrassment
** the station is literally an underground rat maze. Easy to get lost, crowded, and stuffy. An unpleasant experience.
** between NJ and NYC, there are only two tracks built in tunnels dating back t the early 1900s. The is a desperate need for a new tunnel and additional lines. However, over the last 10 years funding has been held up due to political stalemates.
** The videos show improvements underway with the new LIRR entrance. Also, NJT entrance improvements at tracks 4-8
** the lower levels show much of the original station. Brass railing, copper clad doors and marble facades remain of the once grand Penn Station.

ActionKid posts some nice videos, except there's this thing called "research." Too many narratives are replete with "I think" and "I guess." IMO these videos would be better if they'd provide solid historical information. In the case of Penn, there are tours that show all the vestiges of the old Penn Station. It would be great if someone did a video of that!

The videos would definitely be better with more research! I try to do some but I don’t put enough time into as I should. Most of the time I feel it’s not worth the time investment to cover.
