    In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to To Tame a Land by Iron Maiden. Unfortunately, I don't have much knowledge about Dune (the source material on which this song is based). But, I still thought it was one of IM's more thoughtfully crafted songs that I've heard...with interesting harmonic shifts, great vocals, and great guitars as always!

    I know for sure you'd love Maiden's 'Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.' A masterclass in atmosphere, emotion and storytelling. "The Duelists" is another stunning example of Maiden's ability to tell stories that are not only dramatic, but also human, immediate and full of paradox and ambiguity. It's both about the futility of a duelists refusal to admit defeat and an ode to the bravery that leads him down his doomed path. Another great one is 'Brave New World'; the song puts you right into the shoes of the so-called "Savage" and the alienation and overwhelmingly loneliness he feels in the 'Brave New World.'

      Fair play, we all have our own personal tastes.
      I prefer older Maiden or their more melodic music. A lot of their more recent stuff that gets a bit too heavy can sound a bit of a mess to me.
      Maiden were a lot stronger with Martin Birch as their producer, their music had more clarity & melody then. Under Kevin Shirley a lot of their music to me can just sound too heavy & congested. Everybody to their own though.

    I implore you to do the Ozzy Osborne song “Dairy of a Madman.” His guitarist at the time, Randy Rhoads, was a classically trained guitarist and teacher. This is considered some of Ozzy’s best work. Unfortunately, Randy died in a planet crash in 1982.

    • @ThibautKurt23
      @ThibautKurt23 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yes and Diary Of a Madman intro is inspired by a guitar study (study number 6) by cuban composer Leo Brouwer that Randy was teaching. Ozzy came one day apparently and heard Randy playing this with one of his students and asked him if it was a new song he composed. Bob Daisley said that when he gave the lyrics to Ozzy and he heard them rehearse Ozzy explained "I will not sing this, I am not Franck Fucking Zappa", since the verse section was really strange for him rythmically.

    I´m surprised no one has commented on Dune itself. Doug, if you ever read one science fiction book in your life, it has to be Dune. It is elegantly crafted and the way the ideas on gobernance, ethics and religion are display throughout the novel (the whole series, actually) rivals, in my opinion, War and Peace. Hi Doug. My father is a classical composer (Doctorate) and pianist (Masters) and I'm a guitar player. I bought Piece of Mind on album once, on cassette 3 times and CD twice. There are many stories of theft and loss, etc. but the fact is all you need to know. This album is their Quadraphenia, a masterpiece cover to cover! The Trooper, Flight of Icarus, To Tame a Land and others have held the title of my favorite track, but it's currently Sun and Steel. There's a power and conviction in Bruce's voice that is unique. Listen to this album!!

    Interesting side note about this song: Steve Harris wrote it after reading "Dune" by Frank Herbert. The song was going to be called "Dune" until Mr. Herbert found out about it. Frank Herbert apparently hated rock & roll bands, & he threatened to sue Iron Maiden & stop the Piece Of Mind album from coming out if they released the track with that title. So the song had to re-titled as "To Tame A Land."

    Another great video Doug, I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan and I recently found your TH-cam channel, I've been enjoying all of your content. As for Bruce's highest singing note, I think it's at the end of "where eagle dare", from the "piece of mind" album, where he hits a D5 and then goes to an E5 in full voice, the same note can be heard at the end of "childen of the damned", but I prefer the first one. If we count screaming or falsetto notes I think the highest note is in "gangland" where it goes up to B5, there are also a couple of short highs A in that song.
    As for Bruce's highest singing note from the 2000s and 2010s, I think we can find it in "the legacy" where in the chorus he belts a short E5, he can no longer sustain a high note, he mainly restricts to b4.

    One of my favourite unsung Maiden songs - thank you!
    This whole album has an amazingly murky, articulate quality about it which really makes it stand out in it’s individuality - to me it sounds like a concept album; Seventh Son‘s crooked older cousin.
    The mix & tone of the album blends really nicely with the introduction of Nico and shows a marked maturity in song writing after the blistering Number of the Beast. Derek Riggs‘ art work on the gate fold sleeve, just captured it all beautifully and tied it up in a nice bow.

It is the name given to members of a royal family containing Pelops, Atreus (hence the name), Agamemnon and Menelaus of Iliad fame, his son Orestes, ifigeneia and Electra. Their tragic stories were used by Greek poets and playwriters like Homer and Aeschylus.
