Holy shit, the memories are flooding back on this one. A lot of these viruses used to be available in neutered form (they'd run their visual payload but not the actual file infecting process) from this old german site called virus-museum, I had a bunch of 'em back in middle school. Looks like the archive.org frontend isn't exactly running in prime condition, some of these are supposed to run differently to how they appear. For instance, "Spanska" is supposed to scroll over the land faster than that and "Girls" is supposed to play a PC Speaker rendition of "Yesterday" by The Beatles instead of whatever mess you just heard lol
Ive noticed that a lot of these old viruses are pretty much demos which attach themselves to files and/or damage your computer. Those of you who are interested in the visual effects in these viruses should look up the demoscene. It’s pretty amazing what people can do with these old computers.
Fortran stands for "Formula Translator", if i recall some things still use it. Most likely files only around for compatibility or because replacing them is more effort than its worth
Some people will be surprised to hear that FORTRAN is still used today and has been consistently updated for over 6 decades. It is used in all types of scientific computing applications. With the last update being used for parallel computing for large super computer centers.

I think Redcode was a reference to the old videogame Core War: "Core War is a 1984 programming game created by D. G. Jones and A. K. Dewdney in which two or more battle programs (called "warriors") compete for control of a virtual computer. These battle programs are written in an abstract assembly language called Redcode. " .. "At the beginning of a game, each battle program is loaded into memory at a random location, after which each program executes one instruction in turn. The goal of the game is to cause the processes of opposing programs to terminate (which happens if they execute an invalid instruction), leaving the victorious program in sole possession of the machine. Virtualbox? DOSbox? Weakings. I actually installed DOS on a flash drive and can just stick it into a computer and boot _that_ as my C drive. You'd actually be surprised, all things considered, just how well it works. Of course, you probably won't be able to get any sound beyond the built-in buzzer unless you have an old sound card and a computer that's actually capable of having something that old plugged into it. Other than that it's all the command-line, fighting with conventional memory goodness you'd expect. In fact, modern RAM still conforms to the XMS standard and should thus be mappable by drivers and programs which support it.
"let's program a virus" was the "let's have a band" or "let's have a magazine" for assembly language programmers. "scientific american" started it, by the way, in 1983 or something. the article that inspired a generation was even written by douglas hofstadter, if i remember correctly. there is an excellent article in wired, which captures the essence of the pastime very well: www.wired.com/1995/02/viruses/ in the 80s it was all fun and games for nerds who wanted to show off. the kgb did some lazy-ass research into sneaking evil commands into ansi-terminals and that was about how much spy agencies and criminals were concerned.

It was fairly easy to get rid of, you just had to edit autoexec.bat and delete its launching path, than boot and delete the infected file so it won't re-activate the next time when someone runs it. The carrier file was a stupid mini-game, can't remember what it was called. As it didn't do anything else I'm not 100% sure it was really a virus, more likely a prank that spread much further than intended.
