  • Lester Freamon and Jimmy McNulty are two sides of the same coin. Yin and Yang. They are two of the best in the BPD but sometimes find themselves at odds with each other, but when they team up, they are a nearly unstoppable force.
Find out why these two men are so successful and able to influence major events throughout the course of the entire series!

This leadership series is excellent. Frank Sobokta may not be the sexiest choice for an analysis but he’s more conflicted and complex than people assume at face value. Way underrated character.

Frank is my favorite character, perhaps because he is the most like a Greek tragic hero. He's one of the most selfless characters on the show; he truly believes in his union and port as being key to the rebirth of his home. A nostalgic dream that becomes a nightmare, but his attention to the union also leads him to neglect Ziggy, with tragic consequences for Ziggy as well. Frank is truly horrified by the deaths of the girls in the can and to learn that humans were being smuggled through his port, but he is shown to spread any of that ill-gotten money around through political gifts and union beneficence, such as at the bar with envelopes of cash going to furloughed workers. They only show it once, but we know from the ensuing exchange that Frank regularly does this. Among all the wonderful characters, this stood out through all the seasons as different, and more tragic in a way. The death of Frank proves the deathknell to the port's dredging and expansion, as well, and the port, and Frank's union guys are among the homeless in season 6. Sort of like the sins of the king bringing down judgment upon the whole kingdom. Carcetti, Marlo, Barksdale, none of them see such a wake of destruction behind them. Barksdale's organization dissolves, but that's merely a vacuum filled by Marlo, and that will be filled by someone else, and someone else, and so on.

Very thankful you did this analysis! These are two of the most intriguing characters on the entire series in a show full of them.
I always wondered whether McNulty would eventually become like Freamon. You get the sense that Freamon was a bit more like McNulty when he was younger, and that McNulty starts to realize what Freamon has been telling him by the end.
I particularly like this dynamic because a trend in the show is that some characters take the roles of others. The people change, the world remains the same. Michael becomes like Omar after Omar dies. Dukie becomes like Bubbles. Carver becomes like Colvin. Randy becomes like Bodie. Slim Charles becomes like Avon Barksdale. Heck, even Carcetti becomes like Clarence Royce.

YES YOU'RE BACK! Thank you for these amazing character analysis, and lessons in leadership as you call it. If you're interested in doing other shows, since I noticed you did The Sopranos too, maybe something down the line to make videos on if you don't have that many more characters to talk to, I would highly recommend The Shield, a fellow cop show (well not that The Wire really is a cop show), which its amazing characters and dynamics would really fit for a videos like these. I think it would be fascinating as we see how many characters move through different positions, the manipulation, corruption, and workplace loyalty ignoring the corruption because of results, etc.

McNulty despite all his flaws was actually what a real cop was supposed to be in how he handled the neighborhood kids like D and Bodie. He actually took the time to learn the game they were playing and it even led HIM down a rabbit hole he got too engulfed in to the point he found himself in a Batman/Joker tango with Stringer Bell. McNulty didn’t need informants like Keema and the others because he knew the people he was dealing with. THAT is true police. Policing the community isn’t just about locking people up and McNulty grows to understand that.

What a subpar analysis of these characters. Let me start off by saying that comparing whatever crap office work that you do to police work is both self-serving and lacking of perspective. The idiosyncrasies of bureaucratic government work is lost to someone that has never been involved in this sort of environment, including the types of people that will work there in the first place, which you clearly show have no clue what you're talking about.
Second, the fact that you completely omit Season 4 and how these characters grow in that season to arrive to Season 5 tells me that to compile this analysis, you HAD to omit that Season because it went against your narrative. Hell, you omit how Santangelo's situation influences Jimmy into how he can REFORM himself, which he does for... SEASON 4.
I hate that TH-cam keeps suggesting this channel. You sound like you're twelve while trying to sound 25 years more experienced in things you know nothing about, or shoehorn into trying to fit into your corporate survival skills.

macNulty would be right to think his boss can't solve cases without him, Rawls didn't even want to take the dead smuggled girls in the container, and he and most other authorities or cops didn't care about it. McNulty is the one who goes after it and solves the cases
