I am glad Ani has a baby; she is the kind of person we need raising new people if we're going to have a chance of having a loving, hopeful, accepting future. Thanks for posting this!!!
Ani your always remembered. Great guitarist, elequent and fun lyricist, sweet and charming. I’ll always love you and your talent sister. Stay awesome. Love you girl
god im loving this!! im sitting here really.. awed.. that once again she managed to say something important, in such a good way, with such skill and craft with words, and such a personal voice. i hear it and i feel greatful..
Ani DiFranco rocks my world. she's one of my all time favorite musician and somehow i missed her when she came to Portland... urgh! I'm sure she's a killer on stage... i'm loving this unplugged jam!
Well, I will have to back off a bit and listen to your side. I have been criticising the Ani DiFranco phenomenon at my peril for a few months now here on youtube, and you are the first defender to have something interesting to say about the matter. My hat is off to you and Touche!!
It's not just about aging. We go through much as women, throughout our lives. Especially when you decide to have a child. I know the change I went through after I had my daughter, and then again after I had my son. It is age, and love, and the creation of life. One person cannot be angry forever. This song is just as powerful as any of her others. It is just the message that is different!
i love the way her fingers move. They put me into a trance...haha. I just sit here completely engrossed in her fingers and almost lulled to sleep with the song
@helliot826 - she has one hand manicured because in order to hit the chords and make them ring out correctly, she must have full contact; fingertips pressed to guitar frets. The hand she's plucking/strumming with...I'm sure she uses the nails as a pick. :o) Hope that helps.
Uh, when do you think she had a facelift? I'd verify your source A lot of people feel insecure of their appearance.. when it doesn't match the standard societal definition of "beauty." You grow into your own. Among many other things, I love ani for her candor.
Another powerful reminder from Ms. DiFranco that everyone eventually has to grow up and gets older. And if you span her catalog you'll will find very little happy Ani. It is great to see a woman who has endured so much and feels such sorrow virtually glowing as she sings and tells a folk story of alove and abond she has formed. She has talk me to take a stance speak out and "Face Up and Sing!" Let's join her folks...positive activism equal good karma. RBR rocks!
Well thank you for that piece of information -even though you should know that a slash between two words generally indicates either/or; not that the words are synoymous. But I am glad to know that "Bi" means that a person is both a Nard-Gargler and a Carpet-Muncher; Thank you for clarifiying this fine point of Human sexuality for me.
@erinlay i play guitar with no pick..a few layers of strengthener and strong nails to begin with and you're good. also, after so many years depending on your finger or thumb positioning and you build up a serious callus that can be felt, but not usually seen unless you look for it.
i agree, she has a cute manicure, but i doubt it's the first time. she's not THAT punker than thou that she'd never let a friend manicure her nails over the years, given that she's always played with fake nails. i bet it still puts a smirk on her face to get a "pretty" nail job. what a lovely performance! so much better than the version on record.
hehe theres a certain irony with this being a song beauty being so many different things, and the comments bout the apperance of her fingernails :D i kinda love it tho, its making me crack up :)
@helliot826 , yeah, in concert she actually uses electrical tape around the fake nails to keep them on. Pretty awesome style of playing, wish I could do it that way!! I'm a strummer all the way :)
Well, Informalist, you may not see the beauty in the lyric, and that's fine. But I think it's because you're missing out on a level of understanding... As a fellow aging woman, I think I understand what Ani means by "Love is all over the place, There's nothing wrong with your face." And it's really quite poignant and reassuring.
Who gives a crap about her fingernails. Real fans would realize that her nail preference is ridiculous. Thank you ani for all of your beautiful inspiring lyrics and songs.
Her guitar is made by Alvarez. It's her signature model. D'Adario makes strings. She said that she had finally let go of the angst which permeated her work prior to becoming a mother. Songs like this one reflect her outlook on life, which according to her is much happier these days. I think this is a beautiful lyric & melody. Informatist, you're entitled to your own opinion, which I completely disagree with.
Every self-made artist who writes the kind of songs she does has those harpies howling at their feet. It's a primitive human trait to find a link to define their own existence(and/or choices) and to give them meaning. What she does and what they do with her are their own choice and you shouldn't gainsay it as harshly as you did. I've been to her concerts, yes, they are filled with those "devotees" you mentioned, but not a one of them were as you describe them. They have a hero, not a God.
This woman is an amazing talent as well as an icon for women everywhere and all you people can discuss is her damn fingernails???!!!!REALLY?Get back on the short bus!If you actually knew what talent was for real rather than what MTV told you to like this week, you would have more substance.Don't just hear Ani-LISTEN!!!
look, being a mom doesn't mean you're the stereotypical "soccer mom". She supports the gay/lesbian community, but that doesn't mean she's required to be one to support them. They understand her and they're proud for the strength she has to stand up to arrogant people like you.
her one hand is manicured b/c she uses those nails as finger pics. Instead of wearing external pics, she just gets her nails bolstered with acrilic, i'd guess. it's what I do!!
Arrogant? Arrogant? This poor woman cannot even cut her hair, or change her clothes, or make a "Lifestyle Choice" without legions of Harpies howling at her like she was a victim on the Jerry Springer show. The Arrogance of the average Ani DiFranco fan is stunning. I think that Miss Di Franco is hooking up with more "commercial avenues" so she can distance herself from her grasping, controlling devotees, who are certain that she is singing "Just for Me".
No.1: TH-cam posts are not mandated to be lavish praise only. No.2: The fact that you are a "painter" and proud of your feelings about your personal friend "Ani" = A Brimming Bowl Full of Jack Squat. No.3: You don't know how long I have been listening to this dreck and it's spawn. No.4: Did the millenium actually mark anything of real significance? No.5: My concern about cultural standards that are blindly accepted is only about love, not hate. No.6: Every utterance is a personal opinion.
Dude. She's got fake nails on one hand. She always uses fake nails in place of a pic. It's just that in concert she puts electrical tape around each one to make sure they don't pop off.

Ani DiFranco rocks my world. she's one of my all time favorite musician and somehow i missed her when she came to Portland... urgh! I'm sure she's a killer on stage... i'm loving this unplugged jam!

Ani is Awesome! my muse xxxxxxxx

Exquisite.

That's cool. I was wondering if she had a TH-cam account where you can talk to her, but apparently not.
@helliot826 She uses acrylics on her right hand...when she plays a show, she uses electrical tape to keep them in place
@erinlay i play guitar with no pick..a few layers of strengthener and strong nails to begin with and you're good. also, after so many years depending on your finger or thumb positioning and you build up a serious callus that can be felt, but not usually seen unless you look for it.

she looks good in the mother's clothes. this song makes me think of my own little child. love....
I want that guitar!

Oh my gosh, I wish Ani Difranco was my mother. (Love you mom!!)

G R A C E ! That's what my name means (Nancy) I'll pretend this song is for me.
Is there anyway I can contact Ani and talk to her on TH-cam? She is one of my 1000+ heroes and idols in the Universe! =)
@mummsybummsy Male guitarist put fake nails on for that reason. it protects the actually nail and avoids using a pick
Anyone know the name of this song? She is brilliant!
@rainese What does that mean? I have Asperger's and I have no idea what terms like that mean unless explained literally.
she's lovely! Ani, I don't agree with you politically, but I love near about everything else about you :)
It's called "Present/Infant."
Who gives a crap about her fingernails. Real fans would realize that her nail preference is ridiculous. Thank you ani for all of your beautiful inspiring lyrics and songs.

And they say women don't think outside their box...
