It feels like they took inspiration from Kirby with they created this and that they really want to makes things fun for powers and not go a more traditional route.

It still is traditional Mario just more new ideas. Still Bowser shows up, ruins the fun, Mario has to go chase him down and beat him, go through the same structure of worlds, desert, forest, cloudy area, grassland, lava place, so on. (Not saying it in a bad way) It's still very much the Mario formula, was just time to get creative again. Like from 64 to Sunshine to Galaxy to 3D World, or like from 3 To New Super Mario Bros so on.
