This movie was absolutely breathtaking. I went to see it the night it came out and when it was over, I was left with this incredibly overwhelming feeling of uncertainty. The pacing was slow but that's what the movie is all about, a ghost observing life around him moving on while being unable to move on himself. Highly recommend it. The soundtrack is amazing too.
*One of the saddest movies ever existed. You literally feel empty inside during whole journey and there is no fulfillment afterwards, just more emptiness and sadness.*
No fulfillment? I completely disagree. The entire film is him clinging to this house, not letting it go nor moving on, for hundreds of years, starting to repeat the same cycle again. _That_ is sad. But at the end, when he finally lets go, that's a relief, the cord being cut. I thought that was plenty fulfillment, tbh.
Hello. Hi. I'm waiting for someone. Who? I don't remember. …… I don't think they're coming. The dialogue in silence between two loney souls is so haunting.
It's a great movie. You have to sit through Rooney Mara eating a pie for 10 minutes straight but even that has a profound meaning that makes it worth it.
This is one of the best movies ever made. And that ten minutes (which is really barely five minutes) of Rooney Mara eating pie with C staring at her in hopelessness is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in all of cinema.

@@intense79nick yea, people nowadays just have really small attention spans, I'm gonna watch this movie tonight, I've recently became addicted to A24 movies
I’m a guy, I love this movie. My wife, she hated it. She went out for a walk halfway through the pie eating scene saying it was ridiculous. I wondered why. I have experienced very painful loss, while my wife has not. I cared for my Mom as she died of cancer for a year, my childhood best friend of 30 years died of cancer at age 43, a close friend/co-worker was murdered and now my Dad is soon to pass as he’s in hospice with dementia. Loss is life changing. I still grieve the loss of my Mother years later and my friend more recently. But now, I’m a Dad to a wonderful little boy. And I cannot imagine him feeling that pain someday when I die. We are as close as father and son could possibly be, I swear sometimes we are two bodies sharing the same soul, he is a piece of me. So I watched this thinking about being on both sides of that grief. I would absolutely be Ghost C, standing by my son, watching, and grieving alongside him. For some, this movie was abysmal. They absolutely hated it. For others, like me, it was profound and struck something very deeply..
I’m with the crowd that loved it. This film hit me hard, and it seems to feel a little different each time I watch it. In some ways, I feel like it’s age. The way our perception of time changes as we get older. When you’re a kid you just want summer vacation or Christmas or your birthday, and it always takes forever for those days to get here. When you’re older, you look in the mirror like, “WTF happened?! I was just waiting for summer vacation yesterday!” I was holding my Grandma Dot’s left hand when I heard her last breath leave her at 1:41pm on April 13, 2003. I remember it like it was yesterday. It’s like a minute and a million years ago at the same time. I’ve experienced a lot of loss, too. My grandma and grandpa, who I grew up with. My dear friends Joe and Georgi, who were like parents to me. My friend David, who was a Cherokee elder who taught me so many beautiful things. The dogs! Gus, Clancy, Hugo, Eddie, Millah, Truman, Hunter, Mugsy, Chaplin, Dilly, and Ninja. My cats Willow and Fezzik. And even just simple change is death, in a way… I don’t have anyone to remember me. I hope I don’t wander when I die. A few years ago I started writing about my life, the people and animals I’ve met, the stories they told me, things we did, things I did, places I saw, everything. My house is filled with memories, with things they gave me or that remind me of them. There’s a story for each piece, all written down. I don’t have anyone to tell those stories to, no one to pass them on, but I like to imagine that when I die, the person who goes through my life will do so with curiosity and mindfulness and time. I want those people and things to matter, and maybe they’ll be passed down by someone who wondered. I feel so lucky that I actually knew! I like to walk around antique stores and vintage shops. I like to imagine the history. Who wore this dress? Was she funny? Smart? What about that hat? The man that put it on his head? Did he have strong hands? What children played with these toys? The food prepared in those pots and served on those dishes? On and on and on. Will someone do that with my stuff when I’m gone? I’m here now, imagining it, but where will it all end? How will people know that beautiful young woman with the dog in that old photograph was my Great-Grandma Trixie? Born in the 19th century, yet I knew her, and I’m here in the 21st century and not even 50 years old yet… Time. And we do want to endure. You seem to have an open mind and a huge heart, and your son will carry that forever… ❤️ Yep. This movie hits soooooo deep… 😭
I feel for you since I experienced the same loss from both my parents, best friends dying so young. I have a beautiful son 21 and daughter 15. I think this film was sad, beautiful and amazing bringing the reality of life and the universe. Love is eternal!

This movie... I remember watching this movie by chance. It was one of the options for free movies on an airplane. Movies I would typically never watch. But it was there. So I did. And man.. I don’t think any movie has ever left me feeling so depressed, empty yet introspective. Everything in this world is temporary. Including us. Time just keeps going. All these fleeting moments that we don’t appreciate until they’re gone. They don’t seem important until we can no longer get those moments back. And one day, it will all be gone. One day I will be completely forgotten. And so will you. Does any of it even matter? Or is that just all the more reason to live in the moment. And appreciate the things we have. To love the people closest to us. Make the most out of everything. Because someday, it will all be gone.
I'm actually energized by this film. In fact, astronomy can make a person feel crestfallen as well as purposeless but in reality, astronomy actually excites and thrills me. It's awesome that we are Lilliputians on a tiny speck of dust in this virtually infinite universe and yet we can figure it all out through inquiry and empiricism. This is why I've always loved science and astronomy in particular. We don't have a purpose from a grand, cosmic perspective but the purpose to keep on living and of life in general is the exploration of oneself and to discover what drives you to want to see tomorrow. A job can do that. Your purpose to life is what you give it. It's not written in the sky. You are the author of your own life, so to speak. My rating of A Ghost Story: A+.
I agree. Have you seen the trailer for It Comes At Night? It's also an A24 picture and if the movie is only half as intense as the trailer is, it'll definitely be one of their better movies. It draws you into the movie, without giving anything away. It's one of the best trailers I've seen in a long time. The trailer for A Ghost Story is great, too.
the ending of this movie had me sobbing. im not really sure why, and the feelings this movie left me with i cant explain either. casey's character gave me heavy feels of hopelessness and sadness throughout the film, and seeing his life loop around again and then him reading the note and vanishing.. i dont know. i just cried.
The color handling is pretty mediocre, to be honest. And I'm not talking about the frame not being full of vivid colors (saturation or else), it's just everything looks gray, dull and boring due to bad color grading decisions.
This is one of the most profound, haunting, ethereal, philosophical and breathtaking films I've ever seen. A Ghost Story was one of my most anticipated films of the year and it has surpassed my expectations immensely. If I see a better film this year I will be absolutely stunned. What elevates this film from a great one to an extraordinary one is because it completely (and I mean completely) transcends it's genre. It shows time and love in a completely original and utterly spellbinding way, through the theme of eternal connection. If it's available in a cinema near you, seek it out immediately. David Lowery has crafted a modern-day masterpiece.
I absolutely love this movie. I was a little unsure and disappointed at first. The pie scene was brutal getting through. But showed real time. Which is important to the film. I think it's best watched alone with no interruptions. Magnificent movie.
This came out the year I lost my husband very suddenly. While it ripped what was left of me to pieces, it also had a universal truth to it that made it beautiful, and made me feel less alone.
If you look at the films they've made on IMDb, they really aren't. You only ever hear about their better movies, but they produce their fare share of mediocre crap.
This movie transforms reality into the surreal. I really enjoyed it's atmospheric tone, and square framed motif. The long cuts intertwine perfectly with the soundtracks whimsical yet ever abundant presence.
truly a beautiful movie. I watched it the 2nd time last night. if you’re one of those people who thought it was boring then you didn’t understand it at all. There’s a reason why the semingly small, unimportant moments are given a lot of time (such as many of the scenes earlier in the film, like Mara and Affleck cuddling, the infamous pie eating scene, etc), while years can pass in a single second. I bawled my eyes again watching this.
I’m about to watch it , I’ll let you guys know how it goes !!! update : ( 1 hour later ) : I cried..it was cold..sad…leaves you thinking…what a beautiful story..
This is one of the best metaphysical movies made. There's a particular theory of eternity and what the essence of a ghost really is that guides the story. Whether you agree or disagree, the poignancy of how emotional experiences are captured in this movie is unique and stunningly authentic.
Well of course. Sorry to break everyone's reality but Hollywood is built around marketing ploy, they make franchise movies for the money not for the art but then you have these gems such as A24 and Fox Searlight.
Not really, if you look back at blockbusters in Hollywood back in the 50s with the introduction of Cinemascope up to the 80s, blockbusters used to be made of original ideas with great artistic prowess.
Ersatz Person according to what I've read, it was patterned to a boxy 1.33:1 aspect ratio (with the corners rounded off like an old camera home movie) which I felt really captures the intimacy between the characters.
This story feels so true. My dad died last Oct 11, 2023. We could still feel him haunting our house. We could feel his presence. The air condition would just turn on by itself like more than 8 times by the dining room after he died. Not just the AC by the house but also in the office. One time I went to the office on a Saturday to do some work I was shocked to open the door to find that the AC was already on and the whole room was already cold. It must have been already on for hours. I realized now that sometimes a ghost can't move on...
@@mhnoni It never malfunctioned ever all when he was stilll alive. It only started two weeks after he died. Both ACs malfunctioned at the same time at the office and at the house ? Too much of a coincidence.
@@caryvill003 It is a coincidence, maybe the commercial power voltage issue which effected both. Or hearing noises outside after watching a horror movie? SPOILERS (maybe) I went to see this film after hearing about it from Connor Franta... I was so looking forward to seeing it because through the trailer I adored the way it had been filmed with the old fashion film look and it looked naturally and simply beautiful. I was not disappointed and adored the elongated scenes because it just showed the reality of living in this world filled with love and loss. The scenes emphasized the reality of just living and spending time with someone and being in the company of someone you love and miss. The film just showed a real life of a couple soon to be split from a physical being of a relationship, into a spiritual one. The scenes where relatable and I adored every minute and made me think about some things. I think this film is for anyone, however can appeal mainly towards the deep thinkers and people who enjoy hidden messages and thinking about what the director/ creator is trying to portray and it's fun doing so. I feel sad to hear that some people didn't give this film a chance, however, directors/ creators can't please the entire world as people are forever going to have contrasting views because we are only human... Thank you for the wonderous and beautiful film and I look forward to many more from you (I hope) .
This movie was wonderful ! I almost cried! It was just... so sad ... ! To everybody, please, watch this piece. It can be boring, but it was an amazing experience.
I had the privilege of watching this masterpiece in the summer of 2018. I still recall it from time to time. It was an emotional movie for me as it shows the concept of time!
Oh man this looks like actual art...the kind of movie that I just know will stay with me, in my heart and mind after I watched it. I cannot wait to see it!
Iuri Matos same bro except I'm obsessed with Keira Knightley n Isabel Lucas. I've watched all of their movies. Btw i love Rooney Mara too she's so beautiful
A24 has been on a roll lately. Every year, they seem to bring something really good. This A Ghost Story has a simple concept that uses old ideas and puts them in a different setting. I'm gonna take a wild guess that the girl would soon take on a sort of out-of-body experience. That would be interesting to see what happens within that transition. I'm intrigued.
Rooney Mara's really underrated, there's this seeming effortlessness to it where she hits all the right notes but there's no ham in anything she's doing and it doesn't seem like she's actually trying to do what she's doing (even though she must be). I can't really think of many other actors that are like that
@@nyabehotasf i don't think they've mentioned this. stays just noticed that the MV for Ex has A LOT of similarities, concept/story wise, to this movie...
"We build our legacy piece by piece. And maybe the whole world will remember you, or maybe just a couple of people. But, you do what you can to make sure you're still around after you're gone" That line just hit me so hard..chills
So I watched the movie with my friend in the movie theater. I’m not joking when I say a good portion of the audience left halfway through the movie. Because it was too boring for them. It’s a very good movie. The friend who I went with could not stop talking about it. It really affected him. He still talks about It to this day

The trailor is confusing but come after watching the movie and this will make a lot more sense. One of the most beautiful movie ever made.
I missed this movie at my local art house but I loved the trailer and Saw it on sale at target and don’t regret the purchase one bit, I still think about this movie and it makes sad but I still smile it’s such a bittersweet movie. I’m so glad I saw it, it definitely sticks with you . The way it’s shot and the way it’s able to make you feel so strongly in scenes of total silence, it really does something not many movies are capable of.
This movie is visually beautiful, but also visually terrifying at the same time. It's both the aspect ratio and the fact that it makes you feel so lonely and trapped.
This movie was absolutely breathtaking. I went to see it the night it came out and when it was over, I was left with this incredibly overwhelming feeling of uncertainty.
And so very beautiful!
They have been killing it for some time now.
Please Academy, give her the Oscar.
Nathaniel Larkin Have you seen The girl with the dragon tattoo?
The fact that there are so many stays here, lol
the ending of this movie had me sobbing. im not really sure why, and the feelings this movie left me with i cant explain either. casey's character gave me heavy feels of hopelessness and sadness throughout the film, and seeing his life loop around again and then him reading the note and vanishing.. i dont know. i just cried.
Dammit I thought it's real ghost. Very convincing special effects
lmaooooo
The whole time I was watching, I was like "HOW ARE YOU GUYS NOT TERRIFIED OF THIS GHOST?" Man that was one scary ghost.
I heard that the CG FX to make the ghost move so realistically cost 100's of thousands of dollars. xD
Waded through dozens of comments to stumble over this gem.
Sides have achieved orbit. X'D
This is not a horror movie, the point is not that it scares people.
The visuals my god the visuals
I was expecting some cosmic trippy shit but i was still not disappointed
The color handling is pretty mediocre, to be honest. And I'm not talking about the frame not being full of vivid colors (saturation or else), it's just everything looks gray, dull and boring due to bad color grading decisions.
Boi, that was clearly intentional. The film employs naturalism and objectivism. It's supposed to look mundane.
There's clearly an intentional part, but also a unintentional one...
Sergi Medina do you even know what you’re saying?
- I'm waiting for someone
- Who?
- I don't remember
This movie made me feel something that no other movie did and I will be thankfull forever for that.
David Lowery has crafted a modern-day masterpiece.
you didn't see the new transformers? Now that was profound
I agree. I watched it months ago and I am still thinking about it. In it's simplicity it is one of the saddest movies ever.
@@FoodforThought12345678dsds wtf
You have reviewed this film perfectly and I totally agree with you.
So is Casey Affleck going to spend 90% of this film with a bedsheet over his head?
frymillstrum I believe so
If he does, then he got the best job ever.
and the trick is it may not even be him :O
Imagine if he gets an Oscar nomination and wins for this - lord - that be the most biggest upset ever.
frymillstrum It might not be Casey affleck.
A LOT OF STAYS HERE...
YASSSS IM HERE TOO
Stays? Second comment I've seen on here using that term. I'm old. Urban dictionary says it could mean 'clowns '..
What is your secret, A24?
its simple. Cater to the oscars lol
Swapnil Jain not really tho
Yeah, Kev Smith's "Tusk" was total Oscar bait...
Talent.
REALIZING THAT REALISM IS BETTER THEN BLOCKBUSTER BULLSHIT
I know a lot of people don't like this movie but its one of the best movies about death, memories, and time.
This movie, the railer alone, and the song overwhelmed will always be some of my favorite things. Ive never cried harder at a movie honestly.
Should've titled it "OOOOOooOoooOOOOOO"
TJ Hastie the title could have been anything and its still a good movie, so i agree.
TJ Hastie Should’ve been ****************
Yeah dey h8 but dey broke tho
TJ Hastie should be titled: Life, Loop, Circle, Gone, Remember, Forget
No shore
All I can think of is Randy Marsh:
"It was a spooky ghost!."
this is honestly one of my faves and im glad that stays are finding out about this masterpiece because of stray kids
After watching this movie I feel like I'm a ghost due to these quarantine days
is it a good movie?
@@mayomayo7701 it is. Its an amazing movie I cry a lot 😭😢😭
I absolutely love this movie. I was a little unsure and disappointed at first. The pie scene was brutal getting through. But showed real time. Which is important to the film. I think it's best watched alone with no interruptions. Magnificent movie.
I agree. The pie scene should have been shortened by two minutes.
I think maybe we're about to witness a birth of a classic right here.
Yup.
This came out the year I lost my husband very suddenly. While it ripped what was left of me to pieces, it also had a universal truth to it that made it beautiful, and made me feel less alone.
A24 is killing it
If you look at the films they've made on IMDb, they really aren't. You only ever hear about their better movies, but they produce their fare share of mediocre crap.
Strongly suggest watching this alone, in complete peace, on the brightest screen, in the dark, at night.
Or midday when it's raining/storming outside.
A24 never ceases to amaze me, I know this came out 4 years ago but the praise I can sing for this film will never end
The trailer doesn't do this movie justice. It's so amazing its stays with you for days.
I wait this movie more than any other films like Justice League, Spider-Man, Stars Wars... Indie films are the best. Thank you A24
Luis Carlos Mendoza man true that.
these are the kind of movies much are made for art others are just to make crap load of money.
Well of course. Sorry to break everyone's reality but Hollywood is built around marketing ploy, they make franchise movies for the money not for the art but then you have these gems such as A24 and Fox Searlight.
comparing big hollywood blockusters with an art-house film was your mistake in first place
Not really, if you look back at blockbusters in Hollywood back in the 50s with the introduction of Cinemascope up to the 80s, blockbusters used to be made of original ideas with great artistic prowess.
Then you have things like Blade Runner 2049 which is think is gonna be a perfect blend of the two
stays bought me here.
Interesting aspect ratio. Looking forward in seeing this. Both great actors bringing an unusual story to life.
I was thinking the same thing about the aspect ratio. It looks weird, but I can get with the flow of it.
Ersatz Person according to what I've read, it was patterned to a boxy 1.33:1 aspect ratio (with the corners rounded off like an old camera home movie) which I felt really captures the intimacy between the characters.
Raffy Rillo Hope the movie will have that for the rest of the runtime
E&Entertainment it is actually the aspect ratio for the whole duration of the film, 1h27 mins.
Raffy Rillo Oh that's great!
I still listen to the soundtrack to this day.....I`m definitely going to watch this again.. with my significant other.. one day...when I get one...
the moment that he found the message and finally let go broke me. i started bawling
Man, this movie was great, very emotional. It make you so sad to see the loneliness. A lost soul who can not cross over. Excellent.
yes we’re all here after the skz trailer
same
yes
haha same
Yeah ..
When I saw this film I couldn´t speak for the first fifteen minutes after leaving the theater.
Same here, deeply moved
This story feels so true. My dad died last Oct 11, 2023. We could still feel him haunting our house. We could feel his presence. The air condition would just turn on by itself like more than 8 times by the dining room after he died. Not just the AC by the house but also in the office. One time I went to the office on a Saturday to do some work I was shocked to open the door to find that the AC was already on and the whole room was already cold. It must have been already on for hours. I realized now that sometimes a ghost can't move on...
Really?
Sorry, but this was a movie, people don't turn to ghosts, you need to fix your AC.
Your dad may he rip.
Sometimes, our brain plays tricks on us and we start to link unrelated activities with each other,
Have you ever experienced hearing the ring of your phone even though your phone never rang when you were waiting for someone to call you?
Or hearing noises outside after watching a horror movie?
So my session is don't ruin your memory of your father, he is not turning off your AC. if you keep believing it, you will dig a deep hole you will have a hard time finding your way out. it will make your life a lot harder, try to watch the movie "The Number 23" to understand more of what I mean. it's a great movie.
This movie will hit you right where it hurts, and yet I loved it. 10/10
The monologue is the best part of the movie!!
This is one of the most beautiful movies I've seen from 2017 - a post-horror romantic story that will take your breath away
SPOILERS (maybe)
I went to see this film after hearing about it from Connor Franta...
Alex Ride Well said!
Just saw on Netflix. Not a scary movie, not a romantic movie (thank God) ... very beautiful in a way.
This movie was wonderful !
I almost cried! It was just... so sad ... !
To everybody, please, watch this piece. It can be boring, but it was an amazing experience.
I had the privilege of watching this masterpiece in the summer of 2018. I still recall it from time to time. It was an emotional movie for me as it shows the concept of time!
this movie was incredible. probably the first time I've ever had tears from a movie.
This movie won't scare you, but it will haunt you.
Arguably the most unique movie I have ever seen.
Oh man this looks like actual art...the kind of movie that I just know will stay with me, in my heart and mind after I watched it. I cannot wait to see it!
Agnes I felt the same about their last movie - Swiss Army Man
This trailer already made me cry.. can't wait to see it in boston!
This lingered in my heart and mind months after watching it
Rooney Mara is absolutely beautiful
Kartikeya Dutta Indeed
Kartikeya Dutta her sister is beautiful too. I love both of them
Your kidding? She's a dog lol
I so love Rooney Mara's voice

You know what is life
A24 has been on a roll lately. Every year, they seem to bring something really good. This A Ghost Story has a simple concept that uses old ideas and puts them in a different setting. I'm gonna take a wild guess that the girl would soon take on a sort of out-of-body experience. That would be interesting to see what happens within that transition. I'm intrigued.
natural sounds and natural silence of the place will really make you feel the moment like if you are standing on that piece of land.
Rooney Mara's really underrated, there's this seeming effortlessness to it where she hits all the right notes but there's no ham in anything she's doing and it doesn't seem like she's actually trying to do what she's doing (even though she must be). I can't really think of many other actors that are like that
Man anyone know the name of the song?
"I Get Overwhelmed" by Dark Rooms
EoghanMcCarthy900 Kesha wrote the song 🙃
damn i thought this was a Bon Iver song
Cameron Shynovick no she wrote a different song in the film
puncakes chris it does have a serious Bon Iver vibe

when did they mention dis???
@@nyabehotasf i don't think they've mentioned this. stays just noticed that the MV for Ex has A LOT of similarities, concept/story wise, to this movie...
This trailer made me tear up.
"We build our legacy piece by piece. And maybe the whole world will remember you, or maybe just a couple of people. But, you do what you can to make sure you're still around after you're gone"
That line just hit me so hard..chills
So I watched the movie with my friend in the movie theater. I’m not joking when I say a good portion of the audience left halfway through the movie. Because it was too boring for them. It’s a very good movie. The friend who I went with could not stop talking about it. It really affected him. He still talks about It to this day
A brilliant, beautiful piece of cinema, its simplicity is what makes it work.. You'll love it or hate it but you won't forget it.
Whos here bc of skz

this movie will make so many people cry, mark my words
Beautiful film! I was the only one in the theater watching it (thank god), and if you're a fan of art films or movies by A24, you're going to love this movie. The slow burning pie scene might be one of my favorite movie moments.
I think she wrote on the note at the end "Time isn't real, but depression is eternal"
The director said it doesn't matter what the note says. It could have said "Boo."
If you are on the fence whether to watch this, please do yourself a favour and watch it already, you will thank me later. This is one of the most under popular movie ever made. The trailor is confusing but come after watching the movie and this will make a lot more sense. One of the most beautiful movie ever made.
It’s one of the most boring piles of rubbish known to man. Pretentious art house crap film
This movie is just a beautiful poem, the visuals are absolutely stunning.
This film broke my heart by the time it ended. It was truly beautiful.
This movie is visually beautiful, but also visually terrifying at the same time. It's both the aspect ratio and the fact that it makes you feel so lonely and trapped.
This film hurts. It is absolutely 10/10
