    I personally love the Majin Boo arc. Yes, there are plenty of contrivances, and power scaling conundrums, but god dammit, there are so many things to love! Fusion, Ultimate Gohan, Vegetto, Majin Vegeta, Vegeta's character arc, Super Saiyan 3, Majin Boo, Mr. Satan's character arc, Gotenks, the advancement of the god hierarchy, Dabura, Saiyaman, Videl, Oob, etc.

    when you realised that vegeta did a chiaotzu

    • @extragirth64
      @extragirth64 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yeah but there was a point to Vegeta's sacrifice greater than the act itself.

    • @spambamkeija634
      @spambamkeija634 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Chiaotzu made a noble move as much as Vegeta for the same cause.

    • @extragirth64
      @extragirth64 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      ***** D Franklin34
      I never said the act of their sacrifices were any different, just that for Vegeta there was extra meaning behind his sacrifice. It signified a change in Vegeta's character. Chiaotzu was already good, making his sacrifice just an excuse to get him out of the story.
      Vegeta's sacrifice is an improvement. The fact that it was meaningless act does not harm the sacrifice.

    I love when Goku calls Vegeta on his bluff.

    • @user-zz8ye7gc4r
      @user-zz8ye7gc4r 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mee too. Vegeta thought he could just turn Majin, get that power-up and get what he wants by fighting Goku to prove he's the ultimate Saiyan without any repercussions. Well that plan backfired and once Goku called Vegeta on his bluff about Vegeta forgetting about his Wife & Kid, Vegeta knows he's done fucked up. And that's one of the best redemption arcs I've ever seen besides Sasuke

    anyone else notice that vegeta has been both a demon (majin vegeta) and then a god? I don't think there is any character in the series that has gone through such a radical transformation.

    Great video Geekdom, I have been trying to tell people for a while now that Dragon Ball Z has a lot of great themes and character development under all that fighting, it is really something worth checking out! Even a lot of Dragon Ball fans don't see the great character development in the Buu arc. Nice to see you spreading the word!

  • @AustoLaVista
    @AustoLaVista 8 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    Vegeta in my opinion is the most developed character in all of DBZ. Every arc he changes more and more from evil to bad. Saiyan arc he was evil and wanted to destroy Goku and Earth. Namek/Frieza arc he was still bad but teaming up with Krillin Gohan and Piccolo also poring his heart out to Goku on his death bed we started to see he's actually nit a bad guy. Android/Cell arc he's now an allie with the Z fighters but still wants to be better than Goku not kill him anymore. Buu arc now he's a family man with a wife and son struggles with the last of his inner demons still inside him till the very end when he finally excepts that Goku is just better.

    This might sound crazy but I cried when Vegeta admitted Goku was better than him. Mainly cuz I have so much respect for Vegeta as a fighter, beating Frieza's henchmen, overcoming so much. Eve He still refers himself as a prince even though his father's gone. True pride right there man.. great video big d 👊

    In my own opinion. This arc was fairly interesting, even with some of the best moments in the show, i think they should not have done so many concepts in one arc, if anything i think it would feel a bit better if they instead had their own story for Mystic Gohan, Ss 3, and fusion instead of having limited importance to the plot

    I jump back and forth between the Namek saga, and Boo saga as my favorite arcs. I just love that the Boo arc subverts our expectations with multiple false deus ex machina's. First we are shown that Babadi has nothing that can stand against Goku and Vegeta. Then Majin Boo shows up and is stronger than imagined, Vegeta sacrificed himself and obliterates Boo, but it doesn't work. Then Goku shows up and goes ss3, a new trump card, but again, it doesn't work (even though he could of?). Then Mr. Satan befriends him and helps him become good, threat over? Nope some asshole shoots his dog and Satan and Boo splits in two then reforms as evil and becomes stronger. But fusion! doesn't work. Ss3 fusion. Doesn't work. Gohan at his full potential! Boo absorbs gotenks and Piccolo. Potara! gets defused. They weaken boo, ss3 viable again, doesn't work. Good boo and vegeta? Nope. Then we get the Genki Dama, a move used twice before, to no effect in the manga cannon. But now, we get the biggest one ever, and it works! Set ups and pay offs! None of the new techniques work, but the Genki Dama, an old technique that's never worked. Brillant! Even if it wasn't planned that way! I feel like the Boo arc is a satire of the Cell arc, one of the most beloved arcs in the franchise. I think its great! I find it funny and a real return to form after several uber serious arcs, while maintaining a similar tone when it's needed. Man I can go on but no ones going to read this anyways.

    The other videos about the other arcs were more detailed.
    You missed few times. Such as family drama or something like that. Goku's interaction with Goten, Goku with Gohan (Gohan was like a true saiyan when he came back... instead of being a hero of justice, he was like a saiyan son wanting to have fun with his dad). Vegeta and Trunks... Vegeta always had this fear of getting used to love, family and so on... yet, after he confessed his feelings, worries to Goku.. he realized he cares about his family, the way he hugged and knocked out Trunks was quite something.
    I think family is a big part of it. The variety in families, the variable circumstances and feelings were a big part of that. Even Kururin/Krillin going against super Buu knowing full well it meant instant death cause he seen his wife and daughter in the background.
    Goten seen his mother transformed into an egg and squashed. Chichi thinks that no matter what a child should not be the one to face Buu and out of rage for the well being of her son, confronts him.
    Gotenks, seeing his mother being eaten as chocolate... family issue and family drama.
    Edit: I really loved your other videos of the arcs and the analysis but I was hoping for more themes.

    What if Buu was, in fact, originally created by the Omni king to be an eternal god of destruction? But after absorbing the most evil creatures in the universe in attempts to get stronger, he became less of a god and more of an immortal evil entity? And absorbing creatures made others able to sense his ki? So by absorbing non-godly creatures, he became less godly each time. So he eventually stopped being the god of destruction all together and just started doing what ever the hell he wanted. That might explain why he is as old as the universe and immortal. Someone had to have created him for a purpose.

    12:00 I understood that part of the saga like this - Once Vegeta (who could secretly go ssj2) saw that Goku could go SSJ2 as well he realized that his years of training have almost been for naught and his one chance to fight Goku would result in a loss so he had to go evil by being mindcontrolled + by getting a power boost from Babidi.

    I've been waiting for this last installment of the saga themes and as always it was well worth it. Its really interesting just how many themes there are throughout DBZ that might not be noticeable upon a person's initial viewing. I really appreciate the predominant overarching themes of hope, perseverance, and redemption found throughout the series. While the Buu arc has plenty of plotholes and contrivances, it does have its moments and strengths as it was explained here.
    Its a shame Super doesn't have actual themes like Z. That's a testament to the superior writing that Z had.

    Vegeta also missed the old Vegeta: the conqueror, the Prince, the Saiyajin. But Vegeta was also surprised to find another part of him a good part. That wounded him because he didnt know who we was truly: the father or the prince. And to know who he was he needed to complete the circle with Goku, to the have the rematch. He NEEDED to be controlled, to be his old self once more to close the circle with Goku. But at the end his heart was with his family. Its something like the missing ending of the Clockwork Orange. Vegeta grew up.

    Intriguing ponderings as usual and a fantastic way to open up diverse arenas of dialogue within the fandom. Just one thing, Brogeta; I would've left that last thing you said as an end credits scene somehow. Let the music fade and have white letters on a black screen say "Is there more?" or something to that effect, then roll correlating pics and music until you fade to black again. Just a thought, Mr. Ice Cold... ~_~

    I honestly missed that Mr Satan could be a reference to the Satan himself! Nicely done video overall! (Also, sempai from anime live reactions sent me here, or i rather discovered your channel through the video you made with him a week ago, so i expect another tag in the near future...)

    Its also important to note that Mr. Satan making Buu good, is what makes Satan the real world champion, something Piccolo even admits. Satan did not use violence, but he befriend Buu in a peaceful manner. Meaning that violence will never be the solution to any conflict.

    There are theories that the character of Majin Buu was based on us Westerlings, especially Americans, he was the manifistation of the Americans. That is why he eats candy etc

    First I'd like to say the way you approach this is a lot better then a lot of youtubers I see though I wished you could have gone over the East Supreme kai's character development a bit more. Even if it was in a different episode one funny thing you might see is the SK's similarity to Gohan actually, and was really just a child forced into the role of a savior.

    The spiritual themes of the Buu saga harken back to the days of Dragon Ball with its mystical and spiritual elements. The Buu saga contrasts with the sci-fi themes of all the previous Z sagas (such as the scouters, traveling to other planets with spaceships and meeting aliens who aren't spiritual like the Kais) and especially the mechanical, biological and at times going a bit into horror territory themes of the Cell saga.

    Honestly one of the best dramatic deaths in anime. First time I saw that episode with Vegita sacrificing himself like he did I just was like WOW!

    Yo Geekdom. Love your vids as always, but have you ever considered having music ON when you narrate/speak? To me it just sucks out the emotion when in the title cards (Part I, II, etc) music plays and then it cuts to just you talking (along with the static in the background). I think your vids would increase in value and quality if you have music in the background like when you do your Super Manga Reviews (but just enough where we can hear your voice, like what Rhymestyle does).

    The friendship between Fat Buu and Mr. Satan was also beautiful. When Hercule was shot, you saw Buu's distress and how much he cared for him. When Buu was knocked out in the Kid Buu Saga, you saw how hurt that made Hercule and how much Buu meant to him. This isn't necessarily a theme, but I think it's still something worth mentioning.

    In a way the I think Buu Arc is considered to be the Rocky V of DBZ series.
    Don't get me wrong I love the Buu Arc, plus the relationship between Goku and Vegeta is pretty much the highlight of this arc. In fact if you think about it, it's actually quite similar to the plot of Toy Story.

    I really loved this arc... it is definately not perfect... but I usually tend to find a lot of flawed movies, games, series to be really awesome. And the vegita character development here was absolutely amazing.

    Small question but are you thinking about doing this for the original Dragon Ball series? Just thought Id ask since I love this series and would love to see you keep it going.
    Edit-LOL I got to the end and realized its already coming!
    Also Im surprised you didnt touch on the parallels between Goku and Jesus in this saga. Sent by god he came back from the dead to save humanity and all who are good from a terrible evil and so on. Then again, I understand how you can only cover so much at a time in these vids.

    vegeta sacrificing himself to kill buu was him trying to replicate what goku did with cell. it was vegeta being selfish and wanting the glory. it just happened to look heroic to everyone else. but you're to say vegetas soliloquy at the end when goku fights buu is the major turning point in vegetas character
