It gets more intense as you age... everything we overcame with limited minds..
I know exactly what you mean. My first exposure to this song was only recently, and it was the acoustic version on the "Echo Echo" album. It's even more haunting than this original version. When I heard the song and lyrics, I was struck in such a strange, indescribable, emotional way.
Probably my most favorite track on the album. So damn meaningful and powerful, and so freaking dark. There's an underlying meaning and I feel like I can feel it but can't quite define it yet. The artist probably meant for it to be that way, to be ambiguous so that anyone can relate and put their own meaning for whatever's keeping them up at night, despite all the apparent perfection of their lives, or let's say, despite how perfect their lives may seem.

I resonate over this song. When I was 16 I remember laying in bed, the first night back in my own home since we had a series of unfortunate events, one being a house fire. Things had finally sorted out, we got compensated and replaced everything, I have doing good in school, my relationship at the time was great, my reaction with my step dad was great, I was making stable money through small jobs everything was perfect I had NO reason to be sad. But I felt this sick feeling I'm now very familiar with, it felt like a gnawing feeling in my stomach and I felt overwhelmingly sad and my thoughts were racing, I kept thinking really morbid things for no reason, (I experienced alot of death that year losing loved ones and health issues with others) I started having compulsive thoughts an ditch scared me. I remember this alien feeling and telling my parents but they got mad at me and said I was just being dramatic since it was the first day back in the house and everything would be going back to normal. Well... months later I'm in therapy and was diagnosed with a slew of medical conditions that had been apparently ignored since I was a kid, my parents always thought I was just "different", my doctor even said as a kid "her brain hadn't meshed yet" I had a lot of autism symptoms but it was revealed I had borderline personality disorder. With that came ocd, adhd, panic disorder, depression. That day was when a majority of my life changed and I'm now 22 and still deal with these feelings despite mental help and therapy. This song reminds me of the depression I felt, the racing thoughts, despite everything had been going so good. That day, was the day that was chosen for me to start experiencing all my issues all at once and it was explained later why it happened at that time and I understand everything now. It's still upsetting but.. I'm glad this song is able to allow others to share their own issues and mental health problems.
apart from the sorrowful beats & the subtle content, Chris articulates in a fantastic way...his articulation empowers every line with great emotion.

Love this track so frickin much. Racking my brain trying to fathom another track (non-IAMX) that I'm sure shared the bassline that comes in at 0:17 - any ideas?
I haven’t seen this confirmed anywhere, but I’m pretty sure the whole musical arrangement, minus the lyrics, is a creative riff on/tribute to Italian composer Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack for the movie “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.” The second I heard the female vocals come in, I was like, ‘Oh, this is “The Ecstasy of Gold!”’ (A song that is sampled EXTENSIVELY from that score). The electronic crescendo around 2:42 really echoes that song too. The bassline around 0:17 can be heard briefly in “Ecstasy,” but is a recurring theme in much of the score. I can’t recall which songs have it the most, but you can hear it prominently (but with different tempo) near the beginning of “The Trio,” and as an quiet undercurrent (sorry, I don’t know the musical term) in the second half of “The Desert.” There are probably better tracks on the score to hear that bassline again, but I recommend checking out The Ecstasy of Gold to get a feel for how brilliantly IAMX reinvented some classic Morricone arrangements!
