3:18 the Ambo in your shot was known as MED 2, and at Oakey for must of its life. I’ve recently purchased it and am bringing it home and it will don the plates MED*002. Fittingly, for I drove and operated out of it from 93-04. 92/93 for a year I deployed with the 4x4 & 6x6 Perentie for their first operational used in Cambodia. You can’t go wrong as you’ve seen.
I soundproofed the cabin in mine with PingJing sound deadener. I bought mine from a roofrack place in Dandenong. The reviews online showed great results and all in all I was very happy with the result. Worked out a lot cheaper than the more well known brands. I did every panel inside the cabin my 6x6 including in the doors and inside the cavitites where the filler cap goes and the difference was noticeable. It went from not being able to hear anything to being able to have a conversation in the cab. Well worth the effort. I also used penetrol on all the doors to help protect against corrosion and sealed around the windows using butyl rubber to prevent water going down into the doors. Great vehicle
Thanks Benjamin. I’ve been a Landie nut since 1971. I’m in the process of buying a 6x6 Cargo Perentie myself. I concur with your views on KLR, I’ve been dealing with them for years, at least since they were located in Kingswood, and thoroughly trust them and their abilities.
Great video. I have the 6x6 general maintenance - I think it's pretty awesome, but hate the turning circle. Totally agree that some sound deadening is a worthy upgrade.
I know its an old engine that's solid as hell but it uses a lot of fuel for the amount of fuel it uses. The Armies fix for how loud they are was to limit the speed to 80km/h (Unimog's max out around 90 down hill anyway). One thing that used to be common was blowing the diaphragms' for the 6x6 system. There used to be an O-ring in the top of the steering box that would let go.(the Army got a heap of boxes rebuilt at one point and the wrong O-rings got fitted). One thing that might catch you out is there is a banjo bolt (i think in the side of the lift pump) that has a plastic screen in it. Not many people know about it but if it clogs you are dead in the water, or it will run for a few kms then die in the arse. Im pretty sure my old GMV and the IIMV version had duel 90 litre tanks in them.
Spot on. I drove and operated from 50620 Med2 at Oakey for many years. The banjo filter is definitely an unknown by many. The down rated all 6x6 bar the Ambo 😜 for we could never be late to the party. During exercises we also had exemption for stand to and no road movement, which once CO’s became aware of I ended up doing the Ops orders runs with them so we could bug out on completion. Pick up Med 2 in Jan, and have offloaded my FFR to my sister to do so.
@@daring2venture671 yeah I scheduled a heap of stuff ahead of time, gonna be a month of medical stuff for me. but hopefully we can get you to 1000 subs soon, and get some money heading your way.
Very interesting. I can recommend Car Builders sound proofing, which I fitted to our Defender. Comes in rolls with peel-off backing. Make sure you choose the waterproof version so it doesn't sit there soggy causing rust. Particularly effective on the transmission tunnel, footwells and firewall, but you could also do the doors and roof. Can it really only tow 2 tonnes?
@daring2venture671 is the towing only two tonnes because the payload is so much? Very different to our 110, which can tow 3.5 tonnes, but lower payload.
I owned one & agree with everything you said. It’s impossible to appreciate the heat, noise & vibration when driving these any distance. The vehicle has endurance but does the driver? I sold it & bought a Patrol - from one extreme to the other 🤣
KLR are the go too! Loaded mine with gravel for the farm to a GVM of 9 ton, truck was fine but wouldn’t recommend this on a public road. Transmission mounted hand brake held on a steep hill no problem, take note Landcrusier
How much reduction do you reckon you’ll get with the sound deadening? Reportedly they are about 82db standard. My 300tdi Defender is 75db with a little bit of deafening, which is still too loud.
Not sure mate. But like everything I am going to go nuts with the rubber. Will look like a bat man suit once I’m done so I will make a vid about the whole thing once I get into it 😉
@@daring2venture671 thanks. The standard tyres look a bit small to me. It’s only an aesthetic thing though. Having zero offset rims would be better for scrubbing?

lol yeah at 80 its not too bad. but the roar that comes after 90 is crazy !:)

@@michaelsecomb4115 thanks mate. Yes, only two tonne towing. But the disc brakes on it are bloody massive 😂

Yeah maybe. I do know of others who have upgraded their pay load so who knows 🤷🏾♂️

Can you fit 35 inch tyres and a 2 inch lift 😁
probably, although it would put the speedo out and scrub badly at full lock ....

id imagine the axles wouldn't like 35s to much though
Do you have a link to the manuals? Thanks
