I made 1 in 100% EVOO in rosemary/lemon e/o in 2019 let it cure for a year. It was a blessing to my friend had a double mastectomy in 2021. It was the only thing that help with the chemo and radiation she had to receive. I'm a cancer survivor and those treatments are horrendous. Thanks for sharing your recipe with other soapers. Many blessings.
Ellen I made a 100% olive oil soap using chamomile and calendula infused olive oil back on 2020, let it cure for an entire year and it’s AMAZING 😻, honestly my preferred soap for face and tired hands
it's so luxurious and pristine, I am a huge fan of olive oil, I use it for my face to cleanse, moisturize with rosehip oil ad that's it for my skin care-magical, the herbal scents are divine and soothing
I usually do 2:1 water/lye ratio on everything but I may try a little steeper for Castile. I usually do 8lbs batches and do several of those Castile because waiting a year is tough. Boy is it worth the wait!!! I use pomace oil, a little castor and vitamin E. Ruth you’ve got me jazzed again to make more. I don’t give these bars to just anyone. They’re coveted for sure.

Thanks for this recipe for 100% Olive oil! I super love 100% Olive oil soap & your recipe for 10%super fatted is a great idea. I'm one of those people that has very sensitive skin...cheep skin!!! So I'm going to try your recipe with 10% super fatted. Thanks again ❤
HI I have learned so much from you and you have been so nice to answer my questions SO today I thought I would tell you of a recipe I found that I think you might want to try - have you heard of Zany's no slim castile soap? I made it and I was really impressed - it is online but just in case you make jar of I quart warm water 1 Tablespoon each of sea salt and baking soda - cool - super fat at 0 and 1.17:1 for water to lye ratio. I made it at 110 degree F which helped with faster emulsion. I made it in individual molds no insulating took 1.5 days to set and perfect - I did another batch with oven, as she said and was not happy with the look - maybe for a log - I am not an oven fan would rather use a blanket - I don't sell soap and just an advanced beginner lol I just did a 4 bar trial any how if you ever have a spare minute give it a try AND THANKS for being the best teacher!!!
Thank you for this recipe and thank you for the reminder of Essential Depot. I went over there and until 3-25-22, they are discounting their lifetime membership. WOW! a super huge discount! So I signed up for that, because that's where I've purchased my sodium hydroxide in the past. Thank you again.
I have such mixed feelings about castile soap. But it's history and the slow-ness with which it is associated, makes me love it, I suppose. There just IS something about it. Love your content xx
Good morning Ellen, It's 3:56 AM (EST) on Oct 7th, The method you use looks as if it would fit in a way to my making soap. I developed a skin sensitivity post-COVID-19. Dermatologists refuse to acknowledge that the Vaccine got away from them. So...I'll do what my mother and grandmother did, take care of it myself with what God put on the earth for us. I truly appreciate your post.
I made my first batch of castile soap with 5% water discount which this batch was just a test run and added sodium lactate. after 3 days of sitting in the mold it was still really soft so imma try the 10% discount and try again. Just so i can have a harder bar. I was a little worried about a highr water discount because I've never done it over 5%.
5% discounted from what? I would've thought once your 50/50 water lye solution is made everything after that is adding water so I'm a bit confused why its called discounting when your really adding water.
That would be a whole different soap recipe, with different sap values. Here's a video with several soap recipes and how to use soap calc: th-cam.com/video/SO5n4uWEVO0/w-d-xo.html
Hi Ellen! This video made me really want to diy soap! I do have a question. After you poured it did you put it in the fridge or freezer? Also, did you let it sit for the 4 weeks before slicing? Is that rest time done in the fridge? Thank you for your time 🤍
I love this video - can you add say honey or any clay or coconut milk etc to olive oil soap or no just keep it plain - love your videos i have learned so much it is fun to make it for home THANK YOU!
I wonder, with a beautiful single colour simple soap like this, if it would be worth splitting the batter into two pots and using a different water discount in each to get a feather swirl? 🤔
Good afternoon! First time making soap . Willing to try this simple recipe . Question . I’m confused with the 10 or 12 oz of water . Can you please clarify. Thanks love your recipe. Thanks you for all the tips .
I prefer to soap with a very steep water discount. For this recipe you can use as low as 10 oz, but if you're more comfortable working with more water, you can go higher.. I suggest running the numbers thru soap calc with the water % you want...
Thanks you so much for taking time from your schedule. You are a truly inspiration. I identified a lot with you . Also a mother 4 boys and I used to homeschool too. You’re a truly a soap making artist . Once again thank you so much . Blessings

This soap looks beautiful. Is your stamp metal? I have purchased a couple plastic stamps and they do not work as easy as your does. Your stamping came out beautiful as well. Thanks for sharing this.
Hi Ellen, I would like to try the 10% super fat recipe but without the essential oils. Does that mean I need to change any quantities of ingredients because I am not using the essential oil? The essential oil accounts for 1.5 to 2 extra ounces. Or can I stick to the same recipe and just omit the tea tree oil? Thank you for your guidance!
hi I am sorry to ask another question but Im a bit worried about those saying castille soap can grow mold and spoil,- have you found this ? Do you need to refrigerate it if you dont have a cool place in the summer months - THANK you so much I googled n could not find a reliable answer - thank you so much again for your time
Are there only certain oils you can do 100% with? I'd love to try a full macadamia or pumpkin seed oil soap. If you add sugar to the lye, how much do you suggest? I'd love to color this with beet powder or Red Moroccan Clay.
Hi Ellen, they look super creamy! A few months ago I made a bastille soap - 85% olive oil and 15% coconut oil. My lye concentration was 38.5% (that is a lye to water ratio of 1:1.6, so a pretty steep water discount). I was unable to stamp my soap for a month as the bars were too soft and pulled soap away with the stamp. It looks like you are stamping the day after with no issues. Do you have any ideas why I am having stamping woes?
Hi Ellen! Since there is a steep water discount and they are hard in a day, does that decrease the cure time? Is 4-6 weeks enough time? Thank you for all your wonderful videos! You inspire me!!
Hi thank u for the video. I have a question. I noticed that you have to use sodium hydroxide to get it to harden etc. Can the sodium hydroxide be harsh on the skin even if its just the additive in the olive oil soap bars you have made? Is there an alternative other than the lye? Can you make the bars without the lye? Thank u ❤
Hi from Mexico 🎉🎉🎉So for this batch did you end up using 10, 11 or 12 oz of 💦 water? Kindly this would help me out & thank you for posting this video!!!
Hi Ellen. My olive oil soap seems to always be crumbly along the bottom edges. The last batch I made (cold process) had sodium lactate and I'm thinking if I leave the sodium lactate out, it might help with the crumbly look. What do you or anyone else, for that matter, think?
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you for replying! That’s what i thought. I forgot to ask my 2nd question about the first 24hrs…do you cover the mold with towels? Or just in the mold with no cover.

Mine is not Castile anymore, i add 5% Castor oil and i use beer as my liquid, thats it! I actually like a cross between a cream cleanser and a light foaming cleanser. Love this for my face. But for my body i need bubbles!

You can’t make soap without lye, but if you’re using a proper recipe, all the lye is saponified with the oils making a nice gentle pH.

Dera Ellen,
Does this soap have a scent ?

Yes 👍 I have a couple of videos on that

What’s a water discount ? Do you get a firmer bar with more or less water?

Yes, S Lactate does make my soap crumbly but just use less and it should be ok.

No, you must use sodium hydroxide to make this soap
