I've been so sick of the boring strip "malls" that are just everywhere. They're just a parking lot surrounded by the same old boring stores you always need, and I wish they would stop coming up when I search for malls. This mall is refreshing to see. Aesthetically pleasing, fun to walk around in (assuming it's not mad hot out), and most importantly fountains. Glad we could get some good fountain cam in
@@cmdraftbrn Back in the early-mid 1990s, most BB had an entire long wall of head units, speakers, and even amps and equalizers too. I remember because I was there!
Dude! I lived in Tempe for five years and had completely forgotten about Tempe Marketplace. I used to ride my motorcycle down there and eat at the Yogi’s Grill there all the time. I remember one January (I think it was 2017?) when we got all that rain and it turned the desert green. I went down to Tempe Marketplace while it was raining and sat next to that fireplace one morning and did a lot of writing. I’ve got a lot of good memories of Tempe Marketplace. Thanks for reminding me of the good times.
I went there during Christmas-time and it was really nicely decorated and had great atmosphere. I listened to a live performance for a little while. Great place to go.
Safety or infrastructure is always the first to get you shut down, most have to focus on that, and if the profits are low, no mo-mo-money for anything else.
I'm noticing a lot of malls starting to come back to life in my area, especially the two outdoor malls that look exactly like this one. I not only credit it to the new trend of beautifully decorating the exteriors with plants and water features, but I also feel the waning quality of online shopping is giving brick and mortar credibility again. Man, online shopping last Christmas was ROUGH, I'm looking forward to a nice Christmas sip 'n' stroll finding charming puzzles and toys for the kids.
This is pretty cool. I didn't know that Hot Topic owns Boxlunch, but that would make sense. Powerman 5000 and Buckcherry? Awesome! Wish our mall had a space for concerts. Thanks for the video.
I lived down the street from Tempe Marketplace for a couple of years. It’s really nice, but the outdoor mall concept just doesn’t work in the Phoenix Metro area. Maybe it’s because I didn’t grow up there, but when it’s 120 degrees out I really don’t feel like doing any strolling. They let kids play in that jet fountain that you see in the end of the video, so that’s cool. They do what they can to help you beat the heat, but you really only want to go there at the end of the day.
I love Tempe Marketplace. I used to go there every weekend. I loved the fountains and the fireplace across from the Harkins theater. Slices and Smashburger were my two favorite restaurants.
This one's pretty nice, I love water features. And thank you for the PSA on not leaving your garbage everywhere. I laughed at the end when you said "everybody still calls it twitter. X is stupid, Elon can suck it" lol. I feel the same way.
This place looks nice and with a solid retail mix! I reallly love the water features…that’s my thing! One thing that would make this area or mall nicer is a housing component…like Westgate in Glendale, AZ.
Many fun memories of going there with friends when I was an ASU student, might go again sometime soon. Although I'm sad Charming Charlie's and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf is no longer around I appreciate the new Sephora and Hot Topic expansion. I agree with you with the Funko fatigue, I feel like I can't escape them but then again I can't escape the almighty Mouse either but never noticed it till I pay attention.
We have an outdoor outlet mall here in Houston .. it’s brutal in the summer.. I used to live in AZ .. this mall would be horrible to walk around in July when it’s 115 outside.
i used to live on off campus housing when i went to asu from 2009-2012 and tempe marketplace was my go to place to get everything i needed. from target to the bars and the harkins? ugh, wish i could experience it all again.
Planning to see Powerman 5000 in Rochester next month. Nothing beats a good band and a garbage plate. Wish i could go the following week for Green Jello.
Huzzah for fountain cam! Great video. 😊 Thanks for showing us this nice spot; now I really want to check it out. I first heard about Tempe Marketplace as a good destination for playing PokémonGO. (Yes, I still play! I never stopped. 😁).
OK, it's definitely worth it to view until the end of this one (twitter is a textbook case of what to NOT do with your brand recognition!) I have to keep in mind that "beautiful weather" is a relative thing. Given this is Phoenix area, the definition is probably close to "not oppressively 'fire is a dry heat' HOT" I haven't been to my area's only not-dead mall in many years, though. It's the usual indoor mall built on previous farm land
I've never heard of this place before. It's a nice looking outdoor mall and to be fair this is the only time we Arizonaions can be outside and enjoy a mall like this without dying. Oh man it's great to see fountain cam seeing it's return.
LOVE Tempe Marketplace ! I am in South Scottsdale so I go down there quite a bit. They have a Great Variety of shopping down there. The Wilford Brimley ghost in the Sugar Shop made me Giggle ! Great job on this, I enjoyed viewing it ! 😊
My favorite outdoor mall still is waterside shops in Naples, Florida. Even though they stupidly redesigned it and it is not as nice as it once was, it is still really nice. They opened it up more and made it easier to get over the water. Features is what they did and added a parking garage. The first time I went there after it was renovated I got lost.
Orlando: Orlando.gov has Pointe Orlando 🛒 which has been a big tourist spot for years but by late 2010s lost a big part of its luster, appeal. A large IMAX screen theater is the main draw. 🎟
I had family who used to live in mesa back when this mall first opened. I remember going to visit them and walking around the mall before going into the theatre to watch a movie. It’s nice to see it’s still there!
I love the aesthetics and calming atmosphere of this mall! It’s beautiful to see mall plants and fountains looking so lush and well cared for! Thanks for doing what you do, Retail Archeology!! 😊
Truly grateful of your videos that bring me back to a mental space where I was happy to be where I used to hang out. I really appreciate what you do. And I hope you can branch out and reach other destinations. Love what you do 👍
My auntie took me there when i went to go see Transformers Age of Extinction at Harkins in June 2014 9 years later she took me to watch Transformers Rise of the Beasts in June 2023. Even i go to the Barnes and Noble for my Legos and Gundam sometime.
This video has so much that I would have missed if I hadn't seen the Twitter post with the link. I really love Fountain Cam! Stroll and Sip is a great concept and the quick Segway into the old Wilford Brimley "Diabeetus" commercial. Ol' Mr. Brimley would have gotten high blood sugar just looking at the candy store. I would have bought several packs of the candy cigarettes and a I Love to Fart mug. I just may have to watch it again. 😀 👍
Ooo, I went here last year during my trip for graduation from ASU! I'm from SoCal so this mall was super neat and had lots to see. Awesome to know I visited the same mall as Retail Archaeology now :D
I like small outdoor malls myself, but that might be because they don't really exist where I live, so I mostly only experience them on vacation. That fountain towards the end with the LED lighting effects probably looks way better after dark.
I have taken the wife and kids to this location several times. Was not aware that it was once a landfill a very toxic industrial site. It is quite a pleasant place to see, particularly at the right time of year. We would not necessarily head there during summer but it is quite beautiful during the holiday season. They will usually have a huge and gorgeous Christmas tree near the area where the stage is located. Highly recommend seeing it should you be in the area during that time of year.
Sadly I didnt see this as quickly as normal due to the disaster that twitter has become leading me to rarely even signing on there. Thanks for the video as always :)
hey return of the fountain-cam! definitely one of my favorite things in these mall videos. love the disco horse, haha. seems like a pretty cool mall, dig that candy store! reminds me of one we had near us many years ago, rocket fizz? also curious about that Japanese place I hope they have some killer sushi!
I like Tempe marketplace. There was this one time during 2020 COVID quarantine period I was there hanging out on my day off in the middle of the week and it was kinda warm out for May, this random dog was off his owner's leash, jumped into one of the water fountains near Barnes and Nobles and was juat happily splashing around.
This video was super interesting to see! I've never seen a Tempe Marketplace before but as a Colorado resident I'm pretty sure we don't have one. We do have a few outdoor malls/shopping strips though. We also have the Park Meadows Mall which is very surprisingly always busy! I loved seeing the palm trees lol, I've never been to LA/California so it was a nice little bonus even though you can see them on so many videos if you just look it up. I subbed a little while ago and love watching these videos. I can't wait to see more!
One thing they do differently is that this is a major public transportation hub. They have bus stops for multiple bus routes in the middle of Tempe Marketplace.
Reminds me of the pedestrianised high streets of the UK. It's been a while since I've lived there, but I still take a virtual walk (thanks, Google Maps streetview!) down Gillingham and Chatham high street in Kent. I don't think I've seen a single store that I remember, except for the banks. The car-centric design of US malls is still jarring to me sometimes, and I've been here for nearly half my life now, so it's nice to see an attempt at bringing an old main street vibe to a mall.
It makes sense to have open air malls in the American southwest , but in most of the United States it may not work so well where it gets colder and nasty in winter.
Tempe Marketplace is definitely the nicest outdoor mall in the phoenix area. I attended a few concerts here but the audio is pretty bad overall. I Went to superstition springs mall today and a bunch of stores are now closed including the large RC hobby shop a few food court shops that were open just a few months ago.
I vividly remember walking to this place from the hotel we were staying at during a student exchange, and people yelled at us from their cars, and also somehow one person threw coins at us. Walking seemed to be a foreign concept to Americans, at least the ones living in Phoenix

that was a satisfying dunk of the camera
True G’s remember the Best Buy had a legit musical instruments store inside
The Blu Rays, DVDs and CDs
Wow I haven't thought about that for decades, but I do vaguely remember that back in the mid-late 1990s!
car stereos used to take up a lot of space. now its 2 shelves

Oh yeah, I miss the Musical Instruments section in BEST BUY.

I was just going to comment that this seems like an awesome place to do the sip & stroll and take in the holiday decorations.
The last 6 seconds of this video goes unexpectedly hard.
Made me burst out laughing.
"X is stupid and Elon can suck it"... Well, you're not wrong.
I like that it's the old twitter logo from like 2012 as well 😄
@seatspud actually you are all wrong it is X . And Elon rocks because he is anti woke . Maybe that triggers you guys eh ?
The greenery, palm trees and water fountains make it a really pretty place to shop and hang out. It’s nice to see a mall that still cares
I think there are still a lot of properties that still care, but they don’t have the money to do anything properly.
Safety or infrastructure is always the first to get you shut down, most have to focus on that, and if the profits are low, no mo-mo-money for anything else.
I love the sound of water fountains it’s really cool to hear the water fountain

The vibes in this video are so strong. I needed this one today!

I didn't know that Hot Topic owns Boxlunch, but that would make sense.
Powerman 5000 and Buckcherry? Awesome! Wish our mall had a space for concerts.

That place is so busy during the week. Even Friday and Saturday nights it's still pretty busy.

Been there several times but i had no idea there was a mall. Mind blown.
That is such a pretty mall. Looks like it is maintained too compared to others. Have a great day !!

I had to look to see if there were 99 cent only stores in Tempe. Apparently they are closing all their stores. Their produce usually had fruit flies.
