Record-breaking wildfires in Alaska burn more than 3 million acres | DW News

  • As floods hit some parts of the US, wildfires are devastating other parts of the country, including the largely uninhabited state of Alaska. The White House says the total area destroyed is far higher than the ten-year average, in large part driven by the climate crisis. President Biden has approved a major disaster declaration for Alaska, which is experiencing an unusually fierce wave of forest fires. DW's Carolina Chimoy met some of the people battling the fires, as well as the residents fleeing from them.

I live in Alaska, the major catalyst was Spurs Beetle killed 75 % of Spurs trees about 3 years ago and you have millions and millions of standing dead trees waiting to go up in flames coupled with drier conditions in certain areas of thr state makes for a recipe for huge forest fires.

Breaks my heart! Alaska is one of a dwindling number of places on the planet where you can see major wildlife on a daily basis and awe inspiring natural landscapes as well. I traveled around the state backpacking in the 70's, canoed the length of the Yukon river in the 80's and kayaked the inside passage from Seattle to Skagway twice in recent years. I guess I'm just glad I got to see some of it before it's gone - either melted or up in smoke.

another interesting tool are firefighting tanks. the german company RAC builds one based on the leopard 1 tank, the "Fire Commander".

Here is a idea that all home owners can use to protect their homes and farms. A do it yourself fire fighting tool you may have in your kitchen. Cornstarch, yes Boiled cornstarch, works like a fire retardant and if made properly will stay wet for almost 2 hours. Just make a thin and sprayable paste and cover what you don't want to burn. Going camping take some cornstarch boiling it to put out your campfire far safer than using just straight water. Doing welding around the shop or in the field use it to cover anything you don't want to burn.
Now let's put this into a workable plan to stop forest fires or reduce their damage and protect small towns or cities from fire. Placing a 500,000 gallon or 5 million gallon water tank on hilltops near your city for fire protection. Now cover those tanks with solar panels and around the tanks place in wind turbines and if there is a moving stream of water near by put in Waterotors or slow speed turbines to make power. Adding irrigation pipes down the hill sides and then adding boiled cornstarch or Tetra KO to the sprinkler lines you create a fire line it can last up to 24 hours with the commercial product. A small city or town can make power to sell or use for City lighting. To make the water needed to fill the tanks you install atmospheric water generators, you can now make drinking water, irrigation water, set up a when needed fire line, and sell power. The State and the Reservations need to be setting these up wherever needed.

This isn't a climate issue. It is a problem of forest management. Over the last decade, there have been several insect infestations that wrecked havoc with national forest lands. Millions of dead but standing trees have been aging and drying making them the absolute best firewood. The recent storms generated the lightning strikes which led to the fire. Up until 11 years ago, deadwood was purposely removed to reduce fire risk. Since then it is not allowed. Forest spaces need to be managed. If not you get this outcome
There are too many times that facts get in the way of the narrative. This is one of those instances.
