I would suggest using the Cloyes 9-3127 it is a double roller set that is center distance corrected with ZERO chain slack. I just installed this on my 2.5 TJ. You can also advance the timing 4 degrees for more low end torque. Premium components!
Man, to have a shop like that. I'll be redoing all the lower seals, water pump, and intake/exhaust manifold gasket on my Cherokee here in a few weeks. Not as much fun if you can't pull the engine! Great stuff here.
Good vid. Getting ready to put a timing chain and gears in my 1988 XJ Cherokee. Like the idea of putting the pulley in place before tightening the cover.
I'm so nervous to do this job on my 2000 XJ (first time doing a cylinder head replacement and timing chain!). But you're so calm and relaxed and making it look easier than I thought, haha. Thank you for the wonderful video, I'm sure I'll be referring back to it a million times during my swap!
Thanks so much for the videos. I'm building a 00' WJ and it's being cantankerous if it wasn't for these videos, the Haynes manual and my neighbor I'd be lost
small fail you did not check the 15 links as stated in the service manual. i would to have also shown the time mark to key on the dampener. the dampener can move if it is bad and make the time mark off.
When aligning the gears to put on new chain n sprocket does it matter if the tdc is on the compression stroke or is tdc tdc. And how do you know if which stroke your on when the heads are off and when the heads are on.
OK....hold up a minute here!!!! You should know as a Jeep owner, that when you say... and I quote... "It's such a nice day out here... 1:08" You , as a responsible Jeep owner, should be taking that opportunity to go riding around neked, top down doors off... It's almost an obligation....lol... Alrighty... that said.........carry on....
I lost my tensioner spring behind my thrust pin on the cam sprocket, I can't find any mention of them anywhere let alone order a new one, any suggestions?
I bought a crate motor that would not rev past 3500. Pulled the timing cover off and my timing marks were lined up but the cam was opposite side of crank. Would that cause the problem or just make it that the distributor would need to be installed 180 out?
Hey Dale I hope you and all your loved ones are ok I have a question about the cam bearings I noticed that the 3rd cam bearing in has 2 oil holes I got my son's block back from the machine shop and the 3rd one in has 2 holes in it, but only one hole is lined up with the a oil galley hole. Have you had any cam issues with your rebuild Take care

My YJ has a coolant leak that drops down from the front end of the transmission. I can’t see where it’s coming from to get to the transmission. Does anyone know where it could be coming from?
Hey there! I see you said to torque to 80 ft lbs. I torqued it down and the head of the bolt sheered off. Went online to do some more research and it says the spec is 50 ft lbs. anybody had this problem?
Man, that sucks. Sorry bout that. I double checked both my manuals, Chilton and Haynes. They both say 80. Where did you find 50? But 50 or 80 shouldn’t have sheered it off. My guess would be your bolt was close to failure for some reason.
I’m finding that different years have different torques. I’m rebuilding my 2001 sport and the torque is 50. The sprocket on the cam is different also (has a key like the crank sprocket).
hey dale! build is coming along nicely.. slow but nicely, i have an 05TJ with the 4.0 and its been running pretty bad for a while goes into limp mode after its warmed up and occasionally misses (runs fine right to redline before it reaches temp though) the engine light says the crank position and cam position sensor dont match up ive replaced the crank sensor and pulled the oil pump drive to check for any issues with the cam sensor and reinstalled properly to no avail.. any ideas jeep only had 140,000 Kilometers on it thats less than 100k miles seems a shame to throw a new timing set at it already
@@Rubenrz_ its still not sorted, clutch went out so possibly clutch debris on crank sensor, maybe i also had it out 180 degrees on timing but it ran great at times so i doubt that.. it works good enough at times i still offroad it as is but it needs to be sorted
th-cam.com/video/bfqZ_lwk2j0/w-d-xo.html Don't use gasket maker with gasket. Use one or the other not both. RTV can lubricate gasket and cause it to "squidge" out. Have seen many shade tree repairs fail for this reason.
Yeah scooter...my thoughts exactly. A gasket is the seal between the components. In the absence of a gasket, RTV or gasket maker can be used. Now, I have seen a thin, and I mean thin, coat of Indian Head used with a gasket but that was more for holding the gasket in place while assembling. Also overlooked was pre oiling the timing chain. That is always a good thing to do.
Really look forward to your videos.. Just wondering what color are you going to paint your engine.. My pick, Zombie Green..Lol just saying before ya paint it. Black is... Just... BLACK. Oh yea Great job !
I was thinking gray. Nothing fancy, just clean. Well.. tried. Didn't turn out how I wanted. Probably talk about it next week. Thanks for following along!
. the only thing I can think of is it's not a new chain. He could have used one he had and just used it for the video. If you look at other videos the chain is always tight with little or no slack in it. The chain in this video had to much slack to use. The factory says the chain should be replaced after 60k miles. I thought I had a rod knocking until I turned the crank by had and I heard my timing chain slapping, since I installed a new chain I can't even hear a tick in the engine. 260k 2001 xj

Would like to add, cam sprocket bolt torque is 50 ft lbs for up to year 98. Year 99 and after is 80 ft lbs due to different bolt type.

Extremely helpful and was the best video I could find!
Great video and awesome info exactly what i needed to know about using the harmonic balancer to line up the timing cover thank you very much
You never mentioned anything about the new timing chain tensioner
The manual states that the camshaft gear bolt is set at 50 ft. lbs.?
Showed me just what I needed to know!!! Thanks

I had to use a punch to put the smaller sprocket on, it was super tight.

DO NOT TORQUE CAM BOLT TO 80!! the manual calls for 50 ft/lbs
You sir are correct! 6cyl calls for 50ft lbs. 4 cyl call for 80 ft lbs. I made a correction to the video. Thank you.
Where can i find the sprocket preload bolt with push pin?
Porque mi motor le suenan los taquetes.??
Monte taquetes nuevo, bocinas de la leva, bomba de aceite y aun quedaron sonando.
With my motor in the Jeep and all together, how do I turn my cam shaft and sprocket to line up with cam shaft with it being top dead center.
Es el mismo motor de la XJ? Xq el manual marca el torque del sprocket del camshaft en 50lb ft
My smaller sprocket does not have timing marks... what do i do?
Never-ending, I asked before I started watching. Looks like I'll need to replace them. I didn't know replacing the sprockets was that easy, thanks!

You do NOT need that much RTV. I bet you will find some of that in the oil pan, pick up screen and oil filter later.
It looks like a lot on camera, but it’s actually a very thin layer.

Is the new one supposed to have that much play?!
No it shouldn't. They say if the timing chain has about a half inch of slack it needs to be replaced. Once I installed my new chain it had no slack
