Recommended Tools for the Salvage Yard

  • **Sponsored Video**I've put together this list of recommended tools to bring when you go to the salvage yard. A lot of it is just basic hand tools, but I do have some other recommendations like water and sunscreen. I highly recommend both of those so you don't end up dehydrated and slightly crispy like I did.
    If you're not familiar with Pull-A-Part, they're a self service salvage company in the US. They have 25 yards in 12 states. I'm not just saying this, but they've become my favorite place to go for salvage parts. I suggest you check them out.

      Great tip. However, the trip to junkyard may end badly if the subject vehicle is a GM product. GM policies were pretty retarded before the bankruptcy--they liked to change bolts, parts, etc MID-YEAR! Best example would be the 1995 Blazer, Jimmy, Sonoma, S10 etc

    Id recommend one change that I do, Go to a Army surplus store and pick up either the small or medium sized army backpack for use as a junkyard toolbox. Ton's of pockets and loops to hook things on and is a huge difference being able to sling it over your shoulder or put the straps on instead of hand carrying the soon to be feeling very heavy metal toolbox.

    last weekend I went to my local pullapart with a frien. Went in and looked for the parts, went back outside to make sure they were the same color, then back inside to buy it. We went ahead and replaced it in the parkinglot but in the process (as you said in this video) we broke a piece of the interior trim... so we had o go back in for a third time!

    I always do what your final tip is...Take off the part that you are going to replace so 1) I know what I'm looking for; 2) I know how to remove it, 3) I know what tools I will need.
    I have also learned that I should always take a breaker bar & penetrating oil (trying to get rusty lug nuts off with just a 3/8 ratchet isn't as easy or fun as some might think).

    The last tip of taking the same tools you used to remove your part(s) before heading out to the yard. I would also take aditional different sized wrenches/sockets in case the part you need in the yard is attached with replacement fasteners instead of OEM fasteners the car came with.

    Personal favorite tool not listed..."Dogbone" wrench. Made in metric or SAE it has the 8 most common sizes all in one wrench! I almost always use it a the backup wrench when you find the nut and bolt are both 15mm (thanks GM!). How many 15mm's are in your 101 piece tool kit.
    Also...wobble extensions...lot of wobble extensions.

  • @Mandurath

    Great list. Only thing I can think of missing is a flashlight/headlamp.
    Most times rather than a tool box, used an old army surplus duffle bag. Allowed plenty of storage, was easier to wear/carry. Esp hiking around the lot. Inevitably the part you need is way out there.

    One thing Id add to the list of reccomended stuff to bring, a cart of some sort for those parts that are either really heavy or at the bare minimum to minimise how much stuff you will have to carry. Most yards wont let you bring your personal vehicle in to the actual yard, and in my experience they wont let you use a yard car either.

    My tip: Never take any tools into the junkyard that you would mind losing, because you will lose them. Your junkyard kit should consist of Harbor Freight, pawn shop, found in vehicles you bought (my favorite kind of tools, personally), and motorcycle tool pouch tools. If you need something special for the job never let it out of your sight.
    And you should always be carrying your Leatherman... That should go without saying, really.

      This sounds goofy, but I've had great success with using a backback for tools, parts, etc. It is very useful as it leaves your hands free if you get something large.

      Nope. Instead we're going to hang out in the salvage yard for a while. They'll be several videos posted over the next few days. After that, it's as much Fairmont as you can stand.

      Rather disappointed to get a short sponsored vid on a Friday, what on earth made you go with this for the main video of the week? Disappointed indeed.

      It was such a great tear-down video last week, I was hoping for the next instalment too.
      If you haven't read the newsletter that was really good this month, and at least we have a promise for next week :)

    I always have ear plugs. Many times I am hammering on a part and its LOUD!

    So i used to go to the atlanta Pull A Parts a lot and they absolutely don't allow power tools. the few times i needed them i was told kindly to put my cordless tools back in my vehicle.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true. In fact they made a point of me saying that those tools were allowed. They just don't allow torches or stuff that makes fire.

    • @toxic07nj
      @toxic07nj 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They must have changed their policy. I used to go to Atlanta South and North a lot to get parts for Various BMW's i've owned and there was always a little sign that said Power tools and Jacks were not allowed in the yard and they always told me to put my impact driver back in my vehicle. Nice to know they finally realized that rule was kinda silly. If someone gets stuck and can't get the part they need off a car because they don't allow a tool that's just money out of their pocket.

    pick & pull doesn't allow torches or saws-all. and depending on the attendant may or may not allow the impact.

    Some salvage yards like Buddy's-U-Pull don't allow blow torches or saw-zaws.

      @nathanielyoung2689 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also you forgot breaker bars and a cheater pipe. I goto buddy's in Springfield/Republic Missouri all the time. They give you free water and you don't have to pay to get in.

    Once a vehicle is all stripped down of parts at the salvage yard, do they recycle the remaining metal to make new cars?

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They recycle everything that's left. Some of it might end up as new cars.

    Wonder which home depot you went to. Also how good are the wrenches with the ratcheting in the open end?

    • @ratbert86
      @ratbert86 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The open end "ratcheting" ones are worthless IMO. They are only good once you already have the fastener loose - you cannot apply any real torque to them. I have a Craftsman set I bought a few years back, quickly realized their shortcoming and only use them for the box end *if* a real wrench isn't nearby.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't remember the exact one. Somewhere near Lithonia. The wrenches worked OK. Nothing special.

    • @pgtmr2713
      @pgtmr2713 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got a set of Husky ratcheting wrenches, I've had for over 2 years now. I have them mixed in with a set of non ratcheting wrenches for the carry case. Great tools so far. But I have a 1/2 in breaker bar and a 3/8 ratchet, extensions, u-joint, and adapters of all sizes to handle the heavy stuff or breaking things loose. That will make the wrenches last longer.

      You'll have months of Fairmont videos in the very near future. I'm sure by then you'll be like, "Eric, what happened to the repair videos?" No matter what I do, someone is going to have issue with it. I should just accept it. ;)

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't all need to be 30min videos. They just need to contain useful repair information. This information can save you a ton of money on your repairs.

    Check with the yard you are going to (online likely will list the 'rules') about cutting tools. Many yards will not allow cordless saws and cutting tools.

      Wish our local yard did. We are restoring a 1995 Explorer with rotted out rocker panels. Local yard has a MINT 1998 Explorer (interchangeable body panels). I asked the idiot behind the counter how much to get the parts. He quoted me $75 per panel, and $75 per CUT! So these panels and dog legs would have likely run over $300 plus tax. I can buy them new with factory thickness for $160.00. Sometimes ya gotta research before you go! Sure it's a great cost savings option in most cases--but other times you'll get hosed.

    • @njintau
      @njintau 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one by my house just said power tools. I'm assuming its battery powered since there's no place to plug a power tool in unless you bring your own power supply and inverter.
