  • Scott from FrightProps gives a quick overview of the various methods used to control the speed of a pneumatic cylinder.
    In this video, we demonstrate the use of Flow Control Fittings as well as Speed Control Mufflers to slow down the speed of a cylinder.
    We also demonstrate the use of Quick Exhaust Valves, which can greatly increase the speed of a cylinder.

    Technical detail alert: Whether you use port flow controls or mufflers in both cases you are restricting exhaust, not the flow into the cylinder as the video indicates. You can see this happening since tightening the control at the nose of the cylinder is slowing down the extension, meaning slowing the exhaust leaving the front of the cylinder as the rod extends. This is the way you want to do it since it keeps pressure in the cylinder giving the cylinder more control. If you were actually restricting the flow of air into the cylinder, the cylinder loses control in its stroke. It needs the exhaust air to push against to maintain position.

    • @jvmiller1995
      @jvmiller1995 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know the exhaust flows out as well. You are controlling the flow of the exhaust and that sets the speed by restricting it but it is still a flow control. Is it not? Don't answer that was rhetorical

    It's much easier, more reliable, and cheaper to place a speed control muffler on both exhaust ports of the valve body. It's better to meter the airflow out of the cylinder than into the cylinder.

    If your using online flow control valves, BE SURE to check the flow direction in the valves, if you have them installed backwards, the cylinder will act eratically. I use inline flow control valves with rapid exhaust, reversing the valves caused static speed operation, slow retraction even when wife open.

    Thanks a ton for this awesome video. Would be grateful if somebody can help with a doubt. How do you control speed where force exerted varies. Ex: we have a section on a pivot lifting a flat surface from horizontal to vertical. Like a vertical top door on a kitchen shelf. When horizontal, load is more. When vertical almost zero.

    Much better control i.e. Accomplished by using flow control valves that control the air exhausting out of the cylinder.
    They can be set at different flow rates for extend speed and retract speed. This gives great cylinder rod speed control in cylinders with larger bore , longer stroke cylinders with oversize piston rods.
    I believe it is better to control air exhausting the cylinder, should an airline fail, the cylinder will still the controlled flow exhausting.

    • @payasofeo69

      your pressure is too low or you don't have enough flow. if your cylinder is the right size for what you're pushing with enough pressure and flow it will not jump.

    Could you use the flow-control muffler on only the rear port to get a single action? If the piston is able to simply be pushed back? If not with a flow-control muffler, is there another way to achieve this? - Assuming a single action piston of the required dimensions are not available.

    Very impressive video . Congratulations. I’m new on the world of the pneumatic “toys”. I have some questions.
    What is your source of compressed air .
    How You adjust Newtons and stroke ( when is possible )
    When system is “dead” , can you move still objects with hands ?
    What I need to complete system like this to close and open automatically a ......drawer ?
    Thank you very much.

    • @garyklopper6976
      @garyklopper6976 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tecno,
      Compressed air would normally come from your compressor or a compressed air tank.
      You would normally use a regulator to adjust the pressure to the cylinder/actuator. If the system has no air in it you will be able to move the application manually as there is no air to restrict movement or keep your cylinder in one position.
      To open and close a drawer you will need a 5/2 valve Single Solenoid as in video an electrical switch to put power to the coil for activation and deactivation. piping and fittings. the size of the cylinder will be determined by the force required to open and close the drawer. You will probably need flow controls to adjust speed as shown in vid.
      If you don't want to use a solenoid type valve, you can use a pilot operated valve 5/2 pilot spring return and a 3/2 normally closed push button valve.
      This will do the same job.

    I need to know how to get an actuator close at one speed a slow down so the door it is operating doesn't slam. My door is part of a ride and having the door block the track is not a speed issue. But when the vehicle is approaching the door I need it open fast enough so the vehicle won't hit the door. If the door opens fast enough but so fast that it bounces and hits the vehicle as it passes. I need the last few inch or two of the actuator slow down. How would you do that.

    The method you showed to control the speed using control valves... Does it compromise the pressure entering the cylinder?

    • @garyklopper6976
      @garyklopper6976 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No it doesn't compromise the pressure. There is a difference between pressure and flow although they work hand in hand together.
      Lets say you need to move 3 pounds. your pressure is responsible for the work force to move that 3 pounds. Flow would determine the speed at which you move that 3 pounds. So you can have 30PSI @ 0.2 Cv or 30 PSI @ 0.4Cv
      Hope that helps

    How does this affect the operating pressure?(displacement force) I currently use a setup to move a box of 13 kg, however, it happens too fast. Thus, I want to use the speed control muffler to restrict the exhaust so that the box is slowly moved. Will it work, and will the pressure or displacement force remain the same?

    • @jakubp4755
      @jakubp4755 ปีที่แล้ว

      The force should remain the same. Using a speed control muffler will only make the exhausting air take more time to exit the cylinder, but in the end the pressure there will be atmospheric.

    I have a ball valve with a rack & pinion actuator single acting fail close. Do I need to look for a solenoid valve that will restrict in-out flow to make sure it will open-close slowly? My boss is asking me to help him with this on a vapor line that a quick response on the equipment is making trouble with the operation of the equipment. I will like to know your recommendation

    • @garyklopper6976
      @garyklopper6976 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Daniel. You can use the flow controls that you saw in the video. If you are using a single acting actuator, normally only takes one application supply ( one pipe to actuator). you can also use an in-line flow control valve or even the restricted silencer type that fits into the exhaust port on the valve. make sure you are using the exhaust side to control your speed or the actuator when turning will get a shudder.

    Lucked upon this. Wanted to simulate the recoil of a dummy Mk19 40mm grenade launcher using pneumatics to move a chunk of oak inside that simulates the bolt mass moving inside a 1/8" thick aluminum housing, using a trigger activated controller programmed to extend/collapse the shaft at the same cyclic rate as the real weapon system 360-390 RPM, the shaft extending 5 inches each cycle, and possibly venting the air out the aluminum barrel. The original Mk19 has two captive action springs about 1" OD each so there is plenty of space to hide the cylinder.
