I feel you’ve missed something with Siuan and Bryne. To me it didn’t seem forced and had a pretty slow build up. The courtship was very combative but also quite natural. Maybe it’s because I reread the series each time a new book came out after Winters heart so I had a chance to see it evolve more. I do agree, Siuan’s character falls quickly during the whole Salidar story line and I liked her less as the books went on, but IMO the relationship building felt very organic to me.

It’s better than most in the series but that’s not saying much. It starts off borderline adversarial then constant bickering and then they get together… like almost every romance in this series. Robert Jordan is great at alot of things but almost every romance is poor.

The issue with Mat's character is that Sanderson isn't quite subtle enough with him. He's a little goofier, for example, and I think that Sanderson had trouble balancing the way that what Mat thinks, says, and does are usually 3 different things. I think the best example is the whole "boots" monologue. Mat wouldn't have gone on at length in quite that way, even though it does seem in line w/ his character. Jordan would have expressed the same kind of character moment with a combination of thoughts, words, and actions. Sanderson just had him say it. I didn't think it was all that bad, but some people throw fits over it.

The planning for the assault on the town before Verin shows up was what really stuck out to me. The elaborate back stories and subterfuge didn't feel like Matt at all but did feel very Sanderson. It just doesn't seem like Matt to write pages of story for each person and seemed goofy.

All Aes sedai to this point are terrible people. They are so frustrating to read. The secrets the pettiness and the fact that they all think they are better than everyone (including each other). All most every conflict or incident is due to them and the secrets that they keep. I am literally hoping that the whole white tower slowly burns to the ground with them all trapped in it. They destroy everything and everyone that they come in contact with because they feel that they are better than everyone.

Gawyn meets Rand, meets Egwene who grew up with Rand. Hears Rand is the Dragon. His mom ruins Camelyn and disappears and Rand conquers the city. He hears rumors that Rand killed his mom and he suddenly refuses to believe anything other than that fact. Forget that he met Rand as a normal kid, or that Egwene who had been with Rand every step of the way before this said he didn't do it, and this is the girl he loves, forget all the evidence that his mom was controlled by a Forsaken and Rand killed the Forsaken, forget that everyone in the world knows that Rand wants Elayne on the throne. It literally makes zero sense for him to believe this AND throw away every ounce of noble character he has as he helps Aes Sedai capture Rand and torture him for weeks. That, on top of choosing sides in a battle of the white tower that he had really no business even partaking in. He had no idea what rules/laws of the tower were being broken or upheld by either of the factions, but he chose one side because he didn't like that Siuan sent Elayne and Egwene out of the tower and it was his "duty" to protect Elayne. He becomes the entitled douche noble that Matt stereotypes nobles as at the beginning of the series. There is pretty much zero redeeming qualities to him other than he "loves" Egwene.

All of this! I've hated that prick since The Shadow Rising. I actually started to like him a little bit more in TGS because it seemed like he was finally getting his head out of his arse. Also, I dunno why Mike thought it was BS for Egwene to put him in his place before she would accept him. She was putting her feelings for hims behind her responsibility to the Tower and her station. Anyway thanks for your comment cause you pretty much hit the nail on the head point for point.

I just finished TGS and I loved it! More than KoD I think everything going on with Rand, Egwayne and Verrin had me hooked on this one. I also couldn't tell a big difference between the two authors writing styles, I think Sanderson did a phenomenal job with this first book and I'm excited to see how he wraps up Jordan's Wheel of Time epic.
Side note I don't really care about Gawyn or Galad, neither one of them have done much of anything in this series so far compared to other side characters, I mean Morraine has been dead for the last 7 books up to this point and even she has had more influence in the story than these two. I will say Gawyn's insistence on Rand's involvement with his mothers "murder" is eye rolling at this point i kind of want him to try and start something with Rand just to see the Dragon Reborn put this dude in his place lol other than that I loved this one definitely top 5 Wheel of Time books for me.

WRT not being able to tell that the book was partially written by another author, not only to I agree, but Brandon Sanderson later said that the scene that “stuck out” as feeling the least like RJ to me was written by RJ. So... at least the way I read it, Brandon Sanderson can feel more like Robert Jordan than Robert Jordan himself. I can’t think of anyone who could’ve possibly done a better job at it, and it’s how I discovered his work.

Well couple of things I would like to say. I didn't notice the change of writing from Jordan to Sanderson the first time either. But on my reread I did realise that Jordan's writing is more vivid and descriptive but Sanderson's is more fast paced and direct. I guess its something that's difficult to notice immediately.
The other thing. The book is basically a Rand /Egwene two hander. Which means the bulk of Perrin/Mat story is in the next book. This is intentional of Sanderson's.
Also I have to warn you that the events of Perrin and Mat in the next book takes place concurrently with the events of The gathering storm. This may cause some confusion in the time lines but everything aligns by the end.
Happy reading. Also I guess Egwene gonna be roasted. I still love her.

Sanderson wrote Mat as if he didn’t read the last Tuon chapter in Knife of Dreams is the best way I can describe it. He wrote him as a clown who stumbles into right decisions. It was jarring. I had to put down the book when Talmanes called Mat an “idiot”. He would NEVER do that, his men worship him - deservedly so. Tuon also mentioned that soldiers were not indulging in alcohol when she first entered the camp, yet Mat is worried about sending brandy to his men? Mat’s chapters upset me. Perrin was not quite himself as well. Everything else was great.

As for Gawyn--you can call me a hater here, though I'll admit there are plenty of good things about the way his character is written--the thing that annoys me is his consistent refusal even to consider that Rand may in fact not have killed Morgase, that that one rumor of the hundreds circulating through the world must be true, despite testimony of people (a) whose opinions he has reason to respect, and (b) know Rand better than Gawyn does, that it is almost certainly just a rumor.

As for Gawyn, people hate him because they are forgetting that characters in books do not have the same information that you do, as the reader. Yes, Gawyn does dumb stuff, but if the information that he bases his decisions on was accurate, then none of it would be dumb.
For example, his animosity towards Siuan, pre-Tower split, is completely justified if you look at the limited information he had and assume it is true. Gawyn was raised as a one-man Secret Service for his sister--it was his only purpose in life. Imagine if the Secret Service didn't know where the president was, and someone gave them a bunch of shady, misleading non-answers on his whereabouts. How do you think they would react? That's the situation Gawyn was in, there.
Of course, Siuan had very good reasons not to give Gawyn information. She really couldn't. That's what makes that subplot compelling: no one was the bad guy, but things still went to hell. I think people feel like someone *has* to be the bad guy in such a tragic situation, so they just hate Gawyn because he chose the wrong side.

there are only 3 forsaken that are worth anything as big baddies, Moridin, Lanfear, and Demandred, the rest are not up to snuff.
The way I see it, most this people were actually the first rats that abandoned ship during the age of legends, were every channeler was waaaaaay better than whatever we had at the beginning of the series, whose legends were oversold with each telling, and that only care for their own skins; you know weasels that try to fail upwards. Except for the three I mentioned previously.

11:00 as the books progress you will be able to tell the difference between Sanderson and Jordan. There are a couple of things that are pure Sanderson. Since you are far more familiar with him than I you will be able to tell
22:00 Yes it is the whole attitude of I can insult them, torture them but you can't. Remember Nynieve does care about her charges despite how she may act and they towards her. Mat is that buddy that would bust your chops if you asked for help but after a lot of cussing and fussing you know he would have your back Nyneve may cus and fuss and even clout your head but if something happened to you or someone threatened you she'd be the one taking care of you or hunting down the thing that hurt you.
28:00 you will know soon enough why Gawain is hated. When you are done with the series how would you feel about a top 10 most hated WOT characters? I'm curious to see what your list would be. but trust me the hate Gawain earns is legitimate.
31:00 it was Wasted lands in which the game of riddles takes place.
33:00 I can't wait to hear what you have to say about Egewene and Rand lol. It should be sooo good. I've been holding my tongue and trying my best not to ruin anything for you.
Reunification I had a theory about the broken tower. My theory was that when it referred to the tower breaking and being reunified whole and stronger than before wasn't a reference to the white tower split but rather the original breaking between male and female channelers and that the tower being remade whole refers to the black and white being unified. What are your thoughts Mike or anyone else?

My only real complaint with Sanderson's take over was that I felt RJ completed Perrin's emo arch at the end of KoD but Sanderson keeps it for a little bit longer than neccessary. My best guess he was spinning his wheels for a bit trying to get Perrin's voice down before moving to the next stage of his arch.

Predictions: don't worry about it. Who killed Asmodean (if anyone), who is Taim (if anyone), who is Demondred (if anyone). These were probably the three biggest questions among the fandom at the time this was published (plus a few more Forsaken questions that you might not even notice if you don't have a list of all of them and where they are each book). Jordan insisted there were enough clues to figure it out. But... there were of course theories, but none that really had enough support to be 'settled'. I'm sure people will yell at you for not figuring everything out anyway, but nobody knew for sure at the time.
Matt: yeah, a lot of people had issues with Matt in this book. I didn't personally either.
Tower of Genji: Suffered from the decision to split the book - apparently Sanderson had finished most of 12 and 13 before that decision was made. So we get a certain amount of stories pushed to the next book that you might expect or hope to find here. Largely by character, which includes Matt. Perrin also suffers from this somewhat. His time to shine is coming.
Avienda: it's totally going somewhere. One of the best scenes in the series coming up with her.
Pronunciation: it's never going to be perfect just reading, but you've actually done remarkably well over the series. Way better than I did before the audiobooks.

Jordan had a good bit of this book written before he died, so I doubt Sanderson wrote the Prologue. As far as Rand looking young, he is young, but he also gets the same youthful effect of channeling that women get.

Late to this review. The whole Hinderstep section of this book felt like something right out of Buffy/Angel/Supernatural. So much so, I felt I'd heard the story before. Love Matt, and didn't think he was written any differently, but I felt like this entire section of the book was filler. The whole Hinderstep story could of been cut, and it would have no affect on the story (Guessing, I'm at the same spot in the series, and don't know if it matters later or not).

Don't feel bad about the Min viewings, I never understood any of them, even after my second read through, unless Jordan was like "Hey this is what this viewing means, idiot". It was pretty cool finding out what each of them meant later on, as some are obscure and some in hindsight, were obvious. I also felt the same that, if I hadn't know it was 2 authors writing this series, I would not have known. Great part 1, can't wait to see your thoughts in the next video. I'm entering the Bubble of Evil here but I FINALLY have time to watch these reviews! I'm sure I will disagree on a point or two but that's the joy in fandom, for me. Seeing the story from other people's perspective helps me understand more layers, and I hope that goes both ways with the other fans I talk to. No hate necessary in fandom and I wish it would stop! I am not going to read the comment section, so I apologize if I repeat things others already said.
Fans coming at you because you missed things is so laughable. NO ONE can say they read this series and caught every single reference and clue the first time through. NO ONE. That's why this series is so enjoyable to re-read! You catch things you missed before, every time! You're allowed to miss things during your first time, sheesh! folks need to calm down!
People's issue with Mat is they see him as written as more shallow comic relief. But my unpopular opinion is that Sanderson did a far better job making Mat more relatable. He wasn't my favorite character before this. He never is my favorite, but I enjoy his story far more in the last three books.
Hinderstap...you'll get the "why" of them in the future but those are fun *spoilers* so, in the eternal words of Robert Jordan, "Read and Find Out!"
omg THANK YOU. Thank you for seeing that Faile isn't a terrible person. That what people most likely hate is what Perrin becomes, not her specifically. I think the funeral thing she and the other women did was indicative of the mental health struggles people start to experience. They all had stockholm syndrome with their chosen protectors. It's better that they create a moment of closure than carry that forward with them. IMO.
Gawyn...oh Gawyn...give it time. The loathing is a slow burn. I won't spoil it for you because he will show you himself (I also pronounce it Gah-win)
I'm currently putting all my bookmarks into a spreadsheet and one of the things I've been tracking are Min's viewings, Egwene's Dreams, and the few glimpses Perrin gets in TAR. I'll be happy to share that document into your discord when I'm done!
    ok, on to part 2!

I think the reason you can't tell a big difference between Sanderson and Jordan I think is that Sanderson was a huge fan of the WoT before he took this on. And I believe Brandon said himself that Jordan had something like 50 to 60% of the end done. (Cant remember exactly what he said). And I think he really looked up to jordan as well. Probably modeled his style a bit like Jordan.

  • @arksine

The reason I hate Gawyn so far:
    1. He's a prince, trained in a royal palace, but places weight to rumors over Egwene's claim that Rand did not kill his mother.
    2. Recently he's more of a one note character that goes - disagree with me? Pull out your sword, cus it's on! - any semblance of conflict exists and this guy rushes in to escalate it to 11.
    3. He pushes his wishes over Egwene's about her wanting to be and being an autonomous Aes Sedai and Amrylin. I get the disbelief, but not accepting it even after she explicitly states this is how things are?
Over all, he's immature and thinks he is a main character. Which is shockingly different from the Gawyn I knew and loved as he was introduced - he followed Elayne, felt inferior to Galad at every turn, and treated Rand like an actual human being.

  • @Danne1886
    @Danne1886 ปีที่แล้ว

I think Masema was probably meant to meet up with Darth Rand. To be the guy who is kissing his ass when everyone else is horrified by what he has become.
And the only Mat part that seemed weird to me was when he made up a bunch of detailed back stories for everyone's disguise. I feel like everything else felt natural. He was grumpy at first but Telmanes even says it's not like him and obviously something is bothering him. I don't think you can blame Sanderson for him acting out of character for an in universe reason that his friends explicitly call out.
And I noticed more fan servicey moments like Mat telling Tom that he still needs him, or Rand and Nynaeve sticking up for Mat so fiercely. Idk if Jordan would have written those lines quite like that, but none of it bothers me.
