growing up in minnesota i never really understood why people would say that. now having been on the massive lower Mississippi it makes sense. i couldnt believe how big the river got after the ohio confluence

yup i started in the pelican and switched to the red one which is longer and has more storage. the first 16 miles are very shallow so the pelican is perfect for it
@@PADDLECAMPFISH yeah for sure, you will see after the minneapolis video, #8 i think, i switch boats again to my really nice solstice gts which is kevlar
willing, yes! able? No! lol i would go again if i could but my current schedule no longer allows it. one thing i had to settle with was if i truly wanted to go i had to be willing to go solo. there are few people willing to make a journey of this scale. have you considered shorter sections or smaller rivers to start? cheers🍻
@escapewithjay I live near the Tennessee River. I have a friend that wants to do some short overnighters. I might do some of those this year and attemp the Tennessee from Knoxville to Paducah KY. Loved 😍 your videos Jim
@@Jim-ho9sy ive eyed the tennessee river several times as i came through Chattanooga. it looks like a great river. there is a video series of a guy that did it but sorry, i dont remember the name of his channel
16 1/2 miles down from Lake Itasca there is a spot called coffee pot landing that has drive in access. That is where my wife met me at the end of the first day. That is where I switched boats and loaded all the gear that I brought with me.
The minnesota dnr has a pretty decent set of maps from lake itasca to hastings, mn. you just email them and ask them to send out the entire set. after that many people have different ways of navigating. i used my phone and gps, some folks just follow the river and some buy a set of army corps of engineers navigation maps. occasionally i come across small booklets that different marinas have which are ok but harder to find. once the river gains some size especially outside of minnesota its easier to follow the river and i used my maps less and less. i would mostly use them to find towns for resupply at that point. 1 really good app that worked until the company temporarily shut it down was "findship". great app shows river miles and boat names that are in your area. I used that for navigating as well. thanks for watching and i hope to hear if ya go!
Very cool videos!
It was really cool chit-chatting with you today at the lake.

Incredible to see how narrow the “Mighty Mississipp” is at this point

what a fantastic part on to part 3 next
Love re watching sometimes !
i appreciate that!
i am always happy to hear people come back for a a second round (or more!)
Lol I always have to stop my self from eating half a package of hotdogs before I cook them 😆 I love those forested areas!
it was crazy how hungry I was at the end of the day. a trend that would continue the rest of the trip!
@@escapewithjay that's the best part - you can eat as much as you want. haha
I'm surprised to see the Mississippi so meandering with oxbow bends - compared to the Twin Cities. haha
Yes the young river really takes its lazy time in the beginning!
Excellent!
Todd, I followed you up in Alaska
Hell yah
This gentleness starts the ruddy mighty Mississippi?
It sure does and its beautiful in the beginning
Do they make a one person paddle-driven kayak? hmmm Sure enough - my idea is already made. cool.
Pogledao sam i 2. dio! 👍👍👍

did you make your own music like Les Stroud? Oh I see the credits now
I wish I had that kind of talent! I just purchased the rights to the music I used
Did you start in the green Pelican and then buy the red kayak for this trip or did you already have the red one?
